Anyone Else With Problems With Maybelline Eyeliner?

Has anyone else noticed a sensitivity to Maybelline solid eyeliner? I had used it for years without any reaction. About a month or so ago, my lids started feeling itchy and like there was grit near my lid lines. I thought it was from not removing the makeup at bedtime ;) ....so I got better about taking it off with plain Vaseline. It did not help, so I went bare(not a pretty sight......a co-worker asked me if I was tired!!) After the itch/grit went away, I bought some pricey liner(I sure missed the $5 variety) and the itch stayed away. I thought after a few weeks, I'd retry the Maybelline today and within a half hour the itch/grit came back. Off it went again. I doubt I;ll retry, but I was curious if anyone else has had a similar reaction.

AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE !!!!!!!

Hey mamabear,

Happy New Year to You!

I can't vouch for the eye liner, but I believe that the mascara contains gluten.

I have reactions like that to a lot of pencil eyeliners.

You should check out the Everyday Minerals thread :D

Everyday Minerals has eyeliners you can order for $2.50. It's all natural stuff (just a few ingredients), and doesn't seem to irritate anybody's eyes. It comes in a little pot of powder though....but it's easy to apply and stays on all day.

Your story is so close to my own recent experience! I used Maybelline eyeliner forever, then about two months ago, I began to have an allergic reaction to it. Of course, it took me awhile to figure out, as I had been using it for so long. I now use Almay, which I confirmed was gluten free. My eyes got puffy and itchy and red. It was awful. I hate it when formulas change and we have to suffer.

Did you speak with Almay on the phone? I just spoke with them yesterday, regarding makeup remover pads and eyeliner and they said they could not guarantee it was gluten free.

I don't know about gluten in Maybelline, but many years ago I decided to save money and switch from Revlon to Maybelline mascara; ouch!! that was a disaster. For a couple of years after that I could not wear any mascara, even

the Revlon. Eventually tried Physicians Formula and that was okay. I am not even sure what I'm using now, but it could well be Almay, and have had no problem with it gluten or no. I will never touch another Maybelline product..

I wear the expensive pencil eyeliners from Benefit and the cheap ones from Prestige (made in Germany). I use Cover Girl mascara, but I have to make sure to get the formula with shellac and not wheat protein. I get them when they go on sale 2 for one.

What are your daily meals? Guilty pleasure snacks? Protein bars? I feel when looking for gluten free foods they are filled with sugar cholesterol. Looking for healthy gluten-free protein bars. Something to fill since sometimes I feel like not to eat anything. Especially if on vacation and unsure of cross contamination I figure go with a salad and protein bar to fill and play it safe.

Unfortunately, there is presently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. NCGS is thought to be much more common than celiac disease. We know that celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder but the mechanism of NCGS is less clear. Both call for an elimination of gluten from the diet.

Thanks for your reply Trents…most appreciated.  I am unfamiliar with celiac labs terminology so I wanted to know if the presence of HLA variants (DA:101, DA:105, DQB1:0301 and DQB1:0501) that the labs detected had any merit in predisposing one to be more sensitive to gluten/carbs than the general population?  Also,  I found what you said about NCGS very interesting and I appreciate you mentioning that.  I’ve worked hard to research and advocate for myself with my Hematologist and now with a new GI, since my bowel surgery and to maintain my Vitamin B12 health concurrent with keeping my levels of Iron in the optimal range. I’ve been tested for SIBO (do not have it), biopsy showed negative for HPylori, and have had Fecal studies done (nothing showed up) and I understand how a loss of a large amount of bowel could be highly impacting re: SIBO, malabsorption and motility issues. So I’ve managed pretty well diet and elimination-wise until just recently. That said, this new problem with extreme bloating, distention and upper girth, NAFLD just occured over the last 4 months so it is new for me and I thought celiac might be a possible issue. I’ll probably just continue on in this less gluten/carbs seem to be better for me and see how reintroducing certain foods go.  Thanks again.

Thanks bumped it up and now take all 3 vitamins 2 capsules each with the super b complex at breakfast. I will give it some time to see if I notice a difference. I am going to track my eating daily diary on a myfitness pal app to see if the "claimed" gluten free foods bother me or not.

Please can anyone help. I was diagnosed on 23rd December and I am trying my best to get my head around all the things to look out for. I have read that yeast extract is not to be eaten by coeliacs. Why? And is this all yeast extract. Or is this information wrong. Thanks.
