Facial Moisturizers & Public Soap

I'm confused about moisturizers (and cosmetics). I use oil of olay w/ sunscreen and haven't been able to tell if it's gluten-free. When I;ve asked questions of cosmetic co.s they mostly seem to be willing to tell me the ingredients, but not if it's gluten-free.

I'm still trying to figure out which ingredients are bad, but even aside from the individual ingredients, are there other things I should worry about? I.e., cross-contamination? I keep getting told I shouldn't worry since I don't eat these things, but I'm not comfortable.

Recommendations for a facial moisturizer with sunscreen? And something for treatment - anti-aging, anti-wrinkle or something like that? A good black mascara?

My other questions is about hand soap. I use Method from Target (its website says the line is gluten-free) and Dial antibacterial. But I don't know about places I go outside my home. How do others handle this? Not worry about it? Carry it? If so, how?

Sorry so many questions. I'm just so confused and I've been avoiding these things altogether. Any advice appreciated.

Your Oil of Olay is most likely not gluten-free. I called the company a short time ago a was told that only the lotion that was for sensitive skin with no perfumes was safe. I use the Garneir line with the bright green bottles, that is all gluten-free but I am not sure about the hair products. I just checked on the skin stuff. I use the daily lotion, scrub with microbeads and the facial wash all with no problems.

As far as the soaps in public restrooms I would not touch them. I simply wash my hands with water and friction and then rewash with my soap as soon as I walk through the door at home.

What kind of shampoo do you use?

Seems you very sensitive like me to topical contact?

I got that from the other shampoo thread which I have now left.

Not getting anywhere on that thread.

Thanks Judy

Grey, I was wondering about the soaps in public bath rooms too!

Usually carry some with me for my use.

Also , after swimming, I once forgot my soap and used the soap in the dispenser and paid dearly for it.

A good black mascara is physicians formula brand, you can get it at walgreens, im sure walmart probably sells it to. I love it. All the physicians formula stuff is gluten free. I think a tube is like 8 bucks, but i have had mine for 2 months and have long and thick eyelashes, so i think it is pretty good lol

I agree about the Olay--when I emailed them, they gave me a buch of jabber--the bottom line was I had to call and ask. Then I was told that they can't guarantee any of their products. I got the feeling they didn't want to be bothered with us.

I never use public restroom soap. I use a paper towel or tissue in my hand so I don't have to touch anything directly. Then, I just rinse my hands under running water.

I called Garnier about their "Long and Strong" shampoo and conditioner, and they are both gluten-free. The rep there was very nice and helpful.

In addition to Garnier, I love ShiKai Everyday shampoo and conditioner--both gluten-free per phone call. Some of their products do contain gluten, but the Everyday ones don't. They also don't have SLS (a strong detergent) and my color tends to stay true longer with it. Plus, I love the smell :D It is so hard to find a "natural" conditioner that dosen't contain gluten. This one is really pretty good.

Grey--I use Neutrogena Moisture Lotion with SPF 15. I verified it is gluten-free by phone, also :)

Paula--Thanks for the Physicians Formula info. I'm going to try their mascara. I've been using Smashbox--it's gluten-free, but I have to order it and it's much more expensive.

I'm glad to hear it wasn't just me who got unhelpful responses from Olay - they were the first call I made re. skin/makeup/soap and I became really confused, overwhelmed, and kind of depressed about how I'd ever figure this out.

I use Garnier shampoo, and they were nice (thank goodness). I haven't tried the long and strong version, but may look for it as I have very long hair -- and i'm not ready to try salon logistics yet!

Target is on the agenda for today - I like Neutrogena, so I'm going to try your suggestion jersey angel & Paula I'm going to look for Physician's Formula mascara.

Thanks everybody!

I use either the Giovanni line, I like the 50/50 shampoo and the Smooth as Silk conditioner or Wegmans baby shampoo. I did just get a bottle of the Garneir conditioner and it came with a shampoo sample. I tried it yesterday and it does seem to be okay. It looked safe but if I haven't called I never want to say for sure unless I have tried it. I am glad to see others use it safely also, sometimes it will take a day or two for the itchy scabs to start. I loose a lot of hair with gluten hair products also so safety is important to my vanity. :)

For the restroom soap, if I was going to use them more than once or twice a year I think I would just carry a small travel bottle of the liquid soap I use at home.

really? can someone tell me what soaps HAVE gluten in them? because, i haven't run across any

tom's of maine moisturizing hand soap has wheat protein in it, for one. It's not the only liquid soap that does, particularly ones that are 'moisturizing' or 'natural.' Tom's is one that used to be used by my secretary, which is why I know about it. Smells great (lavender), but I choose to avoid it and check others. One of my favorite lines, L'Occitaine, has wheat in its hand soaps too, unfortunately.

