The Lemonade Diet

My cousin and her husband are raving about the "lemonade diet" which is basically a liquid diet, where you drink a mix of lemonade, (real) maple syrup, and chili pepper....anybody know how successful this is, how to do it gluten-free, and whether it is ok for a hypoglycemic? I've tried to e-mail the "founder" people, but not gotten any response yet...

I've heard of it...years ago...but haven't tried it. From what I understand it's a detox/cleanse diet.

I've done it before...for a whole three days, hehe. Its AKA the Master Cleanse. In those 3 days, I did drop about 10 pounds, mostly water weight I'm assuming. The fast is safe for diabetics when used with molasses instead of maple syrup (molasses tastes NASTY in the lemonade though) so I'm assuming it would be safe for hypoglycemic, but to be sure, you might want to search through the MC forums or post a question. There is tons of info here: Open Original Shared Link.

I did this for 10 days back in October '06. I never felt better. It was easier than I thought too. I still cooked meals for my family and was never tempted to eat while on the fast. I lost 12 lbs in those 10 days. I slowly gained it back though when I started eating gluten free. This was the beginning for me to figure out that gluten was not good for me. I had been having pains in my thumbs and was worried it was arthritis, but hadn't been diagnosed yet. By the 10th day of the fast the joints in my thumbs felt much better. So I did a search on 'food allergy joint pain'. After lots of looking and researching I ended up here.

Sounds like it would send me into a sugar-shock coma. Seriously. I have hyperglycemia and this would wreak havoc on my blood sugar. Drinking this concoction for a day, much less consecutive days, does not sound healthy to me. However, I'm just one person and I've heard some people swear by such "fasts."

Dear sweetfudge,

I do not think it is safe for us. Hypoglycemia is very dangerous. I really think the Zone Diet would be wiser. It definitely keeps blood sugar levels steadier. This does not even appear remotely safe for people with reactive hypoglycemia.

Sincerely,

NoGluGirl

I did the lemonade diet as well and I am gluten-free and also hypoglycemic and was TERRIFIED over the notion of what my body might do on this diet. I stayed on it for 7 days and felt great! I NEVER felt light-headed, weak or anything. I think you'll be real happy on it. Just make sure you are constantly drinking that or the water. Don't let yourself get hungry. Since then I've gotten back to eating poorly including gluten and I don't feel good so tomorrow I'm back on the lemonade diet again. I hope you enjoy the benefits.

Dear Tlyn,

Thank you for the info. This is surprising. Being hypoglycemic makes things quite difficult. That was good to find out! I may have to look this up, too!

Sweetfudge, are you doing it to detox or to lose weight?

If you want to lose weight, the best way is to change your eating habits and lose it slowly. If you go on a fast, as soon as you start back to normal eating, you will gain the weight back.

Plus, on a severe diet, you lose too much muscle, then when you gain back, it will likely be fat, so you end up "fatter" than you were to begin with. It's the old yo-yo diet.

I gained a lot of weight from hs graduation till the beginning of my sophomore year in college -- 20 pounds. I tried every diet I could to no avail. Once I changed my way of eating to something healthier and better balanced, I lost the weight over a period of a year and have never gained it back (that was 25 years ago). I also incorporated exercise into my lifestyle.

So, my vote is, if it's a detox plan for you, give it a try. If it's a diet to lose weight, skip it.

hm...what if it's both? i know i need to do the diet changes, and especially EXERCISE...but I just wanted a jump start, something to help me see quick results, and feel better...maybe i ask for too much

yeah, definitely can't do that diet (b/c of my IBS). plus, i've lost all but 4 of the lbs i wanted to lose by good ol' fashioned restricted dieting (medical-restrictions, that is), exercising, and getting my thyroid in order :) thanks for the info though. i've had some relatives lose quite a bit of weight on this diet.

Cristiana, that sounds like a great approach and I will be looking forward to the results. I am in the same boat as you. I don't experience overt symptoms with minor, cross contamination level exposures so I sometimes will indulge in those "processed on equipment that also processes wheat . . ." or items that don't specifically claim to be gluten free but do not list gluten containing grains in their ingredient list. But I always wonder if I am still experiencing sub acute inflammatory reactions. I haven't had any celiac antibody blood work done since my diagnosis almost 25 years ago so I don't really have any data to go by.

I've been reflecting on this further. The lowest TTG I've ever managed was 4.5 (normal lab reading under 10).  Since then it has gone up to 10.   I am not happy with that.  I can only explain this by the fact that I am eating out more these days and that's where I'm being 'glutened', but such small amounts that I only occasionally react. I know some of it is also to do with eating products labelled 'may contain gluten' by mistake - which in the UK means it probably does! It stands to reason that as I am a coeliac any trace of gluten will cause a response in the gut.  My villi are healed and look healthy, but those lymphocytes are present because of the occasional trace amounts of gluten sneaking into my diet.   I am going to try not to eat out now until my next blood test in the autumn and read labels properly to avoid the may contain gluten products, and will then report back to see if it has helped!

Hi, I posted before about my son's legs shaking after gluten. I did end up starting him on vit b and happily he actually started sleeping better and longer.  Back to my 4 year old. She had gone back to meltdowns, early wakes, and exhaustion. We tested everything again and her ferritin was lowish again (16) and vit d was low. After a couple weeks on supplements she is cheerful, sleeping better and looks better. The red rimmed eyes and dark circles are much better.   AND her Ttg was a 3!!!!!! So, we are crushing the gluten-free diet which is great. But WHY are her iron and vit d low if she's not getting any gluten????  She's on 30mg of iron per day and also a multivitamin and vit d supplement (per her dr). That helped her feel better quickly. But will she need supplements her whole life?? Or is there some other reason she's not absorbing iron? We eat very healthy with minimal processed food. Beef maybe 1x per week but plenty of other protein including eggs daily.  She also says her tummy hurts every single morning. That was before the iron (do not likely a side effect). Is that common with celiac?

Celiac disease is the most likely cause, but here are articles about the other possible causes:
