Help, I am again losing large amounts of hair. My hair loss seemed to improve after iron infusions, and my iron is now normal. I again started losing hair. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Thanks, I am very upset.

Have you ever had your thyroid levels checked?

hayley3 Contributor

Have you had your vitamin D checked?

My hair was really coming out. I had to buy a hair catcher for the shower because so much of it was coming out. Even after the shower I would pull out big clumps.

Yesterday it seemed like there was less in the hair catcher. I'm hopeful.

My thyroid was also bad but it has started improving too and I'm assuming it is better because of the diet or the Vit D, or both.

I don't know if this will apply for you but thought I would mention it.

I have had a horrible time with fallout since I had diverticulitis followed by antibiotic allergy induced pancreatitis last spring. I know being really sick can effect the hair but usually it would start to grow back after a couple months. Mine just kept falling out. I also started to react with an itchy scalp again even with shampoo that I knew was gluten free. In my case it turned out to be soy. I don't know whether being so sick triggered the new allergy/intolerance but once I eliminated soy in my hair care products my hair started growing back. I really miss my Giovanni shampoo and conditioner

I started having that problem a year ago and I started taking 5000 mcg Biotin a day and my hair and nails are doing awesome B)

Good luck!

Thanks for the tip. I will try ANYTHING! :)

When my hair started falling out I was so scared. But after going gluten free I got a lot better. I also researched that a deficiency in calcium can cause your hair to fall out. After I started eating things with more calcium in it like yogurt and black sesame seeds my hair stopped falling out and became really healthy and soft. Hope this helps and that you get better soon!

I've been also having alot of hair loss, and have low ferritin...but I also have adrenal fatigue and hypothyroid which is a major cause of hair loss so might be something to check into.

My hair was falling out all over the place. I was fed up with that so decided to give myself a boost by taking some good multivits. I also wanted to boost my liver as poor liver function can affect hair, so I have been taking Milk Thistle capsules. Result. My hair has stopped falling out and looks a lot better too.

I hope you manage to find something that works for you.

I thought maybe I had found the "key" to my hair loss when I tested positive for gliadin antibodies and researched it's connection to hair loss. Within 24 hours of going gluten-free my skin changed completely i.e. texture and moisture and I lost the inflammation(thankfully). After 10 days I had no pimples, whatsoever for the first time in 3 years! I'm 38...

My hair also got very very soft and baby fine right away... I've had hair loss issues for 3 years going from a full, thick head of what I now consider glorious curls :) to my grandmother's whispy, thin and balding fuzz. I have thyroid issues as well... in fact the hair loss started immediately after radiation of thyroid and has never recovered. I'm on 4 grains Armour and 20 mcg T3. BUT, I've developed these strange allergies to environmental chemicals since then and I just can't get a finger on the one thing or things that are causing this...

When I went gluten-free (2 weeks ago), I started losing even more hair, more quickly, but it's soft and shiny now... I even changed to gluten-free shampoo and now it's so soft I can't manage it and have to wear it in a small bun.

Can going gluten-free cause a shedding that could be the storm before the regrowth?? Gosh, I hope so... I'm exhausted with my ever-changing system.

Celiac disease is the most likely cause, but here are articles about the other possible causes:

Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Atl222! Yes, your increased lymphocytes could be in response to oats or it could possibly be cross contamination from gluten that is getting into your diet from some unexpected source but not enough to damage the villi. And I'm certain that increased lymphocytes can be caused by other things besides celiac disease or gluten/oats exposure. See attachment. But you might try eliminating oats to start with and possibly dairy for a few months and then seek another endoscopy/biopsy to see if there was a reduction in lymphocyte counts.

This is a solid, well-reasoned approach. You’re right that “koji” by itself doesn’t indicate gluten status, and the risk really does come down to which grain is used to culture it. The fact that you directly contacted Eden Foods and received a clear statement that their koji is made from rice only, with no wheat or barley, is meaningful due diligence—especially since Eden has a long-standing reputation for transparency. While the lack of gluten labeling can understandably give pause, manufacturer confirmation like this is often what people rely on for traditionally fermented products. As always, trusting your body after trying it is reasonable, but based on the information you gathered, your conclusion makes sense.
