A New Weight Loss Support/accountability Thread

Okay, I think I am really back on track, finally. I will be coaching at an overnight basketball camp for a week in June and I am motivated to lose what I can before that. It is the camp that I went to in high school and the camp owner will be there and remembers me. His words of wisdom for me when I got married were, "Now don't you go and get fat for him!". I will probably be the oldest coach there (a whopping 44!) and I don't want to be this heavy.

I've done great with eating low carb and exercising for the past week. I'm back to 171-1/2, which is still discouraging, but at least I'm headed in the right direction. I have a very athletic 5' 7" frame, but I can't hide that much weight. My revised goal is to get to 162 by June 15th. It's a stretch, but I'd rather set a high goal and work hard for it. Even if I end up at 165 it will be better than where I'm at now.

After suffering from major carb cravings for the first few days I feel great. When I only eat meat, almond butter, fruits and vegetables I feel really good. I just can't seem to lose weight unless I do low carb with rice or bread once or twice a week at the most.

Kat - I think your motivation headed up here. I'll try to clone it and send it south! I am definitely motivated now and hope you get yours back.

Hightop girl - how are your clothes fitting? If you've increased your exercise quite a bit maybe you're gaining muscle weight? A better test than weight is how clothes fit.

Thanks Lonewolf for the encouragement. I am a bit impatient with myself, and the weighing in is just a form of self torture, so i think I am going to try (we shall see) to only weigh about once a week. I saw my 21 year old daughter last weekend. She saw me at Christmas when I was 5-8 pounds lighter, and said that I looked more muscular than she has ever seen me... and she has seen me at all sorts of fitness levels. She said that I no longer have skinny grandma arms :D what ever that means. I am trying to remember that I am healthier than I was at my thinnest and at my biggest ;) but it isn't easy. The truth is, when I first got sick, I got way too thin, but I liked it. Then it totally reversed and I got too big. Maybe I am where I should be, I just don't like it... and I am 45 on Tuesday, and I guess I really can't expect to look 21 anymore, or am I just giving up. My clothes fit (at least most of them), and today I did a 2 hour mountain bike ride and rode hard, and then ran 5 miles hard. Last year at this time I couldn't even do this same ride, and could never have run after.

Lonewolf, I think you will be ready for the camp. You seem very sensible about setting the goal and then sticking to it. Nothing like your old coach to make you want to succeed :rolleyes:

We will just keep encouraging each other... you to stay on track, and me to be reasonable.

Well, I am back on the scale this morning. I haven't really gained or lost, which i guess should at least make me somewhat happy. I don't weigh as much as at my highest a few weeks ago, but not my lowest and goal either. My birthday was yesterday, and my husband took me for gluten free pizza and then I had my first gluten free birthday cake. The pizza was so good, but really salty. I wanted to take the leftovers to work today, but I probably should leave them in the fridge. The cake will be no problem... will make a great door stop. :lol: I have revised that goal to 5 pounds instead of 10, but I don't know. My body is really unpredictable.

Hi all

I haven't posted in a while, but I've been dealing with other things.

For reasons not related to weight, I'm now grain, starch and sugar free (except for the occasional cheat.) Since I was having a lot of bloating I decided to to weigh myself after two weeks on the new regime and start counting from there. So 1 week into it, I'm down two pounds.

Have not been able to start working out in earnest 'cause I'm way too anemic and my heart can't take the extra stress. I have added a walk at the end of the day and I'll try to add small things throughout the day. Hopefully I'll get this anemia resolved over the next few months so I can at least start doing stuff in my garden.

Hope you get things under control soon with the anemia, but it sounds like your diet changes are helping at least with the weight!

Good to hear that you're motivated again. Funny how when we have an upcoming event, the motivation just pops in. I'm with you on the rice/bread only once or twice a week. It's tough, but it works.

