Don't Know What I Have Please Help

Hello,

I guess I am looking for someone who can say "I have similar symptoms". I don't know if I have celiac or what is going on. Here's my symptoms:

6 months after my second child was born I started to develop severe pain in my upper finger joints. After several doctors visits I finally went to a Rheumatologist who diagnosed me with Psoriatic Arthritis. He put me on methotrexate which is an immune suppressant. It didn't seem to help at all. I stopped taking it because I do not like the idea of drugs and it wasn't working. I was also on Predisone for awhile and that did help with inflammation and pain but I developed pneumonia while on it so I don't like to take that either.

Fast foward a few years. My fingers are disfigured and the pain is tremendous. My rheumatologist says I have the hands of a 60 year old with severe osteo but I'm only 38. I take piroxicam, a NSAID, to help me through the day. I feel the arthritis spreading to my elbows, shoulders and other joints. My rheumatologist suggests Enbrel. My lungs are susceptible to bronchitis so I hate the idea of immune suppressants.

For the last few years I have also noticed small, itchy blisters on my knees. They are intense for a few days and then go away. It seems to happen more in the summer because I'm on my knees a lot with the kids. I thought maybe I'm allergic to the carpet. A few months ago I got one blister on one side of my trunk followed by another on the other side. At first I thought maybe I was coming down with shingles but I read they stick to one side of the body. I never thought much of the blisters because they don't bother me too much. Yesterday I decided to do some searching on google about the blisters and Dermatitis Herpetiformis came up. The photos shown are so extreme. I have only little blisters mostly on my knees and elbows. No one would notice them unless I showed them, the spots are a little red.

As for food problems - food has been making me feel terrible lately. I don't have stomach cramps and my bowels are in good working order but I get extremely bloated even after a small meal. I get terrible heartburn after certain foods (breads). I am usually more full 3 hours after a meal than right after I eat. It feels like it takes hours for me to digest anything. I haven't been cooking for my family lately because after I eat lunch the thought of food makes me feel ill. My iron levels are just below "acceptable" and I can get very lethargic. Especially after eating certain foods.

I haven't been to my doctor yet nor I have I suggested this to my rheumatologist, he seems to like the drugs. I am going to call my regular doc today to make an appointment but I am afraid and not sure what to tell her. Is she going to think I'm nuts? Some people are saying Gluten Free is the new diet fad and everyone thinks they have a gluten intorerance. I know I have something going on but for some reason I'm afraid to mention Celiac.

Any input with be greatly appreciated!

Christine

Christine,

Welcome to the Board! I am sorry that you have had such problems at such a young age. Perhaps you have found some answers here.

The blood panel for Celiac is simple and I think that you should pursue this. Many of your symptoms may indicate Celiac. Many people are diagnosed with Celiac after other ailments are apparent.

Review this site and print off whatever information is pertinent to you and bring it to your doctor. I know that many doctors are not happy when patients self-diagnose from the Internet. But you have to educate yourself and sometimes we have to take our health into our own hands.

I have heard that the Gluten Free Diet may becoming a "fad" diet. That is both good and bad for those of us that are in need of this diet for medical reasons. Never the less, it does bring on awareness.

Please request (require) your doctor to run a Celiac Panel. Although, they are not always accurate. It can rule Celiac in, but not rule it out. If your blood work is negative, you can then pursue the diet and see if you have positive dietary results.

You may have found something that can change your life, for the better. Good luck and if we can help you in any way, just ask.

I would get tested for celiac disease. Do not go gluten-free until after the testing.

I would also get tested for Lyme Disease. Please research it before testing as the test your regular doctor would use is inaccurate. Here is a thread on Lyme Disease Open Original Shared Link=

You can also get more info on Open Original Shared Link. You might post your question there, too. Both diseases have similar symptoms.

The rashes I got from Lyme were generally on my scalp ... they weren't as severe as DH looks, but they were a little blistery looking. I also get joint pain, though the rashes have already gone away with treatment. I also have the same problem with iron levels ... nothing alarming, but I feel overwhelmingly fatigued.

Good luck with your search. Don't give up until you find answers.

I fully agree with your getting tested for both of these diseases. I hope you will keep us updated. I can relate to the arthritis although mine has not been deforming. Also I think lyme arthritis can move around the body a lot, like even change over a few hours. That's what my arthritis did. However, the arthritis meds didn't help me at all. I finally lived on aspirin for years (high doses) until my lyme diagnosis.

Thanks everyone! I have an appointment today with my regular doctor. I have printed up a word doc. from stuff I've cut and pasted both here and other places that I will show her. I also made an appointment with my rheumotolgist for Sept. I would really like to get into the Mayo. I am only a 1 1/2 hour drive from it. I read some posts under the Doctors forum about a great doctor that spealizes in Celiac. My rheum. did his intern there so I am hoping he'll recommend me. He's told me he's never seen anything like my arthritis in anyone so young. I also read some posts about people with RA (very similar to Psoriatic Arthritis) who said you still should do the Enbrel to stop the progression, then do gluten-free, then slowly get off the Enbrel. UGH. Not only do I hate the drugs but my mom gives me grief even when I take a NSAID!

