Having a bad hair day here...need to know what shampoo folks are using, is it gluten free and do you like it?

I have the same question, right now I am using sunsilk extra body shampoo and conditioner, I am still losing hair, but not nearly as much as I was when I was using Tresseme...

I use ShiKai's shampoo and conditioner, and am quite happy with it. Definitely need the conditioner in the winter, though. :)

jerseyangel Proficient

I also like ShiKai very much. I've used the Everyday Shampoo and Conditioner.

Dove is good, and will list any gluten on the label. I'm currently using Desert Essence.

Garnier has many gluten-free products--their Long and Strong Shampoo and Conditioner are gluten-free.

I am using the Dove pro-age products (for people over 50) and love them.

My youngest daughter uses Dove as well, and did by choice before knowing about being gluten intolerant, because their shampoos, conditioners and gels are great. The same goes for the soap.

I just started using Burt's Bees shampoo and conditioner (the grapefruit scented one). I really like it.

Some scents have wheat protein, so check the label.

I use Ecover dish soap for shampoo, and Nature's gate conditioner. I'm cheap. But it works really good! My hair is so manageable now. And shiny. But I have lots of fine, light, long, fluffy hair. Might not work for different types of hair.

I think it does too, But thats why I was asking what other people used, I am def. not going to go out and buy anymore shampoos and conditioners till i know for sure it has no gluten, and since my hair isnt falling out too bad, i figure ill use it till i get a brand, And thanks to all of you on here, I can finally go out and get some gluten-free shampoos!!!!!

I am new to the whole label reading thing, and sometimes Ill see something, and think its okay, but then find out its not.....

Thanks!!!!

Read the label because I know I ended up giving mine away after checking the label. I know the Neutrogena clean shampoo is gluten-free but wanted a change. I did go and buy the Garnier Long and Strong and am having a good hair day today :D (thanks jerseyangel) L.A.

I use Pantene. Never had a problem with it. I can't do most of the "natural" or "organic" hair care products on the market because everyone seems to want to put sunflower oil in them. Whatever. If it's isn't one thing it's another.

I dont remember which thread it was on, but I want to thank the person who told me about everyday minerals, I got my free samples in yesterday, and am wearing them today, which is a great pick me up, since I have been down the past 2 days. I love how light weight the makeup is, it looks flawless! Thank You!!

Isn't that stuff great? I like it too. I don't usually wear makeup, but I need good stuff for the rare occasion when I do, so I got some of their stuff and I love it. I wish they made mascara. But if you're feeling the pocketbook pinch for shampoos, the Ecover dish soap idea might work for you, because its so much cheaper than shampoo. It's expensive for dish soap, but awful cheap for shampoo. And if you hate it for your hair, at least you can use it for something else instead of having to give it away. It works for shampoo because it's a lot more liquidy than normal dish soap, it pours like water instead of goo. It's very gentle. Doesn't last as long as normal dish soap for washing dishes though, it dissolves fatser and you have to use more. It also smells a lot gentler, I'm so tired of shampoo that makes me sneeze.

hi,

I was just diagnosed in december.... at the time my scalp was a mess (now I know why). I just switched to Dove and my hair and scalp are really healing.

Good luck with your search!

I also had noticable hair loss before gluten-free and after a few months began using lotions and shampoos that do not have wheat. It made a dramatic difference with my skin, scalp and hair problems.

I recommend Pureology zerosulfate purifyshampoo (pale green bottle) expensive but you use a very small amount so it lasts. It has tea tree oil in it also. Check carefully because not all of the pureolgy products are wheat free.

Neutrogena Clean Replenishing shampoo and conditioner are also great.

What ingredients in make up and shampoo have gluten in them? Obviously wheat. But can it be hidden in other ingredients?

This is a very common question, and the most important thing to know is that no, Guinness is not considered safe for individuals with coeliac disease. While it's fascinating to hear anecdotes from other coeliacs who can drink it without immediate issues, this is a risky exception rather than the rule. The core issue is that Guinness is brewed from barley, which contains gluten, and the standard brewing process does not remove the gluten protein to a level safe for coeliacs (below 20ppm). For someone like you who experiences dermatitis herpetiformis, the reaction is particularly significant. DH is triggered by gluten ingestion, even without immediate gastrointestinal symptoms. So, while you may not feel an instant stomach upset, drinking a gluten-containing beer like Guinness could very well provoke a flare-up of your skin condition days later. It would be a gamble with a potentially uncomfortable and long-lasting consequence. Fortunately, there are excellent, certified gluten-free stouts available now that can provide a safe and satisfying alternative without the risk.

Interestingly, this thought occurred to me last night. I did find that there are studies investigating whether vitamin D deficiency can actually trigger celiac disease.  Source: National Institutes of Health https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7231074/

Before being diagnosed coeliac I used to love Guinness. Being made from barley it should be something a coeliac shouldn’t drink. But taking to another coeliac and they can drink it with no ill effects and have heard of others who can drink it too.  is this everyone’s experience?  Can I drink it?  I get dermatitis herpetiformis and don’t get instant reactions to gluten so can’t try it to see for myself.

NCGS does not cause damage to the small bowel villi so, if indeed you were not skimping on gluten when you had the antibody blood testing done, it is likely you have celiac disease.
    • Scott Adams
I will assume you did the gluten challenge properly and were eating a lot of gluten daily for 6-8 weeks before your test, but if not, that could be the issue. You can still have celiac disease with negative blood test results, although it's not as common:  Clinical and genetic profile of patients with seronegative coeliac disease: the natural history and response to gluten-free diet: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5606118/  Seronegative Celiac Disease - A Challenging Case: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9441776/  Enteropathies with villous atrophy but negative coeliac serology in adults: current issues: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34764141/  Approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.