I wish I could answer your question, but I can only tell you what works for me. Limiting my starches to only a couple times a week (rice, potato, gluten-free bread, etc.) and eating mostly veggies & fruit brings about weight loss every time.

So, as it goes, my motivation has returned due to as upcoming event (sound familiar Liz?). I haven't gained back any of the weight that I lost, so I'm still hovering around 162, but I haven't exactly been making an effort.

Seems the trend these days is revising the goal, so here's my revision with my latest goal:

I'd like to lose 4 lbs by mid-June - that would put me at 158. That's where I was last year before the winter weight gain.

I'm on it.

Just a quick check-in. I'm at 170, so heading in the right direction (down 1-1/2 pounds in 5 days, I'm happy with that). But, I had a major carb craving this afternoon and overdid it. Will get back on track this weekend, holiday or not.

Hi all. It looks like the spring weather has you all headed in the right direction. We have graduation this week, and I am trying to enjoy it by cutting portions and. As you know, I have an obsession with dates. I ran out pretty early this week and haven't bought any. That alone is at least 400 calories each day. I don't know what to do about this salt/potato chip craving. It is probably my only other real diet problem. I guess I need to just "suck it up" and quit eating them. I have never really been like this before. I haven't weighed in since Wed. so I have no idea what I weigh. I am going to wait a little longer and get through this graduation weekend first.

With summer coming and all the fresh fruit and veggies we should all be in heaven this summer.

I've been working out - at the gym ... yaay ! It's not so bad. I actually look forward to sweating. I've been walking more because the weather has been awesome. I think I'm at about 163 - looks like I haven't lost any lbs, but I'm working in the right direction.

I'm still having food issues - nighttime is the worse. Yesterday I ate great all day - fruits, veggies, etc., and then the evening came: Nachos. What was I thinking? I spent 45 minutes on the treadmill and then ate nachos?!

I think today I'll prep my veggies, put the cheese in the outside fridge (so I don't have to look at it), and do an upper body workout and 20 minutes of Kick Punch Crunch (cardio). My arms are getting pretty loosy goosy. I'm 41 this month - I'd better get that under control while I still can. Henry's has Red Bell Peppers and pineapple on sale, so I'm going to do that too. I find that as long as I have good foods prepped and ready to go that I don't have as much trouble avoiding the naughty stuff. I guess I'm just lazy.

It cracks me up that I've been in these weight loss threads since last year & I've managed to gain 5 lbs. :huh: What's up with that?

Enough about me - how's everyone else doing?

Hi Ladies,

I know that it has been quite some time since I have posted anything about my diet happenings. I have been really good especially when we go out for dinner. Well somewhat. I have been really busy with school, I have gotten into the actual transcription of some of the fake Docs and it is going pretty good sometimes not especially when the doc has a thick accent of some kind. My weight is still the same but of course is fluctuates by a few pounds, the last time that I weighed myself it put me at 151lbs but that was not on empty I had been drinking some tea.

Ok so here are my meals for the last few days:

rice chex cereal with milk (box has gluten free right on the box)

D- Chicken salad from this place called Corner backery the salad consisted of chicken, apple chunks, raisens, and lots of mayo. I ate this and seemed to be fine from it.

Hi everyone,

The thread is fizzling out again, but i'm here to say - I've lost 2 lbs since my last post. I guess exercising and eating right really does work. I'd be totally satisfied if I could just get down to 155. I think it's the fat (like in cheese) that's my big problem.

This whole gluten-free thing has really gotten much easier. Anymore, it's just routine and preparation (and, sticking to my guns when someone tries to give me the business). It makes dieting easier, that's for sure.

I don't know what to do about this salt/potato chip craving. It is probably my only other real diet problem.

This sounds gross, but when I'm craving salty stuff, I'll shake a little salt into my palm and lick it off (just like a tequilla shot). I'll wait a minute, see if I'm still craving it - if so, another small shake. If not, then yay! I subdue the craving without the calories...Strange, but effective.

