Vaginal Discharge And Celiac Disease

Hi Everybody,

I decided to write what I am going through after seeing how much it can be helpful hearing other people 's thoughts.. I am frustrated like many others and want to tell you what I've been going through;

Everything started almost like around 3 years ago. I was having some discharge problem w/ a terrible odor which means an infection...and I decided to go to a gynecologist to figure out what it was. Two different doctors wasted my one year without finding out what it is and sent me to a very well known gynecologist. So this new doctor examined me and she knew smt was wrong w/ nutrients and found out that I have D vitamin deffiency. I started taking high dozages of D vitamins and she wasn't really sure what caused it. Discharge was still there. She was doing all kinds of blood tests every 2 months. Then after a year my A vitamin came out low. That's when she said I have the celiac disease.

I started to read about what it is .All I can say ,I feel like smt is wrong with me overall, but I am having a hard time locating it besides my discharge.

I decided to get another opinion who is from a celiac disease center, another well known doctor. She ran some tests and found out I have the genes and then she did a bowel X -ray and biopsy. She found out I have a pylori gastritis not celiac. I was very happy and went to my gynecologist . But she was still very confident that I have this. She said it is because I was getting a lot of D vitamins all past 1 year , it made the tests come out negative. She does not trust the celiac tests.. I am stucked with a discharge and 2 very well known good doctors with different opinions.

Is anyone heard of it or have a discharge problem with celiac disease? Thank you so much for any replys in advance..

Celiac disease can cause your body to do all sorts of crazy things. Try going gluten free for a few weeks and see if it clears your problem up. It won't hurt you to try the diet AND it may be the answer to your gyn issues.

Have you ever heard of Celiac Disease affecting women this way? I myself have been given instructions to not go gluten free diet until after biopsy on June 19, and am twiddling my thumbs waiting, and eating "badly",, and feeling crappy! ;) and am trying to get as much info as possible with symptoms etc.. thanks!

what about yeast infections? are they common for celiacs? i hear eating yogurt every day can help prevent them.. i can't do dairy.. anyone know if soy yogurt works?

Your instruction are good. Continue eating gluten as difficult as it may be if you have a biopsy scheduled soon.

Thanks, I am trying.. It's not too bad, anyway, a month ago I still thought it was just a normal thing to have stomach aches every night.. And, it's giving me a chance to say goodbye to all my gluten friends! :D

I know this is a kind of old post, but I wanted to register and respond to it because this is EXACTLY the same symptom that has led me to explore wheat and gluten myself. I discovered it by accident. For years and years and years and years I have had problems with abnormal discharge. Doctors would just deny that anything is wrong with me, but it is not normal to have to wear a panty liner and change it three times a day. Its not normal odor, and its not in my mind, boyfriends have commented.. I finally quit having relationships because it was just too embarrassing. I'm not unclean... I would experiment with diet, give up soy, give up dairy, give up anything I could think of. Nothing ever seemed to work. So.. I also have other symptoms that I just always wrote off to just me.. not enough to really interfere with my life but, I have always had intestinal discomfort. I always assumed it was some kind of IBS. Never diagnosed.. it never has interfered enough and I've never had health insurance so I never bothered with it. I have migraines a lot which I guess could be a symptom of it. Anyway, so I started recently thinking more and more about diet being related to this and I saw something on youtube about wheat. So I went on the diet a week ago and I have carefully given up all forms of gluten. I also have been taking lactade when I eat dairy just as a precation because I read that if villi are destroyed lactose can be a problem and all of my symptoms are gone. I am amazed. Now I'm trying to decide if I want to just stick with it or if I want to go back on wheat and go to the doctor for a diagnosis. I don't know what to do. But in any case I'm pretty sure now that it is gluten for me and I'm thrilled to have finally for the first time in years gotten rid of that horrid discharge. I really believe that gluten is my problem. I have no idea if it is celiac disease or if its just an intolerance or what but I know it is wheat. I don't think its just lactose intolerance because I've gone off dairy before with no results. I guess its possible to be both, but not just lactose. Anyway I saw your post and wanted to respond because your symptoms were so similar to mine. I hope you got everything worked out with your doctor. In the end (if you are still reading this board) did they decide if you do in fact have a problem with gluten? Or did your problem turn out to be something else?

Calicoe Rookie

Hi:

I think some people may be shy to talk about this here, because it is so personal. But, you can feel sure that wheat and gluten intolerances have multi-system impacts, and that includes our reproductive system. My menstrual cramps and associated symptoms were so horrible on wheat that I was starting to classify as someone who was disabled for 4-5 days of the month (couldn't get out of bed, or barely lift my head the migraines were so bad, and so shrill). In addition, I started having some weird vaginal discharge and afflictions that went away with the wheat. There wasn't a bad odor though, so you may want to definitely follow up on that, because it can be a symptom of something else which could be much worse. I would get a baseline checkup now that everything seems normal, just to be sure.

Wheat is horrid!

I HAVE BEEN GLUTEN FREE FOR FOUR MONTHS, AND STILL HAVE ALOT OF DISCHARGE. NOT ANY SMELL THOUGH, IT CAN BE "MUCUS"LIKE, AND REALLY GROOSES ME OUT. I HAVE NO SYMPTOMS OF YEAST INFECTION. IF IT WERE LINKED TO GLUTEN, WOULD IT BE GONE BY NOW? SO EMBARASSED TO ASK A DR.!!!

If you've only been gluten free 4 months, chances are you're still eating hidden gluten. And based on what I have seen of doctors, the patients are the last people who should be embarrassed! All it takes is to be exposed to a small trace once a week and one can be perpetually sick.

I saw a holistic gyne for this it cleared up after using probiotic suppositories, so it would really be worthwhile to ask. The probiotics I had taken orally did not help. I saw someone had H Pylori... so did I and this problem returned after I took Prevpac (I also spent the whole treatment bedridden from the stuff).

It seems like anomalous things can happen with gluten; I used to get discharges and watering from my eyes when I was eating it every day and my husband has commented that I have bad breath after I accidentally eat it (which happens about 3 times per month... and I am 6 months into the diet).

I am curious if anyone thinks gluten in soap can aggravate vaginal problems. Also I wonder if gluten in mascara can cause discharges and watering. I know people say it can't get in the skin, but what about the mucous membranes?

Please don't be embarrassed to ask a doctor. That's why they are there, to answer all those weird questions about why our bodies do strange things. I always write a little list before I go in, to make sure I don't forget. Ask all your questions in the beginning so that if they need extra time for you they know it up front. These are people that had to touch cadavers and see people insides just to get through school. If its happening to you its going to be happening to someone else, and they need to hear about it :)

well, since everyone else is putting it out there. I myself saw the gyn b/c my pms symptoms have been worse gluten-free (some things are better, some are worse--wierd!) I think it is my body re-adjusting....anyways.....

I've had discharge since I was a little girl. more recently I've been having discharge that is similar to what comes out of my nose when I have a sinus infection or bad cold!!! now that freaked me out. It always seems to happen when I have C and strain to go. I told this the gyno....she didnt say anything. I had an internal ultrasound last week and everything appeared normal except for a cyst on my left ovary ( which she said was breaking apart and was nothing to worry about) I had some hormone tests done, but I have yet to have any response from the gyno...

I'm with you; gyno problems are a huge pain...I have suffered yeast infections for 30 years. I was glad when you could buy maconozole over the counter because I needed it just about every month. I tried everything I could think of to "cure" them. I've been gluten-free for 10 months, with slips, and have had very little problem with the infections.

So glad to read this post. Here's my story:

I had what I thought were recurring yeast infections for about three years. I was buying the over the counter treatment at least once a month. They would come right back. My symtoms were white vaginal discharge, sometimes thick, sometimes thin, but always irritating to the skin of the vagina. No odor or itching. I would wear panty liners to absorb the discharge and at one point I even put in a tampon when I wasn't menstruating just to feel dry. I used to look forward to menstruation because it would make the white discharge go away for a week.

I went to a couple of obgyns and asked them about this issue. None seemed too concerned. They would see the discharge and assume it was a yeast infection and I was prescribed both pills and creams. Then, they started culturing it to see if it was actually yeast....and it WAS NOT. So, they said it is just how my body is and that there is nothing wrong. But I knew that this was not normal.

I had tried cutting out sugar, eating a lot of yogurt and taking acidophillus pills and liquids before when I thought I was having yeast problems. Finally I decided to try a wheat-free/gluten-free diet and that has cured me! I now feel like a relatively normal person. The only issue I have is when I drink wine and hard liquors, which are supposedly gluten-free, my discharge comes back. Also, when I eat some gluten-free baked goods I have a mild reaction (meaning discharge). But, life without the discharge is so much better than life with gluten, so I don't really mind.

