Hi everyone. I was diagnosed two weeks ago with Celiacs. Although my blood tests were normal, my biopsy revealed the disease. Since going gluten free, I feel great. Prior to my diagnosis, I was sick to my stomach daily and had horrible stomach pains. In just two weeks I notice such a difference.

Despite my progress, I feel like I am getting increasingly tired. I used to be a very active person. I can hardly get out of bed now. My body is also sore all over. In addition, I notice that I have bruises all over my body and minor paper cuts are turning into scars. Is this a result of some kind of vitamin deficiency? Two years ago I learned that I have a low B12 and have been taking vitamins daily. Maybe I need more?

If anyone can help. I am so close to feeling normal again!

You could be going through some gluten withdrawal, that is not uncommon. You might also check to see of your supplements are gluten free. I take sub lingual B-12 (it disolved under your tongue and goes right into your bloodstream)

It took me almost 6 months to feel better. If you are strict with you diet you will feel better soon.

It is going to take a while to heal. I agree completely that you should add the sublingual B12 to your vitamin regime. Also make sure you have eliminated any sources of CC including in personal care products and craft type stuff. It will also help the healing process if you try to consume only whole unprocessed foods as much as you can.

I am glad you are seeing some progress, try not to forget that it took years for you to become ill and getting well will take a while also.

I've been gluten-free for a few weeks myself. After the first week I felt great and then something happened and I have good days and bad days. I think part of that is your body adjusting to new foods and lack of old foods (lots of sugar for me for instance). Are you eating enough protein? I try to make sure I have protein with every meal and snack so if I eat a piece of fruit- I put almond butter on it or have a handful of almonds. For meals I make sure I have chicken or fish or even red meat a few times a week. Also make sure you are eating plenty of dark green leafy veggies and staying hydrated.

I know that a vitamin K definciency can lead to easy bruising but you need to have a physician run blood tests to know what you are decficient in. It also might be helpful to see a dietician who can help put you on supplements in the areas you are deficient until your body heals.

I've been gluten free since the first of the year. I felt great after a couple of weeks also. I did go through a tired streak for a few weeks. I keep finding things that I've been eating that have gluten. So many things to watch for. I've had a few setbacks and am still seeing other improvements. I guess we all have to live and learn. Don't forget to check cosmetics, shampoo, lotion too. I was using a lip gloss that I found had gluten. Good Luck Wendy

      @klmgarland, My dermatitis herpetiformis didn't clear up until I became meticulous about cross contamination. I cut out gluten-free oats and all gluten-free foods, dairy and gluten-free rice. Additionally, getting the right amount of protein for my body weight helped significantly in my body's healing process ... along with supplementing with enough of all the vitamins and minerals ... especially Zinc and Magnesium. I went from 70kg to 82kg in a year. Protein with each meal 3 times daily, especially eggs at breakfast made the difference. I'm not sure whether iodine was a problem for me, but I can tolerate iodine no problem now. I'm off Dapsone and feel great. Not a sign of an itch. So there is hope. I'm not advocating for the use of Dapsone, but it can bring a huge amount of relief despite it's effect on red blood cells. The itch is so distracting and debilitating. I tried many times to get off it, it wasn't until I implemented the changes above and was consistent that I got off it. Dermatitis Herpetiformis is horrible, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

      Thank you so very much Scott.  Just having someone understand my situation is so very helpful.  If I have one more family member ask me how my little itchy skin thing is going and can't you just take a pill and it will go away and just a little bit of gluten can't hurt you!!!! I think I will scream!!

Considering Dapsone is a logical and often necessary step for many with DH to break the cycle of itching and allow the skin to heal while you continue your detective work; it is a powerful tool to give you back your quality of life and sleep. You are not failing; you are fighting an incredibly steep battle. For a more specific direction, connecting with a dedicated celiac support group (online or locally) can be invaluable, as members exchange the most current, real-world tips for avoiding cross-contamination that you simply won't find in a pamphlet. You have already done the hardest part by getting a correct diagnosis. Now, the community can help you navigate the rest. If you have DH you will likely also want to avoid iodine, which is common in seafoods and dairy products, as it can exacerbate symptoms in some people.