Of course, I have low blood pressure, so this is safe for me. If you have other health considerations, you should think before you do this.

HI Ladies

We had a really great weekend, had a highschool graduation party to attend on Saturday. The graduation class was a total of 80, my husband cusin lives in a small town, so they live out in the country. We brought our 4-wheeler which all the men wanted to ride because it goes really fast, so my husband rode his uncles and had our daughter with him. She got hurt, got her nose bruised and lost a baby tooth in the process, she hit the handle bar when they went over a little bump and she wanted to get crazy dramtic going over the bump and hit her head on the front bar, my husband did not get a hold of her fast enough so he feels really bad for her getting hurt. Usually we bring all saftey equipment to be safe, but my daughter did want to ride until she saw her 6 yr old cusin ride with his daddy so she had too as well.

The meal that we was offered for Saturday was Hot dogs, onions, beans, fruit and cake. Everything with gluten was there. I thought that we were going to have a choise of Hamburgers too, so I came prepared for that I brought my own cheese and gluten-free bun. NO Hamburgers, so my stuff stayed in the car. I was hungry so I ate all of the stuff that was provided, it I am going to mess up on purpose I might as well eat it all.

I am almost done with school, I have to be completed by June 30, and on top of that we are moving on the 27th, finally got the house gone, I will be able to use the little gym on the property, and use the pool for some exercise too, which is the best for you as far as shock absorption on your legs, hips, back, and everything else but you get more resistance with the water. In high school when I was on the swim team, we would always fight with the football team on whos work out was harder thiers or ours, we always invited them to join us, when they saw us do lap after lap they never wanted to jump in. Ok! I'm sorry I rambling on now, here is my meals for the week so far. My weight for this week is 148 lbs

I am headed to my 1/2 ironman this weekend. I am glad to get to relax a bit after that. I did visit a trainer today that feels she can get my weight back on track when I get back. I have held steady for the last couple of weeks, so that is actually encouraging. I hope you are all making progress.

Hi Ladies,

We are defiantly moving next week, the apartment is nice that we are moving into next Thursday. I will be more active at the apartments, because 1. I will be walking the dog becuase, no yard, 2. 24 hour fitness facility on site I believe that I saw a treadmill, big ball, stairmaster, weights, and other stuff. 3. Two swimming pools were I can do lots of arobic exercises no lab swimming, too small, and I won't have to worry about my ankles, I can have the resistance that I want with out worring about my feet twisting. So as ya'll can imagine I will be quite busy for the next two weeks with trying to get done with school by the 30th, plus packing and moving by the 26th, which my internet service maybe down for a while, so I have to get my school done by the 26th as well.

Ok so here are my meals for the last couple of days.

Hi everyone,

I am 23 years old, and I am waiting to have a biopsy to confirm that I have Coeliac disease. Since I got the blood tests back that showed up the Coeliac issue, (about 2months ago) I tried cutting out gluten and noticed a massive improvement in my symptoms. I have always been slim/curvy (UK size 8-10) however during the last 2 months I have gone up 2 dress sizes and its really getting me down.

My doctor has told me to reintroduce gluten to my diet so that the biopsy will show accurate symptoms etc, which I understand, but I'm not enjoying the return to pain/bloating etc! I also seem to be reacting to lactose, just to complicate things a bit more.

What I don't understand though, is how have I put so much weight on in the last 2 months, when I've mainly been eating fruit and veg, tuna, a small amount of basmati rice, and not an awful lot else??? None of my clothes fit me, I'm off work with depression, I have a history of eating disorders, and everything is getting a bit much for me to deal with!

Can anyone suggest ways for me to lose the weight?

I try to exercise (I bought a 'stepper' which I use about 3-4 times a week, and I do sit ups etc.) but I am quite badly anaemic at the moment so have very little energy. The only thing I can think of is to revert back to the eating disorder mindset, which I dont particularly want to do, but I'm struggling to come up with another solution.

