Hi everyone,

Sorry, this isn't going to be a very cheery post. I got glutened last wednesday, and it was awful. But it's monday noq and I thought it would be over by now!! I just feel like I can't deal with this anymore. I keep cutting things out, suspecting things, being afraid of everything that goes in my mouth..... And I'm usually not feeling like this but when I get gluteend I feel like I shouldn't have to go to work, shouldn't have to deal with people, and should just get to sleep until it's gone. And why isn't there anything out there that we can take to alleiviate the pain of this yet?? I'm ok with having celiac when I'm not glutened - I can give everything up and still be a pretty happy person - but isn't that enough? getting glutened is just not fair.

I'm sorry, just had to get that out.

:(

I am so sorry that you got glutened, yep it is the worst & makes you feel emotionally drained.

I wish you could have slept all day...

Please try to do some nice things for yourself all week & take it easy...

Next week will be better!!!

Get mad!@ Punch your pillow out, it won't mind. Look at everyone with the gluteny-goodness with disdain! Ask questions, order pie the way you want it, shout it out to the world! Then forgive everyone, especially yourself. It will get better...

I completly understand how you feel. Most of us feel the same way from time to time. Life would be so much better if there was no gluten!

Dear sansglutengrl,

Yep, I have been there! It sucks. :( Even worse, no one around you gives a crap. They do not have a clue what it is like to deal with this. When I get glutened, I have to down a promethazine, and eventually it kicks in. Then, I am incredibly drowsy and have to sleep for a long time. I get so violently ill at the onset that the medication is the only thing that helps. Being Celiac is not easy to deal with at those times.

Sincerely,

NoGluGirl

Hi again,

I just wanted to thank everyone for your kind words and support. I'm just starting to feel more normal, and phew!! I think I can wear my skinny pants now, that's a plus at least. :)

Thanks again!

p.s - noglugirl, what's a promethazine? would you recommend it?

Glad you're feeling a little better.

Yes, it does suck that not only do we have to make a MAJOR lifestyle change, but are still left to feel the awful effects of a glutening, no matter how careful we've been. I know when I've been glutened, I don't like to have to deal with anyone, and most of them don't feel like dealing with me either( I get a tad on the testy side).

Promethazine is an anti-nausea medication that's quite effective, I used to take it before I figured out my Celiac. I don't have symptoms as bad as NoGluGirl when I'm glutened so i haven't had to use it since I got 'better', but it works quite well for people with bad nausea after a glutening, if you can get it down. It will make you very sleepy though, you won't really be able to work. Imodium can help with nausea too, by reducing the intestinal cramping lower down.

Cristiana, that sounds like a great approach and I will be looking forward to the results. I am in the same boat as you. I don't experience overt symptoms with minor, cross contamination level exposures so I sometimes will indulge in those "processed on equipment that also processes wheat . . ." or items that don't specifically claim to be gluten free but do not list gluten containing grains in their ingredient list. But I always wonder if I am still experiencing sub acute inflammatory reactions. I haven't had any celiac antibody blood work done since my diagnosis almost 25 years ago so I don't really have any data to go by.

I've been reflecting on this further. The lowest TTG I've ever managed was 4.5 (normal lab reading under 10).  Since then it has gone up to 10.   I am not happy with that.  I can only explain this by the fact that I am eating out more these days and that's where I'm being 'glutened', but such small amounts that I only occasionally react. I know some of it is also to do with eating products labelled 'may contain gluten' by mistake - which in the UK means it probably does! It stands to reason that as I am a coeliac any trace of gluten will cause a response in the gut.  My villi are healed and look healthy, but those lymphocytes are present because of the occasional trace amounts of gluten sneaking into my diet.   I am going to try not to eat out now until my next blood test in the autumn and read labels properly to avoid the may contain gluten products, and will then report back to see if it has helped!

Hi, I posted before about my son's legs shaking after gluten. I did end up starting him on vit b and happily he actually started sleeping better and longer.  Back to my 4 year old. She had gone back to meltdowns, early wakes, and exhaustion. We tested everything again and her ferritin was lowish again (16) and vit d was low. After a couple weeks on supplements she is cheerful, sleeping better and looks better. The red rimmed eyes and dark circles are much better.   AND her Ttg was a 3!!!!!! So, we are crushing the gluten-free diet which is great. But WHY are her iron and vit d low if she's not getting any gluten????  She's on 30mg of iron per day and also a multivitamin and vit d supplement (per her dr). That helped her feel better quickly. But will she need supplements her whole life?? Or is there some other reason she's not absorbing iron? We eat very healthy with minimal processed food. Beef maybe 1x per week but plenty of other protein including eggs daily.  She also says her tummy hurts every single morning. That was before the iron (do not likely a side effect). Is that common with celiac?

Celiac disease is the most likely cause, but here are articles about the other possible causes:
