Gluten-free Beer

My husband just got his official gluten intolerant diagnosis, so now there are three of us...DS is celiac, and DD chooses to believe her negative blood panel and continue to eat pizza and burgers--for now.

I have never been a real beer drinker, so I didn't bother to search out gluten-free beer when I was diagnosed. However, my husband really enjoys a beer after work, so I'm on the search. We have found La Messegere, available in Quebec, so my husband headed across the bridge and brought some home. It's passable. Does anyone know of any other gluten-free beer available in Ontario or Quebec (or even Northern NY)?

There was a thread on here a while back about Redbridge... gotta say it's pretty good. Made by Anheiser Busch. And you can find it at WalMart if you have one close by.

Emily,

Can you get Redbridge? I'm sure it's available in northern NY, don't know about Canada. It's really good--I'm not an expert on beer by any means, but I liked it :)

I don't know if it's available there (I'm not there :) ), but I like Bard's Tale.

Ditto the Redbridge recommendation. I'm drinking one right now and it is pretty good. It reminds me of Sam Addams.

I brought home Red Bridge beer one day even though I have never liked beer. My gluten eating husband liked it enough to drink it in place of his Bohemia until the six pack was gone.

La Messegere is available in Ontario at selected Open Original Shared Link outlets. You can find the stores that carry it be using the the search function on the site linked to just above. If yours does not carry it, they can order it for you. It retails in a six-pack, but the distribution unit to the store is a case of four six-packs. Last time I did the research, there was no other gluten-free beer to be found in Ontario. For me, travel to New York state is two hours each way on a good day--longer if there is a backlog at the border. I went beer-free for many years until the arrival of La Messegere, so I had plenty of time to forget what real beer tasted like. It's certainly not Guiness. ;)

Have you considered cider as an alternative? I was a beer drinker too, and I"m learning to like cider. Magners Irish Cider is gluten-free and not bad. There's also Strongbow and Woodchuck, though I've never tried them. You can get Magners and Strongbow in LCBO. Never looked for Woodchuck, so I'm not sure if they have it.

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—

@GlorietaKaro, your respiratory reactions to gluten make me wonder if there might also be an allergic (anaphylaxis) component at work here.

Thanks to both of you for your responses!  Sadly, even after several years of very strict gluten avoidance, I remember the symptoms well enough that I am too frightened to risk a gluten challenge— heartbeat and breathing problems are scary— Scott, thank you for the specific information— I will call around in the new year to see if I can find anyone. In the meantime, I will carry on has I have been— it’s working! Thanks also for the validation— sometimes I just feel crushed by disbelief. Not enough to make me eat gluten though—
