For Dq1 And Dq3 (have Both Genes) - What Foods Are You Certain Bother You?

I am curious for those who have both DQ1 and DQ3 what your confirmed intolerances are? Looking for correlations. I am DQ1 subtype 6 and DQ3 subtype 7. I dont know if the subtypes make a difference. But if you have my exact genetic make-up, I am curious what foods bother you.

For me so far the ones I know for CERTAIN bother me:

Gluten

Legumes - beans - peanuts - soy

Citrus

Nightshades

Apples

**The above foods produce a consistent set of symptoms within 24 hours of ingestion. Some within hours.

Then there are foods that I am not 100% certain because it isnt consistent:

Most dairy - only eat 24 hour fermented goat yogurt where all of the lactose and casein is broken down

Eggs

Rice

Corn

Pork

You?

I am DQ1 subtype 6 (0604). I have DQ2 as the other (0202). I did find some info the other day that links HLA-DQB1 0604 with DQA1 0102.

As far as food intolerances go:

gluten (duh)

dairy (casein, not lactose)

maybe:

peanuts (give me a stomachache)

beans/soy (the usual problems though not pre-gluten-free and sometimes migraine)

nitrites (migraine - non-nitrite hotdogs and sausage are fine)

maybe onions (digestive blah feeling)

apples are very constipating

Thank goodness nightshades are not a problem for me.

That seems to be it. When I cut out most of the dairy, that stopped 99.9% of the remaining migraines (most left with the gluten). The only thing I am definite about excluding is gluten and most dairy.

Hi Shay.....I have DQ1 and DQ3.

I'm sensitive to everything....and I'm intolerant to nothing. :lol:

OK.....I know that doesnt sound right but its true for me. In my case I have focused more on my body's inability to break down and eliminate the natural chemicals in foods.

Even though it seems like I'm reactive to ALOT of foods...I'm actually unable to detox these chemicals efficiently...so they accumulate rapidly and cause inflammation and various symptoms.

I avoid amines, salicylates, glutamates, high sulfur foods....and of course the synthetic chemicals as well.

Its impossible for me to avoid everything 100% since all foods contain these things....but I dont eat the ones with significant amount of anything...I try to keep them from accumulating to the point that I'm having bad reactions. Its difficult to do because my threshold is very low....but I manage. :)

I dont consider my reactions to be "allergic" type reactions (although they can seem that way)....but its more of a metabolic problem...with enzymes not functioning properly and impaired detoxification.

I'm not a big fan of food intolerance testing but I have had the ELISA IgG (about 130 foods). This was quite awhile ago and all I knew at that time was that I was reactive to everything but not with any type of consistency. Sometimes I'd eat something without having any reaction....and another time the same food would cause immediate reaction. It was nothing I could figure out easily (as far as identifying specific foods)...even with the strictest of elimination diets.

Anyways my test was almost totally clean.....I had a handful of reactive foods (mostly spices + banana and alfalfa).....but all were considered to be VL (very low). I didnt have a single strong positive for any food.

Since then I found my answers by investigating the food chemicals. Alot of people have issues with them....but mine are pretty severe as far as how impaired my ability to process them is.

From what I've noticed as far as other members who have these genes....and especially DQ1....is that most have multiple food sensitivities. I know that I've had at least one thread about the genes....I do know there was one about DQ1....I think I was asking if anyone had gotten better from the gluten-free diet alone. I believe that everyone who had responded had many intolerances after gluten....and many of us had some similar issues/symptoms as well.

I cant remember exactly and dont have time to get the link right now (lunch break is about over) but you can search my topics if you're interested.

I have problems with most of the foods on your list but I look at it a bit differently.....so for my issues with citrus foods its more related to the fact that they are high in amines and most are high in salicylates as well. Apples are high in salicylates. Soy is high in several things (this is one that I avoid completely).

Anyways, you get the point and I know that you're familiar with the food chemicals already. ;)

P.S. I also do not have any true allergies. No IgE reactions whatsoever.

I dont have any "true" allergies either except a very low reaction to dust mites. Who doesnt?.....LOL

I tried a low salicylic acid diet once. The book claimed that if you didnt respond to this strict elimination diet, that food wasnt your problem. I didnt feel any different on it.

I have done ELISA off and on over the years and finally decided they were worthless.

Im always curious about others......

I checked my bookshelves and I couldnt find it. It was a very thin book (less than 1/2 inch) and was red and said in white "food allergies" on the front. I got it at the health food store. But this might help :

My daughter and I are DQ1 (sub 5), DQ3 (sub 7). We also have the alpha portion of DQ2 (Celiac gene).

Other than gluten here's our intolerances:

Me

Dairy, soy, cranberries Dx. Plus I know corn & peas too. I'm still trying to figure what the heck else. I'm SO sensitive -- debating the Specific Carb Diet. Of all my intolerances, soy hits me the fastest, within a couple of hours.

Daughter

Dairy, soy, cranberries, yeast, eggs -- all Dx

Im not feelin bad. :) Just curious about this.

I did try to "add" back a few things and I paid. But I'm over it now. You wont hear me complain often. I just deal!

But today I feel pretty darn good.

Interesting about cranberries....I've just never liked them.

I've known about SOY for about 13 years. Everytime over the years I tried to add it back....it let me know NOT!!!

