Wondering if anyone can help me out. My daughter (3) has been gluten-free since July 06. She was tested around 11-12 mnths old- negative. Had 2 biopsies also. First one -negative, second one- positive. Blood tests in July 06 were high, Then retested in Oct 06- titers=80, TTG=86.4, retested again March 07, titers= 20, TTG = 67. The docter says she is still getting gluten. I'm not sure where to start to try and figure it out. We have all separate jars of foods for her, sep. toaster oven. I haven't been giving her things that could be cross contaminated, that we know of anyway. Also what ingredient am I looking for in hair products, bath stuff, lotions other than something clearly stating the obvious- wheat, oats, rye, barley....This is so frustrating.

Here's a few things that I am now questioning again-

Healthy Choice lunch meat- In the containers- Ultra thin honey ham

Deli American Cheese- Land of Lakes

Betty Crocker Fruit Snacks-tried calling -get different answers

Kelloggs fruit snacks- same with this one -different answers

Yoplait yogurts

Juicy Juice

Welch's Jelly

Hellmans Mayo

Ice cream- any brands as long as plain like choc, vanilla, coffee

Do I have to worry about the laundry detergent and fabric softeners that I use? Anything anyone can think of would be great.

I hate to say this but, start a massive list of EVERYTHING you use on your child (soap, cream, toothpaste, diaper cream, plus foods and drinks) and start calling. If you do not get a straight answer, use a different product. Clan Thompson used to sell foods lists that might be helpful. They come in paper back and electronic.

I know play dough contains wheat, so do finger paints, crayons, chaulks, even glues. Just find the gluten-free brands.

Some juices and drinks which sounds like they should be gluten-free are not. Some Rice milks, mixed juices (orange and banana, etc)

Most of the wipes, diaper creams and formulas are gluten-free, but you need to call on all of what you use.

Boar's Head and Thuramn Deli meats are what I use - gluten-free.

I think the ice cream and yogurt you use are highly questionable. I think they both can contain gluten, but I do not have my list with me. Some Bryers ice cream do contain Malt - Not gluten-free. The vanilla and chocholate checkerd pattern conatins malt. Yogurt - I use Stoneyfield farms. I think Yoplait is off limits for us.

Anyway, research this site for hidden sources of gluten and other key words to look for. Plus, everybook on celiacs has a list of the foods to avoid in it. See what you can find.

Hopefully you will find the hidden gluten soon.

Most yoplait yogurt is gluten-free (I think there is one with a granola), they are a Kraft company and will clearly state gluten. I use a natural Hormel deli meat that is prepackaged that says gluten-free on the label. However, I think the Healthy Choice lunch meats are safe but I am not positive.

Are you reading the labels everytime you buy something? It seems like a stupid question but I have almost been glutened from forgeting to double check every product every time. A company can change ingredients like we change our underwear!

I would also think about cc issues in your home. Plus I would look to outside sources of possible contamination (playgroup, church, preschool, day care, grandparents).

I hope you find some answers soon. It is very frustrating.

I have heard the above to be true about Dannon but not yoplait. If you do a search on this site there are alot of threads saying what I have said. Yoplait is made by Kraft, Kraft is a company that discloses gluten on the label. You do not need to call the company, you need to read the label. This is one of the companies that celiacs can trust.

Dear debral68,

I have a list that should really help. This is overwhelming. I went through this with myself six months ago. You spend most of your day cooking and cleaning obsessively. The rest you are on the phone with reps from companies trying to find out what is safe. I decided to save you the trouble!

1. There are a number of things in the regular grocery that are safe. Some things are labeled already. Wal-Mart's Great Value brand has numerous things you can eat.

2. For the love of God use Coupons on items you are allowed to eat. People can get them and print them out online even. Call some of the local stores and ask if they accept online coupons.

3. Check the ads online and in the newspaper. You would be surprised how many people do not do this.

4. Some items like rice flour and rice noodles are safe to buy at the Chinese or oriental market. The merchants are more than happy to help you if you cannot read the label.

Now, here is my list of great things to get you started:

Condiments:

Smart Balance Margerine

We eat Yoplait yogurt all the time with no issues. You do have to avoid the granola or cookie add-ins as mentioned above.

I beleive Hellmans mayo says gluten free on its label. Just double check.

Dear wolfie,

The Whips are really good! I may have to give up dairy though! :( It seems to make me sick. The Latte flavored Whips are delicious! Have you tried that flavor?