I haven't gotten a skin rxn (except to Ivory soap, but that's not celiac-related), but I prepare my food with my hands - chopping fruits and veg, cutting meat, and I don't want to have my hand soap be something I have to worry about.

The same thing with cosmetics - I put them on with my hands, and I just don't want to have to think about it. If I end up with mascara running down my face, I wipe it with my hands - why not have it be gluten-free? I don't always have somewhere to wash my hands nearby if I'm travelling or at work.

Some other brands of soap w/ wheat: Roger & Gallet, Mill Creek Botanicals, Korres, Arran Apothecary; oats would be in most Aveeno products, but that's still a debated topic. I doubt they're using the specially gluten-free variety!

General hand soap in a pump is not something that usually has gluten but I've run into some very upscale soaps in those pumps so if you have a topical reaction, I can understand the caution. One place I go, I always forget and use the soap pump and it's a lavendar scented soap that I can't get to rise off my hands and it makes me sneeze. And I always forget until it's on my hands and I smell it. I can rub my nose an hour later with that stuff on my hand and I'll still sneeze. Ewww!

The anit-bacterial soap at my office is jokingly referred to as paint stripper because it breaks out everyone's hands. When you dry your hands after using it, it leaves your hands rough, dry and with tiny white lines. That's not a Celiac issue, just a cheap soap issue. :-)

This seems sarcastic and baiting considering the other conversation in which you are currently embroiled. You have made it abundantly clear that you do not believe people can react to topical gluten. This will continue to come up so perhaps you should consider avoiding these posts? If you feel it necessary to educate us you can post any relevant articles that you come across supporting your belief.

I believe you're overreacting to the poster. It's a valid question that they're asking and not one that pertains at all to topical reactions. They're simply trying to get at the heart of whether common bathroom soaps (the sort that you encounter in public restrooms) often contain gluten and how to recognize them. Your vitriol was not warranted.

Juliebove Rising Star

You can get soap leaves to carrry in your purse. They are usually scented and you would of course have to check the ingredients. I sometimes do not use soap in a public restroom if I am unfamiliar with it. My daughter and I have additional allergies though and we do react topically. If I do use it, I use only one small drop the first time and rinse really well. There are places we go all the time where I have tested their soap and know it is safe. Otherwise I use caution.

Oooh Confused-- watch out!

I have recently been on a cosmetics/ toiletries info finding tear (got glutened from lipgloss-- dh blisters) and Physicians Formula makes this statement on their website:

FAQs

Q. Does Physicians Formula products contain Gluten?

A. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that none of the ingredients, or derivatives in our products do not contain gluten.

Perhaps you have been lucky so far, but I wouldn't recommend that sensitive people buy PF products. My own rectionas are so severe that I will go with a company that can say they are gluten free with no reservations. There are someout there. Why take the risk?

And for anybody who doubts you can get a reaction from cosmetics/ shampoo/ creams, I would tell them to go to my website where I put pictures of the Dh reaction. It can happen.

I have had severe dh since i was 13 years old, it has taken me until NOW at age 22 to find out why.

I now am almost completely dh free. Here's how:

Almost all beauty products have Tocopherol Acetate/Tocopherol Panthenol or some variant, This is also known as Vitamin E. This is WHEAT. Sometimes, it can be cottonseed or vegetable derived, but usually its a blend of wheat or just plain wheat. Stay away from it until u call the company and ask.

ALL CETALPHIL products contain gluten!!! I used to use their face wash, moisturizers... everything and had terrible skin...

Look at your makeup ingredient... Tocopherol Acetate/Panthenol/Vitamin E... Wheat Protein/Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein.... Etc Etc.

I worked at Fashion Bug, and I have worked at Walmart... and my dh would get sooo bad... HERE IS WHY:

Clothing Manufacturers douse their clothing in STARCH to make them look nicer hanging on a hanger.

When u go shopping... Have someone else carry your clothing for you! do not try them on!!!!! seriously. When u do buy clothes, wash them twice, then try them on, if you don't like them... return them. It is not worth it to suffer for weeks just to see if something fits at the store. I have been glutened over and over and over again because of this.

Use: dove beauty bar for sensitive skin to wash face and body

neutrogena pore refiner toner

Neutrogena pore refiner moisturizer spf 15

dermarest eczema moisturizer

smashbox makeup primer

afterglow cosmetics (they are after all made by a celiac...)

