Please let us know how things go, I don't think anyone meant to be harsh. There are a number of people here, myself included who are worried about you.

Thank you for putting things into words better than I did. Yes, I certainly wrote my post out of concern for num1habsfan.

num1habsfan, I did not say that you ARE a flake, I said that you end up LOOKING like a flake if you don't even return the phone call of the concerned doctor. You also did not originally post that they knew you were coming on Monday, so from my perspective, it looked like you were blowing him off. And, as ravenwoodglass said, if you do have something contagious like hepatitis, you could find yourself being blamed--and possibly expelled or even sued-- by the college for spreading it to others if you disregarded medical advice to go back to the doctor ASAP.

Alison, I don't know what you are trying to achieve by your harsh comments and name calling. Motivations possibly. I found it extremely harsh toward a young person with concerns and in distress.

Momma Goose, I did not intend to be harsh, but realistic (no sugar-coating), and I did no name-calling. As I stated above, I did not call num1habsfan any names, I pointed out how a specific act-- disregarding his urgent medical advice--makes her look to the doctor who gave her that advice . I have no clue what you mean by motivations, as I have never met num1habsfan.

However, I constantly find myself wondering what YOUR motivations are. For whatever reason, it seems that my posts just rub you the wrong way. While I am sorry about this, it doesn't seem like there is anything I can do about it except respectfully request that you accept that I call things as I see them, without any intent whatsoever to be harsh. This might not be something that is helpful from your perspective, but it certainly is to some people, and it's the kind of help that I would offer my own children and would want for myself. There are many different ways of offering help and support. If num1habsfan does not like the kind of help I offer, she doesn't have to follow my advice. If YOU don't like the kind of help and support I offer, you can offer what you think is best. I don't criticize your point of view; please have the same respect for mine.

Your constant inclination to misinterpret my motivations and then scold me for it is very upsetting to me.

I would appreciate it if you would stop jumping on me every time I see things differently and react to things differently than you do.

i'm not even sure what the bloodwork did, or what anything showed. They wouldnt explain anything to me. And if I understood anything about medical records I would have just read it myself.

It wasn't this guy who told me to wait for the stool sample, he wanted it done as soon as possible. It was one of the previous times at home that I was told to wait until after my period is done (because of testing for bacteria..not sure how it affects it, but it does).

I'm a little concerned about this statement. You're saying that on a previous, unrelated doctor visit, advice was given that you are adhering to unneccessarily now, without consulting your current doctor? Sometimes, you just have to demand that your doctor tell you everything he's doing, and why. You are entitled to that information. If you really can't remember all this stuff, buy one of those little recorder thingy's journalists use and bring it to every doctor appointment for the rest of your life. The poeple on this board can't do it for you, all we can do is type. (and snipe at, and misunderstand, each other unneccessarily)

First of all, I haven't been on in a while, but I read your whole ordeal and I really hope things are alright for you. I hope you start feeling better soon and that you find a doctor who works with you. I have been there - during exam week - with appendicitis. No sympathy from the professors, just make sure not to neglect your own body because the grades aren't nearly as important as your life, and we all want you to get better! You've been very strong and I'm in admiration of your stability through this. Feel better soon!

Second, I think personal disputes should be resolved in private messages, this topic is about Lisa's mystery illness.

Fiddle-Faddle, I know you didn't mean to call me a liar or a fake or whatever that could have sounded like. I know you were just looking at it from another point of view..

I guess I haven't made myself clear enough. I have had to give identical stool sample for the same testing, twice, this year. Same instructions and everything. There was the rules to even not eat anything red. They have to make sure that if anything does show up it's not related to the foods you eat or the period.

Thank you...I have had my moments in this last week and half when I don't feel all that strong, but I do realize a lotof people wouldn't still try to live life normally. Also thank you for saying any issues between members should be said personally instead of in here. No offense guys, but when I saw there was new replies I was hoping it was more advice or support, not arguing.