Dear debral68,

You are so welcome! I am going to try and make an even more organized list soon. I want to make sure for people who cannot have casein which items are not safe for them. I may be one of them. :( My doctor told me to give it up for a while to see. Having items listed by department will make shopping much easier. That will leave less time worrying about food, and more time having a life!

If you have a super Wal-mart near you, check out their grocery section. Their Great Value brand labels gluten free right on the label. Plus, it appears as though they don't label gluten free unless it's made in a gluten free facility. I could be wrong on that last part. They even label their juices and stuff. Plus, the Great Value brand is really tasty and much cheaper than the name brand stuff. I actually prefer many of the GV brand products over the name brand, I think they taste better.

Someone around here has a list of manufacturers that will clearly list gluten on the label as wheat, barley, rye, or oats. I know Kraft and Unilever will clearly list gluten, but there's a long list of safe manufacturers. Hopefully someone will post.

This lits is wonderful...thank you!

Here's the link to companies that have clear labeling policies. I use this over "lists" because food labels can change...but using this, even if labels change, you can still make an informed decision:

Dear UNCHeel,

You are welcome! ;) I was so glad to help you guys! Six months ago, I spent an eternity on the phone with manufacturers, then exhausted myself obsessively cleaning my stuff and cooking. By the time I was done with that, there was no energy left for anything else! It is really overwhelming.

Anything to make it easier! By the way, I just found out GV pie filling is gluten free! YAY! Comstock is expensive! I will let you know how it tastes!

Sincerely,

NoGluGirl

Did the GI doc give you any rational for stopping the Tylenol during the gluten challenge? I have never heard of this before and I can't imagine a good reason for it. Ibuprofen, maybe, because it is an anti inflammatory but acetaminophen?  I don't see that it would have any impact on the test results to take Tylenol.

Good day! New members here and I have a question about medication. My gastroenterologist made me stop some medication during the gluten challenge beforenthe screening test but I have a little surgery tomorrow and I need to know if I can use tylenol for half a day or if it will give me false results using it.   Thanks

I agree, there can be contamination at many points--milling is another possible source of contamination for any flours.
    • trents
Keep in mind that with manufactured food products, "gluten free" doesn't equate to no gluten. Things that are naturally gluten free can be cross-contaminated with gluten in the field, in shipping and in processing. In the U.S. companies can use the gluten free label as long as the product doesn't exceed 20ppm of gluten. That amount still may cause a reaction in some people.

Dd10 was tested for celiac four years ago bc two siblings were dx’d (positive labs and biopsies). Her results at the time were positive ema  and ttg (7x the UL), but a negative biopsy. We checked again three months later and her ttg was still positive (4x the UL), but ema and biopsy were negative. Doc said it was “potential celiac” and to keep eating gluten, but we were concerned about harming her growth and development while young and had her go gluten-free because we felt the labs and ema in particular were very suggestive of early celiac, despite the negative biopsies. She also had stomach aches and lethargy when eating it. We just felt it’d be better to be safe than sorry. Now, four years later, she doesn’t want to be gluten-free if she doesn’t “have to be,” so underwent a 12 week gluten challenge. She had labs done before starting and all looked great (celiac panel all negative, as expected.) Surprisingly, she experienced no noticeable symptoms when she began eating gluten again, which we felt was a positive sign. However, 12 weeks in, her labs are positive again (ttg 4x the UL and ema positive again as well). Doc says that since she feels fine and her previous two biopsies showed nothing, she can just keep eating gluten and we could maybe biopsy again in two years. I was looking up the ema test and the probability of having not just one but two false positives, and it seems ridiculously low.  Any advice? Would you biopsy again? She’s old enough at this point that I really feel I need her buy-in to keep her gluten-free, and she feels that if the doc says it’s fine, then that’s the final word — which makes me inclined to biopsy again and hope that it actually shows damage this time (not because I want her to have celiac like her sisters, but because I kind of think she already does have it, and seeing the damage now would save her more severe damage in the long run that would come from just continuing to eat gluten for a few more years before testing again.)  Our doc is great - we really like him. But we are very confused and want to protect her. One of her older sibs stopped growing and has lots of teeth problems and all that jazz from not catching the celiac disease sooner, and we don’t want to get to that point with the younger sis. fwiw- she doesn’t mind the biopsy at all. It’s at a children’s hospital and she thinks it’s kind of fun. So it’s not like that would stress her out or anything.