My 'new' stomach fat is quite firm - could this be water retention?

Any advice would be really appreciated!!!

I finished the 1/2 ironman over the weekend. It was the last thing on my list to do to prove that I was healthy again. It was hard but not too bad at all. I am pretty swollen everywhere from it, so I will probably wait to weigh until next week. I am going to try to get in to see a trainer today about my diet and then next week to do the other stuff (weight and body fat etc) so maybe I can jusdge my progress in ways other than just the scale. I need to cut back the food intake again now that I won't be training so much. Who knows, maybe I will lose a couple of pounds in the process.

:huh: I could use some internet support to lose 20 kilos. I start off fine and then I sabotage once and screw the rest of the diet and give up on myself. :(

People check in periodically. Someone designated Friday as weigh in day, but one person prefers Mondays, so she'll be good all weekend. It's up to you. Some people post their meals for the day/week. Again, whatever helps you to stay on track.

I am 4 days and counting on being able to start using the gym/pools at my apartments that we will be moving into, so for now I am using as my exercise excuse of packing and then lifting and unpacking all my junk, into the trucks and such. I know that I will be drinking lots of water since we chose to start our move in the middle of the hot Texas summer which has not been too bad with all the orange and red ozone alerts which we will be getting this week. I have done ok on my meals so far, I did weigh myself and unfortunatly it is 150lbs which I think translates into 68 kilos. I had my heavy sandles on. B) With our move I already have my internet scheduled on the day of the move, which I think is awsome of ATT to be able to do, except in the little area that we going to be in we will not be able to our U-Verse which we love, so back to the old Time-Werner on the cable. Ok so here are my meals for the last few days, without Thursday I can't remember what I had that day, I was sleep deprived I guess.

I think maybe it was Yogi that bought the stepper and is really anemic. Take heart. I was really anemic a year ago, and could hardly ride my bike or run. Apparently my running looked slower than walking. It gets better. Don't let your docs give up on the anemia. I finally had to have IV iron, and it was a miracle.

Now for my check in... I went to see a trainer this week and have started circuit training on top of my aerobic stuff for triathlons. She also thought that I needed a lot more protein. It is really odd that she didn't think chocolate and chips and french fries were important food groups.

I think I should join this thread...I went from 182 to 145 on Jenny Craig before I became REALLY sick. Like most I was diagnosed incorrectly and mis-medicated for wrong things for years until my body just shut down. After 6 months of a gluten-free diet I am finally feeling well enough to continue on and not use excuses anymore. Unfortunately I have gained back about 10 lbs....so now I am in the boat to loose about 30 lbs. Maybe having to be accountable will help.

      I had the same thing happen to me at around your age, and to this day it's the most painful experience I've ever had. For me it was the right side of my head, above my ear, running from my nerves in my neck. For years before my outbreak I felt a tingling sensation shooting along the exact nerves that ended up exactly where the shingles blisters appeared. I highly recommend the two shot shingles vaccine as soon as your turn 50--I did this because I started to get the same tingling sensations in the same area, and after the vaccines I've never felt that again.  As you likely know, shingles is caused by chicken pox, which was once though of as one of those harmless childhood viruses that everyone should catch in the wild--little did they know that it can stay in your nervous system for your entire life, and cause major issues as you age.