Peanuts and Corn have been on my avoid list for many many years also. I tried to re-introduce corn just recently and it didnt seem to bother me too much, but what I found was that I "craved" it non-stop. Like would wake up in the morning and think of what corny thing I could eat for breakfast, snack, lunch, dinner. And I would gorge on it.......Can you say ADDICTIVE? So I nixed the corn FOR GOOD!!

Legumes I think I can eat once in a blue moon and not suffer. But I dont really miss the beans all that much.

I have discovered some other "starchy" foods that I tolerate well if I just want some....like "Malanga". Like potatoes but not a nightshade. And sweet potatoes.

Hi! I just received my Enterolab results last night, and your forum really helped! I'm trying to determine a little more info about the gene results. The results stated:

HLA-DQB1 Molecular analysis, Allele 1 0302

HLA-DQB1 Molecular analysis, Allele 2 0602

Serologic equivalent: HLA-DQ 3,1 (Subtype 8,6)

Does this mean I am DQ1 and DQ3? I'm not sure what "category" I fit into!

I'm really glad that everyone contributed (ShayFL, Ibd, Rachel-24 & climbmtwhitney) to this forum. When I read the forum last night after receiving my results, I was SO GLAD to find other people out there "like me" in the same boat. I have felt very alone in this for a while, and not understood by others (except my husband). I have learned to keep my gluten intolerant/celiac issues to myself since people aren't very sympathetic (at least the people I work with!).

Can anybody answer these questions:

Am I DQ1 and DQ3? (My full gene "reading" is listed above)

What do the Subtypes 8,6 mean?

Do the gene "categories" usually mean you are more prone to be sensitive to certain foods (like nightshades, legumes, etc)? I currently eat green and red peppers, beans (baked beans, chili beans...), soy, nuts....could I be predisposed to be sensitive to these foods?

      Thank’s for addressing the issue of mushrooms.  I was under the impression that only wild mushrooms were gluten-free.  Have been avoiding cultivated mushrooms for years. Also, the issue of smoked food was informative.  In France last year, where there is hardly any prepared take-out food that is gluten-free, I tried smoked chicken.  Major mistake!

      my IGG is 815 IGA 203  but tTG-Iga is   <0.4!!!!!!!!!!!!!   oh my god- 13 days of agony and the test is negative?  I don't even know what to do next. There zero doubt in my mind that I have an issue with wheat and probably more so with gluten as symptoms are dramatically worse the more gluten a product has   I am going to write up the history of my issues for the past few years and start a food/symptom diary to bring with me to the GI doctor in March.   I googled like crazy to try to find out what other things might cause these symptoms and the only thing that truly fits besides celiac is NCGS   but I guess there are some other things I maybe should be tested for ...? like SIBO?   I will continue to eliminate any foods that cause me distress (as I have been doing for the past couple of years) and try to keep a record. Can anyone recommend an app or some form or something that would simplify this? I have a very full and busy life and taking the time to write out each symptom name in full would be tedious and time consuming- some sort of page with columns to check off would be ideal. I am not at all tech savvy so that's not something I can make myself ... I'm hoping there's some thing out there that I can just download and print out   do I give up on testing for celiac with such a low number? I am 70 yrs old I have been almost completely off gluten for the most part for about 2 yrs. I had a meal of vital wheat gluten vegan roast,  rolls and stuffing made from home baked bread and an apple pie- and had the worst pain and gas and bloating and odd rumblings in my gut etc - almost went to the ER it was so bad. I was thinking, since I'm spilling a lot of calcium in my urine, that perhaps this was a kidney stone (never had one before but there's always that first time, right?)    Saw my endo on Jan 20th and after hearing the story about the symptoms from eating that holiday meal, she suggested doing a gluten challenge. She said 2 weeks was fine- she said stopping it in the middle if symptoms got bad was fine- In the meantime I'd read that 2 weeks was not enough- called and argued with the nurse about this, but ultimately decided to stop the gluten on the 13th day and get the test done because I was in too much pain and almost suicidal and knew I could not continue.   so.............. that's where I am now I have had no bread since Sunday. I did have some rolled oats today and had some gas and bloating afterwards I did have some wheat germ in a smoothie on Tuesday and had a stomach ache later that night.   but overall I feel so much better! all the joint pain is gone! the nausea is gone. The stomach pain and gas and bloating are going away. Still a bit gassy but no more of that horrible odor. wow, that would clear a room if I was out in public!  I see a GI nurse March 4th  I hope she'll be able to help sort this out! can you think of what my next steps might be?

      What you’re describing is actually very common, and unfortunately the timing of the biopsy likely explains the confusion. Yes, it is absolutely possible for the small intestine to heal enough in three months on a strict gluten-free diet to produce a normal or near-normal biopsy, especially when damage was mild to begin with. In contrast, celiac antibodies can stay elevated for many months or even years after gluten removal, so persistently high antibody levels alongside the celiac genes and clear nutrient deficiencies strongly point to celiac disease, even if you don’t feel symptoms. Many people with celiac are asymptomatic but still develop iron and vitamin deficiencies and silent intestinal damage. The lack of immediate symptoms makes it harder emotionally, but it doesn’t mean gluten isn’t harming you. Most specialists would consider this a case of celiac disease with a false-negative biopsy due to early healing rather than “something else,” and staying consistently gluten-free is what protects you long-term—even when your body doesn’t protest right away.

      Yes, I meant if you had celiac disease but went gluten-free before screening, your results would end up false-negative. As @trents mentioned, this can also happen when a total IGA test isn't done.