Anyway, if a diet can help me get my body back (as in stopping this chronic pain) I will be very happy. I feel like I am slowly falling apart from the inside out so survival mode as kicked in and I need to figure this thing out. I have a 2 and a 5 year old and I can barely keep up with them. I never wanted to be a "tired mommy" but that's how I feel most of the time.

I think you're on the right track taking this into your own hands. Mayo might be a good idea, but keep in mind that both Mayo and your regular doctor will totally dismiss the idea of chronic Lyme Disease. You would need to read the faq's at Open Original Shared Link to understand why. The thing is, you need a doctor who will do an unbiased differential diagnosis, and if they leave out the fastest growing infectious disease in the country, which also is known to cause all your symptoms, then they are not ruling everything out.

I think it's good that you look into celiac and RA. But, keep in mind that it is NOT uncommon for someone of ANY age to have arthritis from Lyme ... my 14 year old daughter does!!! Plus, those children in Lyme, CT who were all diagnosed with juvenile RA before discovering that they really had Lyme Disease ... Lyme is named after them ... Also, keep in mind that Lyme should be ruled out before treating for RA because the RA steroids will make Lyme significantly worse and harder to treat if it's what you really have.

I have days that I limp from the severe joint pain in my knee and hip. Granted, I'm older than you, but 44 is still too young for this. I can say, I am SO glad I'm getting better so that I can enjoy all that motherhood has to offer!

Joint pain is also a common symptom of celiac disease and candida overgrowth and many systemic illnesses. It truly scares me that your doctor thinks it's so uncommon for a young person to have it.

Thanks Carla,

I have been checking out the links you gave me. RA has been ruled out. I had a battery of tests done last year for such things as RA, Crohns, etc. so that's how my doctor came up with Psoriatic Arthritis although I have extremely mild psoriasis so it makes me wonder. What ever I have though is definitely auto immune.

Isn't crazy how we have to demand tests to be done us? The doctors seem to think they know our bodies better than we do. Thank God for the internet!

Christine, if it weren't for the internet, I'd have one foot in the grave, maybe two!!!

Even in the face of a positive, highly positive Lyme test, my doctor INSISTED that I had Somatization Disorder. Ugh.

I've had problems with rashes that look like blisters, mainly on my scalp and some on my face near my scalp ... but they've all gone away now. I had them for years ... I thought they might be DH, but clearly they weren't!!!

Good luck on your search, keep me posted, okay?

Some interesting articles regarding the use of Zinc Carnosine to help heal gastric ulcers, gastritis and intestinal permeability. I would consult a medical professional about it's use. https://www.nature.com/articles/ncpgasthep0778 https://www.rupahealth.com/post/clinical-applications-of-zinc-carnosine---evidence-review https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7146259/ https://www.fallbrookmedicalcenter.com/zinc-l-carnosine-benefits-dosage-and-safety/

He is. Which makes everything even more difficult. I’m not a believer in “staying for the kids” but I have nowhere to go and it’s not just me, it’s me plus my babies. We live in a beautiful place, lots of land in the country and me and the kids love the place we’ve called home for their entire lives. But Im seeing that he’ll never change, that my kids deserve a happy healthy Momma, and that staying in this as is will be the early death of me. Then I look at the scars covering my entire body…this disease and the chronic stress I’ve been enduring for years that tell me I’m no longer beautiful and no one will ever look at me with interest again. I try self care, try to give myself grace so I can just start loving myself enough to gain strength but the slightest sparkle in my eye and skip in my step attracts his wrath and it all comes crashing ten fold. Life is just absolutely railing me from every single direction leaving me wanting to wave that white flag bc I don’t feel like there’s much hope no matter what happens.