      Thanks for the info. I recently moved to CA from Wyoming and in that western region the Costco and Sam's /Walmart Brands have many nuts and more products that are labeled gluten free. I was told it's because those products are packaged and processed  in different  plants. Some plants can be labeled  gluten free because the plant does not also package gluten products and they know that for example the trucks, containers equipment are not used to handle wheat, barely or Rye. The Walmart butter in the western region says gluten free but not here. Most of The Kirkland and Members Mark brands in CA say they are from Vietnam. That's not the case in Wyoming and Colorado. I've spoken to customer service at the stores here in California. They were not helpful. I check labels every time I go to the store. The stores where I am are a Sh*tshow. The Magalopoly grocery chain Vons/Safeway/Albertsons, etc. are the same. Fishers and Planters brands no longer say gluten free. It could be regional. There are nuts with sugar coatings and fruit and nut mixes at the big chains that are labeled gluten free but I don't want the fruit or sugar.  It's so difficult I am considering moving again. I thought it would be easier to find safe food in a more populated area. It's actually worse.  I was undiagnosed for most of my life but not because I didn't try to figure it out. So I have had all the complications possible. I don't have any spare organs left.  No a little gluten will hurt you. The autoimmune process continues to destroy your organs though you may not feel it. If you are getting a little all the time and as much as we try we probably all are and so the damage is happening. Now the FDA has pretty much abandoned celiacs. There are no requirements for labeling for common allergens on medications. All the generic drugs made outside the US are not regulated for common allergens and the FDA is taking the last gluten free porcine Thyroid med, NP Thyroid, off the market in 2026. I was being glutened by a generic levothyroxin. The insurance wouldn't pay for the gluten free brand any longer because the FDA took them all off their approved formulary. So now I am paying $147 out of pocket for NP Thyroid but shortly I will have no safe choice. Other people with allergies should be aware that these foreign generic pharmaceutical producers are using ground shellfish shell as pill coatings and anti-desicants. The FDA knows this but  now just waits for consumers to complain or die. The take over of Wholefoods by Amazon destroyed a very reliable source of good high quality food for people with allergies and for people who wanted good reliably organic food. Bezos thought  he could make a fortune off people who were paying alot for organic and allergen free food by substituting cheap brands from Thailand. He didn't understand who the customers were who were willing to pay more for that food and why. I went from spending hundreds to nothing because Bezo removed every single trusted brand that I was buying. Now they are closing Whole foods stores across the country. In CA, Mill Valley store (closed July 2025) and the National Blvd. store in West Los Angeles (closed October 2025). The Cupertino store will close.  In recent years I have learned to be careful and trust no one. I have been deleberately glutened in a restaurant that was my favorite (a new employee). The Chef owner was not in the kitchen that night. I've had  a metal scouring pad cut up over my food.The chain offered gluten free dishes but it only takes one crazy who thinks you're a problem as a food fadist. Good thing I always look. Good thing they didn't do that to food going to a child with a busy mom.  I give big tips and apologize for having to ask in restaurants but mental illness seem to be rampant. I've learn the hard way.          I don't buy any processed food that doesn't say gluten free.  I am a life long Catholic. I worked for the Church while at college. I don't go to Church anymore because the men at the top decided Jesus is gluten. The special hosts are gluten less not gluten free. No I can't drink wine after people with gluten in their mouth and a variety of deadly germs. I have been abandoned and excluded by my Church/Family.  Having nearly died several times, safe food is paramount. If your immune system collapses as mine did, you get sepsis. It can kill you very quickly. I spent 5 days unconscious and had to have my appendix and gall bladder removed because they were necrotic. I was 25. They didn't figure out I had celiac till I was 53. No one will take the time to tell you what can happen when your immune system gets overwhelmed from its constant fighting the gluten and just stops. It is miserable that our food is processed so carelessly. Our food in many aspects is not safe. And the merging of all the grocery chains has made it far worse. Its a disaster. Krogers also recently purchased Vitacost where I was getting the products I could no longer get at Whole Foods. Kroger is eliminating those products from Vitacost just a Bezos did from WF. I am looking for reliable and certified sources for nuts. I have lived the worst consequences of the disease and being exposed unknowingly and maliciously. Once I was diagnosed I learned way more than anyone should have to about the food industry.  I don't do gray areas. And now I dont eat out except very rarely.  I have not eaten fast food for 30 years before the celiac diagnosis. Gluten aside..... It's not food and it's not safe.  No one has got our backs. Sharing safe food sources is one thing we can do to try to be safe.
