I was wondering if anyone out there can give me some tips for being gluten free...... I have recently been diagnosed and I am struggling with trying to figure what I can and can't eat.... I went to trader joes and bought a bunch of gluten free pasta and bread! I was just wondering what pasta sauces, salad dressings and shredded cheeses I can eat???? Also I am confused on what alcohol you can drink, I know no beer, but as for whine and vodka go I am also confused :(

Please help! :)

Welcome Molly,

Here are some links that might be helpful.

Here is some beginner information:

Here is a list of companies who will clearly list all gluten (as in wheat, barley, malt and rye):

The product section on this site has alot of gluten free information. Learning to read labels and contacting companies is the key to managing this crazy disease.

It will get easier.

List of companies that will not hide any gluten. If you don't see wheat, rye, barley, malt derived from barley, or oats, it is not "hidden" in the ingredients.

If you use these lists, it will make shopping a lot easier. You'll be able to read labels and make informed decisions.

*Pasta sauce -- Really like Classico. On their website they say that all red and white sauces are gluten free

*Pasta noodles -- Ancient Harvest is really good.

*Shredded Cheese -- WalMart says Gluten Free on the back of their cheese packaging (Great Value is their brand and they put gluten free on the back of their safe products).

*Salad Dressing -- I like Wishbone, they list gluten if present. A lot of people like Kraft as well b/c they will not hide gluten.

*If you like BBQ Sauce -- Sweet Baby Rays is good.

*Hormel has a long list on their website of gluten free items (they have pepperoni :D ).

You can also call the 800 lines on items you are not sure about or you can e-mail and ask about an item and at the same time ask if they have a gluten free list. Fast food and restaurants sometimes have lists on their websites.

You can also look at the frequently asked questions on product websites and a lot will have some kind of comment about gluten free items.

Best of luck! :)

Thanks that is very helpful to me! This is just so frustrating! I feel like I am running into walls, just when I think i have it figured out I read more about gluten and how many products that it is in!!!

I wanted to let everyone know that I emailed Delgrosso and all their pasta sauces are gluten free, not sure if their sauce is nationwide, but we have it here in Pittsburgh.........

Thanks!!! Everyone! :D

It gets easier. Im 4 months into it, and am a lot better cook than I used to be! I make my own Spaggetti sauce, taco seasonings, salad dressing and stuff like that from scratch. It really taste better and has no preservatives or unwanted ingredients.

As for booze. I drink Rum, and mix it with punch. I was a beer drinker before, but now Im a rum punch guy!

You will be safe with all the clear Rums, Tequila's, and wine.

When in doubt call the company.

Never shop without a phone. You can use it to call the number on the back of the product and ask them if it is gluten-free.

Shop at Wal-Mart and stick to the Great Value products. As for soups, Progresso, and Healthy Choice list Allergens on their labels.

I think gluten-free bread is awfull and dont mess with it. I eat lots of corn ships. Fritos are good, as are Mission brand tortilla chips.

I love to make Tacos.

Eating out? Rarely

Hormel Chili with beans, and Tamales are gluten-free. Dinty Moore Beef Stew is gluten-free, but I dont like it. I stick to Progresso soups.

If you dont already, learn to like hot sauce. It really livens up your food, and its good for you too!

All the Tobasco Varities are gluten-free.

I dont eat much store bought meat, as I am a hunter and keep a freezer full of Deer, and other game to eat. And I catch my own fish too. So that helps.

Hang in there, it does get easier, but it will always be frustrating to watch someone eat Pizza! :-)

I'm very confused... My blood test came out negative, I checked all antibodies. I suppose my Total IgA levels are normal (132 mg/dl), so the test should be reliable. Still, I'm not relieved as I can't tolerate even a single biscuit. I need to talk to my doctor about whether a duodenal biopsy is necessary. But it is really possible to have intestinal damage despite having a seronegative results? I have really strong symptoms, and I don't want to keep skipping university lectures or being bedridden at home.

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.
    • Scott Adams
In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.
    • JettaGirl
This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.