Ohhh.... So then they must be looking for blood in the stool? Sounds like a wierd thing to be looking for when you're trying to investgate white poo, but whatever. Can't they just take a sample from you (not to be graphic or anything) like with a gloved finger? They did that to me once, that would eclipse the need to worry about period blood anyway. I still think you should get a little tape recorder for your visits.

That's the rule when testing for a bacterial infection, also. He just wants to rule those things out so that to have proof that it's something else, and making sure he doesn't assume something extreme and rule out something simple. The problem is I haven't gone in 2 days. May have to just eat some dairy to make myself go by tomorrow

OK i'm just at the school. Handed in my final and having a coffee to give me some energy (since I slept very poorly) and then I'm gonna call to the clinic to make sure the doctor is there and then call a cab. I would hate to waste $15 or so and go there if he's unavailable. Keep you updated...

I really hope the doctor is there and you get your answers. I'm sure the past couple weeks have been draining for you.

Let us know how you make out.

Just checking in to see how you are doing--please let us know (if you have the energy)! I hope they finally have some answers for you.

Thank you...I called and he's there until 6. I had my coffee and let the Tim Horton's kick in. Now i'm just making my approx 1/2 hour wait for a taxi to show up at the university. Got to love city life (NOT). If I can pick up wireless internet while I'm there I'll keep posting on the board, if not then I'll just make a log for myself in OneNote and post it onto the board when I do get into wireless. Something gives me the feeling that this may turn out to be another super long day!!

We will be thinking of you. Let us know how things went when you can. Glad he is going to be able to see you.

If you get delayed in traffic, be sure to call the clinic and let them know that you are on the way!! He might stay longer if he knows you are making an effort to see him.

Good luck!

num1habsfan Rising Star

OK so I finished there sooner than I should have....

He told me don't worry about the heart/ECG thing because he had me do another one today and said things look a lot better...

He asked what happened at ER and was quite pissed too when I told him they refused to see me, I didnt see anyone until 2 am, and they wouldn't listen to anything I said. He said "did you show them the name on the envelope?" I told him yes. But they still refused. All he really commented on that was shaking his head...

I said I'm not feeling any better, still having the HORRIBLE nausea and can't eat...

I went to give my stool samples and she said they gave me the wrong container!! So somehow I have to get another back there by friday afternoon (because thats when I leave home for xmas)...

Umm so he said he's gone for first 3 weeks of January, back January 23rd. He said come back then. If he sends me to a specialist any sooner (for my luck its the same damn idiot who refused to help me twice before, both for celiac/crohn's!!) I will be waiting months to get in. By that time he should have all of my test results back and can then send me to the specialist. Told me that's the only way I can get in to him almost immediately and if he tried that right now before xmas there would be a lot of angry people...

I'm soooo just...frustrated and sad and angry and.......1000 emotions at once I think. By the time 1.5 months passes there will be nothing left of me. Not saying that I can't afford to lose weight, since i'm normal, but I really DONT want to!!! :(:(:(

Yeah, what she said :(

Lisa, I just don't understand these doctors--why did he say he wanted to see you back if this was all the appointment was going to be about? Did you ask him about that?

I don't blame you for being frustrated--I'm frustrated for you.

I think it was mainly to re-check my heart and to find out how things went the time after the last time i seen him and if I was feeling better. I wish he WASN'T going to be gone for 3 weeks starting new year. Then i wouldnt have to starve/suffer for so long. My usual suffering is more than enough as it is :(

Oh I see, it sounded like it may have been something more. I know it's going to be hard to stick it out for another few weeks. It just is not right.

Will it at least be easier for you at home over the holidays, or is your family still giving you a hard time?

Meh family is still the same basically, definitely still get the insult thing from them...

My question is: HOW to a manage to eat anything for xmas?? It's not gonna be at my house...

