Stomach Virus I Just Can't Shake

Last weekend was show weekend for Pride and Prejudice at school, and the guy who played Mr. Darcy got really sick on show night :o fortunately he was OK on stage. But seeing as I was Elizabeth, it was to be expected that I would get sick soon enogh :rolleyes: . So Saturday rolls around, and sure enough my stomach's upset. Since then, I have had D (not celiac-related though), a little bit of vomiting, headaches, achiness, and no energy (sleeping about 12-15 hours, neglecting homework...). I figured it was just a virus, but unfortunately, it's only getting worse and it's been five days. I can actually keep down solid food ok, and I've been eating mostly carbohydrates as this is easiest on my stomach. What worries me is that I can't drink anything or it comes back up. So I know at this point I'm probably dehydrated. I have tried water, tea, juice, and ginger ale, and I can't tolerate any of it, even if I drink it really slowly. I know I should probably see a doctor, but won't get a chance to until Monday...until then, any thoughts/help? Thanks! I have the hardest time shaking off even little bugs <_<

How dehydrated are you? Lift the skin on your hand by pinching it between your fingers. If it stays in the pinched position for a noticable amount of time please do not wait until next week to see a doctor. Call your doctor today, there are things he can give you to ease the vomiting. A week is a long time to still be vomiting, dehydration can be serious and damage you don't ignore it.

What kind of carbs are you eating??? They might be suspect.

When I have had vomiting attacks like that I found it best to avoid eating altogether until it passes. Just water and a little powdered vitamin C, assuming you can handle the corn they make the C from. Otherwise a little fresh lemon juice in the glass of water. Chamomile tea with maybe some mint has been known to help. Anise is also good.

There's nothing quite like pepto bismal to stop the vomiting. I don't know if the methylcellulose in the liquid has gluten or not but the chewable tabs just use chalk as a binder.

When you get better just start with taking a clear chicken broth, then lead up to more substantial foods slowly.

if you're staying dehydrated, and so nauseous you can't keep liquids down, you can ask your doc for meds to keep the nausea down. before that, however, I'd try drinking some tea - ginger with lemon and honey. (the carbs from the honey seem to help, and the ginger helps ease nausea.) barring that, the most liquid-y soup you can keep down.

Our whole family before had norovirus and we couldn't keep a thing in. Me and my husband were dehydrated and had horrible leg cramps. When my daughter got it I called her dr and she gave me excellent advice. She said to feed her a tablespoon of pedialyte every five minutes. After an hour if she does fine to increase it to 2 tablespoons every 10 minutes and if she threw up again to go back to the five. Basically its enough to keep her hydrated (with electrolytes) but since its such a small amount it doesnt settle in her stomach and absorbs before then. It's a pain kind of but a blessing to be able to keep her at home and out of the hospital for dehydration.

      Another annoying thing about trying to figure this Celiac life out is reading all of the labels and considering every choice. I shop at Aldi every week and have been for years. I was just officially diagnosed Celiac a couple weeks ago this October after my endoscopy. I've been encouraged by my local Aldi in that they have a lot of gluten free products and clearly labeled foods. I usually buy Milagro corn tortillas because they are cheap and are certified. However, I bought a package of Aldi's Pueblo Lindo Yellow Corn Tortillas without looking too closely (I was assuming they were fine... assuming never gets us anywhere good lol) it doesn't list any wheat products and doesn't say it was processed in a facility with wheat. It has a label that it's lactose free (hello, what?? When has dairy ever been in a tortilla?) Just, ugh. If they can add that label then why can't they just say something is gluten free or not? I did eat some of the tortillas and didn't notice any symptoms but I'm just not sure if it's safe. So I'll probably have to let my family eat them and stick with Milagro. There is way too much uncertainty with this but I guess you just have to stick with the clearly labeled products? I am still learning!

      Thank you all for sharing your experiences! And I am very thankful for that Thanksgiving article, Scott! I will look into it more as I plan my little dinner to bring with on the Holiday I'm also glad a lot of research has been done for Celiac. There's still a lot to learn and discover. And everyone has different symptoms. For me, I get a bad headache right away after eating gluten. Reoccurring migraines and visual disturbances were actually what got my PCP to order a Celiac Panel. I'm glad he did! I feel like when the inflammation hits my body it targets my head, gut, and lower back. I'm still figuring things out but that's what I've noticed after eating gluten! I have been eating gluten-free for almost two months now and haven't had such severe symptoms. I ate a couple accidents along the way but I'm doing a lot better

      @Mari, did you read that second article that Scott linked? It is the most recently date one. "Researchers comparing rates of headaches, including migraines, among celiac patients and a healthy control group showed that celiac subjects experienced higher rates of headaches than control subjects, with the greatest rates of migraines found in celiac women.  Additionally, celiacs had higher rates of migraine than control subjects, especially in women. In fact, four out of five women with celiac disease suffered from migraines, and without aura nearly three-quarters of the time."

      As far as I know and I have made severalonline searches, celiac disease disease has not been recognized as a cause of migraines or any eye problems. What I wrote must have been confusing.

      Interesting, when I suffered for a few months with ectopics I noticed that carbohydrates would cause indigestion and bloating in my stomach, then that would lead to my heart skipping beats, and I could feel it in my throat, it was very unsettling.  My last serious bout of this was after eating a Muller Rice Pudding for breakfast.   I happened to be wearing a 48 hour halter at the time and cardiology picked it up, but they weren't worried about what they saw. There was some British doctor who'd made some videos on the Vagus nerve that I remember watching at the time which made sense of what I was experiencing, there did seem to be some sort of connection.
