I have had "digestive issues" since i'm a toddler... long story short after seeing regular doctors and specialists.. they said "oh you must have ibs".. fast foward a few years and someone (not even a doctor) mentions that i should get tested for a gluten allergy... ding ding ding.. blood test was positive... now problem is i'm still getting sick... i'd like to figure out what else i'm allergic to.. but i'm sick of bouncing around from doctor to doctor who seems to know less than the last... i just got health insurance... empire.. and i am looking for a doctor on long island to go to... for allergy testing and then also a gi... any suggestions? thanks

I'm not sure where you are at on Long Island, I am in the E. Islip area--my doctor is head of medicine at Southside Hospital and he says the best gastro doc is Mary Meena Thomas. She is in Bayshore--375 E Main St, Suite 21--phone # is 968-8288. Your insurance may require a referral though.

We have a very good support group that meets in W. Islip, we have a meeting tonight. We are having a Vendor Fair on the 29th at the college in Farmingdale. If you would like more info, just pm me--ok.

If you're on Long Island, I would suggest going to Columbia in the city. They have a special celiac center and Dr. Green is one of the leading doctors in the country on celiac research.

I go to Dr. Gary Schwartz of Gastroenterology Associates. They are located at 1103 Stewart Avenue in Garden City. 516-248-3737. I love Dr. Schwartz. He really listens to you and doesn't have one of those doctor superiority complexes.

They also have a website - Open Original Shared Link.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