Welcome to the forum, @Judy M! Yes, he definitely needs to continue eating gluten until the day of the endoscopy. Not sure why the GI doc advised otherwise but it was a bum steer.  Celiac disease has a genetic component but also an "epigenetic" component. Let me explain. There are two main genes that have been identified as providing the "potential" to develop "active" celiac disease. We know them as HLA-DQ 2.5 (aka, HLA-DQ 2) and HLA-DQ8. Without one or both of these genes it is highly unlikely that a person will develop celiac disease at some point in their life. About 40% of the general population carry one or both of these two genes but only about 1% of the population develops active celiac disease. Thus, possessing the genetic potential for celiac disease is far less than deterministic. Most who have the potential never develop the disease. In order for the potential to develop celiac disease to turn into active celiac disease, some triggering stress event or events must "turn on" the latent genes. This triggering stress event can be a viral infection, some other medical event, or even prolonged psychological/emotional trauma. This part of the equation is difficult to quantify but this is the epigenetic dimension of the disease. Epigenetics has to do with the influence that environmental factors and things not coded into the DNA itself have to do in "turning on" susceptible genes. And this is why celiac disease can develop at any stage of life. Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition (not a food allergy) that causes inflammation in the lining of the small bowel. The ingestion of gluten causes the body to attack the cells of this lining which, over time, damages and destroys them, impairing the body's ability to absorb nutrients since this is the part of the intestinal track responsible for nutrient absorption and also causing numerous other food sensitivities such as dairy/lactose intolerance. There is another gluten-related disorder known as NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or just, "gluten sensitivity") that is not autoimmune in nature and which does not damage the small bowel lining. However, NCGS shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease such as gas, bloating, and diarrhea. It is also much more common than celiac disease. There is no test for NCGS so, because they share common symptoms, celiac disease must first be ruled out through formal testing for celiac disease. This is where your husband is right now. It should also be said that some experts believe NCGS can transition into celiac disease. I hope this helps.

My husband has had lactose intolerance for his entire life (he's 68 yo).  So, he's used to gastro issues. But for the past year he's been experiencing bouts of diarrhea that last for hours.  He finally went to his gastroenterologist ... several blood tests ruled out other maladies, but his celiac results are suspect.  He is scheduled for an endoscopy and colonoscopy in 2 weeks.  He was told to eat "gluten free" until the tests!!!  I, and he know nothing about this "diet" much less how to navigate his in daily life!! The more I read, the more my head is spinning.  So I guess I have 2 questions.  First, I read on this website that prior to testing, eat gluten so as not to compromise the testing!  Is that true? His primary care doctor told him to eat gluten free prior to testing!  I'm so confused.  Second, I read that celiac disease is genetic or caused by other ways such as surgery.  No family history but Gall bladder removal 7 years ago, maybe?  But how in God's name does something like this crop up and now is so awful he can't go a day without worrying.  He still works in Manhattan and considers himself lucky if he gets there without incident!  Advice from those who know would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!

You've done an excellent job of meticulously tracking the rash's unpredictable behavior, from its symmetrical spread and stubborn scabbing to the potential triggers you've identified, like the asthma medication and dietary changes. It's particularly telling that the rash seems to flare with wheat consumption, even though your initial blood test was negative—as you've noted, being off wheat before a test can sometimes lead to a false negative, and your description of the other symptoms—joint pain, brain fog, stomach issues—is very compelling. The symmetry of the rash is a crucial detail that often points toward an internal cause, such as an autoimmune response or a systemic reaction, rather than just an external irritant like a plant or mites. I hope your doctor tomorrow takes the time to listen carefully to all of this evidence you've gathered and works with you to find some real answers and effective relief. Don't be discouraged if the rash fluctuates; your detailed history is the most valuable tool you have for getting an accurate diagnosis.

In this case the beer is excellent, but for those who are super sensitive it is likely better to go the full gluten-free beer route. Lakefront Brewery (another sponsor!) has good gluten-free beer made without any gluten ingredients.

Welcome to the forum, @catsrlife! Celiac disease can be diagnosed without committing to a full-blown "gluten challenge" if you get a skin biopsy done during an active outbreak of dermatitis herpetiformis, assuming that is what is causing the rash. There is no other known cause for dermatitis herpetiformis so it is definitive for celiac disease. You would need to find a dermatologist who is familiar with doing the biopsy correctly, however. The samples need to be taken next to the pustules, not on them . . . a mistake many dermatologists make when biopsying for dermatitis herpetiformis.