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with Celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis after years of suffering without answers. I lost my mind. I lost my job. I lost so much time. I lost Me. Conventional doctors are opulent come near me and the one who did sat across the room, misdiagnosed me, pumped me full of steroids which collapsed my entire hip for 6 months. So without answers I began my holistic journey. Fast forward a couple of years and still struggling with a mysterious whole body itchy, crawling “skin hell”, perfect teeth now deteriorating, thick hair now thinning rapidly and no more than a day or 2 at most relief….An acquaintance opened up a functional medicine practice. Cash only, I found a way. Within a month tests clearly showing my off the charts gluten allergy/sensitivity as well as the depletion of vital nutrients due to leaky gut and intestinal damage. dermatitis herpetiformis was more than likely what I was experiencing with my skin. I was happy. I thought this is easy, eat healthy Whole Foods, follow the diet restrictions and I finally get to heal and feel confident and like myself again very soon! 😔 Supplements are very pricey but I got them and began my healing. Which leads to the other major issue: not working, stay at home Mom of young kids, entirely financially dependent on my man of 7 plus years. He’s never been supportive of anything I’ve ever done or been thru. He controls everything. I’m not given much money ever at a time and when he does leave money it’s only enough to possibly get gas. His excuse is that I’ll spend it on other things. So my “allowance” is inconsistent and has conditions. He withholds money from me as punishment for anything he wants. Since being diagnosed, he’s gained a new control tactic to use as punishment. He now is in control of when I get to eat. He asked for proof of my diagnosis and diet bc he said I made it up just to be able to eat expensive organic foods. Then after I sent him my file from my doctor he then said she wasn’t a real doctor. 😡. I go days upon days starving, sometimes breaking down and eating things I shouldn’t bc I’m so sick then I pay horribly while he gets annoyed and angry bc I’m not keeping up with all the duties I’m supposed to be doing. His abuse turns full on when I’m down and it’s in these desperate times when I need his support and care the most that I’m punished with silence, being starved, ignored, belittled. He will create more of a mess just bc I’m unable to get up and clean so that when I am better, I’m so overwhelmed with chores to catch up that the stress causes me to go right back into a flare from hell and the cycle repeats. I’m punished for being sick. I’m belittled for starving and asking for healthy clean water. I’m purposely left out of his life. He won’t even tell me he’s going to the grocery or to get dinner bc he doesn’t want me to ask him for anything. I have no one. I have nothing. Im not better. My supplements ran out and I desperately need Vitamin D3 and a methylated B complex at the very minimal just to function….he stares at me blankly…no, a slight smirk, no words. He’s happiest when im miserable and I am miserable.  this is so long and im condensing as much as I can but this situation is so complicated and disgusting. And it’s currently my life. The “IT” girl, the healthy, beautiful, perfect skin, perfect teeth, thick and curly locks for days, creative and talented IT girl….now I won’t even leave this house bc Im ashamed of what this has dont to my body, my skin. Im disgusted. The stress is keeping me from healing and I think he knows that and that’s why he continues to keep me in that state. He doesn’t want me confident or successful. He doesn’t want me healed and healthy bc then how would he put the blame of all his problems on me? This journey has been hell and I’ve been in Hell before. I’ve been killed by an ex, I’ve been raped, robbed, held hostage, abused beyond nightmares but the cruelty I’ve experienced from him bc of this disease is the coldest I’ve ever experienced. I’ve wanted to give up. Starving and in tears, desperate…I found a local food pantry in our small town so I reached out just saying I had Celiac and was on hard times. This woman is blessing me daily with prepared gluten free meals, donations, educational info, people who know this disease and how they manage life and the blessings just keep coming. But it’s overwhelming and I feel like I don’t deserve it at all. He just glared and I know he’s going to sabotage it somehow. I don’t even know what to do anymore. I’m so broken and just want peace and healing.

@Colleen H   I am just curious,  when you were tested for coeliac disease, did the doctors find out if you had any deficiencies? Sometimes muscle pain can be caused by certain deficiencies, for example, magnesium, vitamin D, calcium, and potassium.   Might be worth looking into having some more tests.  Pins and needles can be neuropathy, again caused by deficiencies, such as iron and B12,  which can be reversed if these deficiencies are addressed. In the UK where I live we are usually only tested for iron, B12 and vitamin D deficiencies at diagnosis.   I was very iron anemic and supplementation made a big difference.  B12 was low normal, but in other countries the UK's low normal would be considered a deficiency.  My vitamin D was low normal, and I've been supplementing ever since (when I remember to take it!) My pins and needles definitely started to improve when my known deficiencies were addressed.  My nutritionist also gave me a broad spectrum supplement which really helped, because I suspect I wasn't just deficient in what I mention above but in many other vitamins and minerals.  But a word of warning, don't take iron unless blood tests reveal you actually need it, and if you are taking it your levels must be regularly monitored because too much can make you ill.  (And if you are currently taking iron, that might actually be making your stomach sore - it did mine, so my GP changed my iron supplementation to a gentler form, ferrous gluconate). Lastly, have you been trying to take anything to lessen the pain in your gut?  I get a sore stomach periodically, usually when I've had too much rich food, or when I have had to take an aspirin or certain antibiotics, or after glutening.  When this happens, I take for just a few days a small daily dose of OTC omeprazole.  I also follow a reflux or gastritis diet. There are lots online but the common denominators to these diets is you need to cut out caffeine, alcohol, rich, spicy, acidic food etc and eat small regularly spaced meals.   When I get a sore stomach, I also find it helpful to drink lots of water.  I also find hot water with a few slices of ginger very soothing to sip, or camomile tea.  A wedge pillow at night is good for reflux. Also,  best not to eat a meal 2-3 hours before going to bed. If the stomach pain is getting worse, though, it would be wise to see the doctor again. I hope some of this helps. Cristiana