Oh, and luckily for the majority of the time that I was having this problem, I was dating a guy who was not grossed out by the discharge during intimacy....because it can be a real self-esteem killer when you have something like this as a symptom. Since the discharge is my only real symptom, I pretty much lie to everyone who asks why I am on a gluten-free diet. I say it's a digestive problem, but it is actually a reproductive system problem. I'm just not comfortable saying that to most people. Only my doctors and a few very close friends know about my discharge problem and now, I am so happy to say, my discharge cure!

Probiotics saved my . . . life. I was having yeast infections for about the 6 months before my diagnosis, including thrush. They continued once a month even after gluten free in July until I got on some probiotics. Now I am back on regular life, and it feels amazing. I highly recommend bringing this up with your dr. so they can help. That's what they are there for, and if you don't tell them, then they can't possibly read your mind and fix it. Ok, work to try and fix it!!

@catnapt, Wheat germ has very little gluten in it.  Gluten is  the carbohydrate storage protein, what the flour is made from, the fluffy part.  Just like with beans, there's the baby plant that will germinate  ("germ"-inate) if sprouted, and the bean part is the carbohydrate storage protein.   Wheat germ is the baby plant inside a kernel of wheat, and bran is the protective covering of the kernel.   Little to no gluten there.   Large amounts of lectins are in wheat germ and can cause digestive upsets, but not enough Gluten to provoke antibody production in the small intestines. Luckily you still have time to do a proper gluten challenge (10 grams of gluten per day for a minimum of two weeks) before your next appointment when you can be retested.

Hello, @asaT, I'm curious to know whether you are taking other B vitamins like Thiamine B1 and Niacin B3.  Malabsorption in Celiac disease affects all the water soluble B vitamins and Vitamin C.  Thiamine and Niacin are required to produce energy for all the homocysteine lowering reactions provided by Folate, Cobalamine and Pyridoxine.   Weight gain with a voracious appetite is something I experienced while malnourished.  It's symptomatic of Thiamine B1 deficiency.   Conversely, some people with thiamine deficiency lose their appetite altogether, and suffer from anorexia.  At different periods on my lifelong journey, I suffered this, too.   When the body doesn't have sufficient thiamine to turn food, especially carbohydrates, into energy (for growth and repair), the body rations what little thiamine it has available, and turns the carbs into fat, and stores it mostly in the abdomen.  Consuming a high carbohydrate diet requires additional thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  Simple carbohydrates (sugar, white rice, etc.) don't contain thiamine, so the body easily depletes its stores of Thiamine processing the carbs into fat.  The digestive system communicates with the brain to keep eating in order to consume more thiamine and other nutrients it's not absorbing.   One can have a subclinical thiamine insufficiency for years.  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so the symptoms can wax and wane mysteriously.  Symptoms of Thiamine insufficiency include stunted growth, chronic fatigue, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi (diarrhea, abdominal pain), heart attack, Alzheimer's, stroke, and cancer.   Thiamine improves bone turnover.  Thiamine insufficiency can also affect the thyroid.  The thyroid is important in bone metabolism.  The thyroid also influences hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, and menopause.  Vitamin D, at optimal levels, can act as a hormone and can influence the thyroid, as well as being important to bone health, and regulating the immune system.  Vitamin A is important to bone health, too, and is necessary for intestinal health, as well.   I don't do dairy because I react to Casein, the protein in dairy that resembles gluten and causes a reaction the same as if I'd been exposed to gluten, including high tTg IgA.  I found adding mineral water containing calcium and other minerals helpful in increasing my calcium intake.   Malabsorption of Celiac affects all the vitamins and minerals.  I do hope you'll talk to your doctor and dietician about supplementing all eight B vitamins and the four fat soluble vitamins because they all work together interconnectedly.

Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind

Thank you for your post, @nanny marley It is interesting what you say about 'It's OK not to sleep'. Worrying about sleeping only makes it much harder to sleep.  One of my relatives is an insomniac and I am sure that is part of the problem.  Whereas I once had a neighbour who, if she couldn't sleep, would simply get up again, make a cup of tea, read, do a sudoku or some other small task, and then go back to bed when she felt sleepy again.  I can't think it did her any harm - she lived  well into her nineties. Last week I decided to try a Floradix Magnesium supplement which seems to be helping me to sleep better.  It is a liquid magnesium supplement, so easy to take.  It is gluten free (unlike the Floradix iron supplement).  Might be worth a try.