Thanks!!!!

I called Cetaphil the other day, and the only gluten free product they have is the "Gentle Skin Cleanser."

Under the circumstances, your decision to have the testing done on day 14 sounds very reasonable. But I think by now you know for certain that you either have celiac disease or NCGS and either way you absolutely need to eliminate gluten from your diet. I don't think you have to have an official diagnosis of celiac disease to leverage gluten free service in hospitals or institutional care and I'm guessing your physician would be willing to grant you a diagnosis of gluten sensitivity (NCGS) even if your celiac testing comes up negative. Also, you need to be aware that oats (even gluten free oats) is a common cross reactor in the celiac community. Oat protein (avenin) is similar to gluten. You might want to look at some other gluten free hot  breakfast cereal alternatives.

After the birth of my daughter nearly 6 years ago, my stools changed. They became thin if they happened to be solid (which was rare) but most of the time it was Bristol #6 (very loose and 6-8x a day). I was on various medications and put it down to that. A few years later I went on this strict "fruit and meat" diet where I just ate meat, fruit, and squash vegetables. I noticed my stools were suddenly formed, if a bit narrow. I knew then that the diarrhea was probably food related not medication related. I tried following the fodmap diet but honestly it was just too complicated, I just lived with pooping 8x a day and wondering how I'd ever get and keep a job once my children were in school.  This past December I got my yearly bloodwork and my triglycerides were high. I looked into Dr. William Davis (wheat belly author) and he recommended going off wheat and other grains. This is the first time in my life I was reading labels to make sure there was no wheat. Within 2 weeks, not only were my stools formed and firm but I was only pooping twice a day, beautiful formed Bristol #4.  Dr. Davis allows some legumes, so I went ahead and added red lentils and beans. Nervous that the diarrhea would come back if I had IBS-D. Not only did it not come back, it just made my stools even bigger and beautiful. Still formed just with a lot more width and bulk. I've also been eating a lot of plant food like tofu, mushrooms, bell peppers, hummus etc which I thought was the cause of my diarrhea before and still, my stools are formed. In January I ran a genetics test because I knew you had to have the genes for celiac. The report came back with  DQ 2.2 plus other markers that I guess are necessary in order for it to be possible to have celiac. Apparently DQ 2.2 is the "rarer" kind but based on my report it's genetically possible for me to have celiac.  I know the next step is to bring gluten back so I can get testing but I am just not wanting to do that. After suffering with diarrhea for years I can't bring myself to do it right now. So that is where I am!

learned I had a high PTH level in 2022 suspected to be due to low vit D  got my vit D level up a bit but still have high PTH   I am 70 yrs old (today in fact) I am looking for someone who also has hyperparathyroidism that might be caused by malabsorption

I am on day 13 of eating gluten  and have decided to have the celiac panel done tomorrow instead of Wed. (and instead of extending it a few more weeks) because I am SO incredibly sick. I have almost no appetite and am not able to consume the required daily intake of calcium to try to keep up with the loss of calcium from the high parathyroid hormone and/or the renal calcium leak.    I have spent the past 15 years working hard to improve my health. I lost 50lbs, got off handfuls of medications, lowered my cholesterol to enviable levels, and in spite of having end stage osteoarthritis in both knees, with a good diet and keeping active I have NO pain in those joints- til now.  Almost all of my joints hurt now I feel like someone has repeatedly punched me all over my torso- even my ribs hurt- I have nausea, gas, bloating, headache, mood swings, irritability, horrid flatulence (afraid to leave the house or be in any enclosed spaces with other people- the smell would knock them off their feet) I was so sure that I wanted a firm diagnosis but now- I'm asking myself is THIS worth it? esp over the past 2 yrs I have been feeling better and better the more I adjusted my diet to exclude highly refined grains and processed foods. I didn't purposely avoid gluten, but it just happened that not eating gluten has made me feel better.   I don't know what I would have to gain by getting a definitive diagnosis. I think possibly the only advantage to a DX would be that I could insist on gluten-free foods in settings where I am unable to have access to foods of my choice (hospital, rehab, nursing home)  and maybe having a medical reason to see a dietician?   please let me know if it's reasonable to just go back to the way I was eating.  Actually I do plan to buy certified gluten-free oats as that is the only grain I consume (and really like) so there will be some minor tweaks I hope and pray that I heal quickly from any possible damage that may have been done from 13 days of eating gluten.

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?
