First Time Eating Out

I'm going to a baby shower tomorrow. Actually, I forgot it was tomorrow until this morning when my mom called about carpooling. I would have made arrangements sooner if I had remembered.

Can I just bring salad from home to eat at the shower? When at a restaraunt, do you have to eat their food? I could call ahead to ask for a fruit plate if I need to. I'd rather be in control of my own food still.

I find that at parties most people won't notice if you're not eating. If someone does, they might just think you're not hungry... or maybe you're a picky eater!

Restaurants are a little more tricky. You could get away with just having a drink... tea, coffee, maybe a glass of wine if you drink alcohol. Calling ahead is a good idea. You could also have a solid meal before you leave home so you won't feel tempted to eat.

I think the best thing is just to feel confident about your decision. Other people don't have to live with the consequences of CC... you know what's best for your health. :)

If you are going to a place were you know there is nothing safe to eat, then i would eat before hand. Or at least take a snack with you even be it an lara bar or some nuts, depending on what you can eat.

I made myself a yummy salad, packed some snacks, and leftover gluten-free brownie in a gift bag. We were late to the shower because of a maniac on the highway, so we got a booth in the corner of the banquet room. The only two people who asked about my food were incredibly gracious. The hostess offered to take my gift bag. I told her it was food because I was having food issues lately. She is 6 months post gastric bypass so she knows food issues. My aunt stopped by to say hello and asked about my salad. When I hesitated to try to find the right words, she jumped in and asked if I was "bringing my own" and insisted that was all I needed to say.

I was really happy with my meal and I think it was better than the buffet that they had. I was hoping to use a plate from the middle of the buffet stack, but they were all smeared or crummy. I was really glad I had my own food and with the long drive and highway trouble, I might have gone hungry. I think my sister in laws would have made a fuss if I had not had anything to eat.

So, for highs and lows of the day, the food was the high point, and the torturous car ride was the low.

Thanks for the tips on eating out. I like the idea that there will be times that no one knows I'm skipping a meal at some of these events. It is good to know that can be pulled off successfully.

I'm so glad that you had a successful outing! I often do as you did and bring my own meals and by doing so get to relax and enjoy the event.

Good on you!

It is always a difficult situation when you go out with other people, especially if you don't know most people there. I usually also eat beforehand. The first time I felt a little odd, but I got used to it by now.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.

How can you be negative for HLA?   What markers did you have here? Curiouser and curiouser...
