Virus Or Glutening

My son is 8 and has been gluten free since his mid-December dx of Celiac. He had a very bad afternoon with 11 diarhea bms in a six hour period. Most were green and a lot looked like they had sand in them.

Other than having Celiac, he is also autistic and has limited communication skills so he can't really help me figure out what is going on. I'm trying to figure out what happened so I can know if he is contagious or if it his something he shouldn't have ate. (I'm really hoping he's not contagious since his 9 year old sister just got a cast on her lower leg that she needs to wear for another 3 1/2 weeks, not a good combination with a stomach bug.)

Does anyone have any tips for interpreting this type of situation? His symptoms pre-diagnosis was constipation/impaction/bloating in case that makes a difference.

Thanks,

Marsha

It appears many autistic children have their level of autism reduced when Gluten-free/C-F ...

Many of my friends can tell from my mood/level of disassociation when I'm glutened so as a mom I would think you have to go with your 'feeling'.

You might check poop but its hardly definitive ... and you might se if other children have a virus or tummy upset but other than that your mothers instincts are probably as accurate as anything that can be quickly achieved.

(If you get blood tests then chance is its over before you get results .. so its a bit of a non issue since by this time he will or will not have passed on a tummy bug.

Has the D resolved? Make sure you keep him well hydrated. Could someone have given him black licorice? That would cause allover green BM's and I still haven't found one that is gluten-free other than some brands of jelly beans. If you are seeing green in only mucousy streaks you should call your doctor. You should also call the doctor if he is pale, in quite a bit of pain, running a fever or just if you are extremely concerned. Chances are gluten snuck in somewhere and he is already feeling better. Better to err on the side of caution though if it hasn't resolved or is getting worse. I hope he feels better soon.

Thanks. Whatever it was, he seems to be doing better now. Once again no dehydration. He's the best drinker I know, he even made it through a very nasty episode with salmonella poisioning without having to get IV fluids.

I think the green bms may be associated with dairy for him. I haven't removed it yet. I was wanting to wait until summer when I can more easily control his diet but I think it needs to happen sooner. I know going gluten-free & cf is beneficial for many but I'm the type that only does one at a time.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
