Jen- the only prepackaged food that does not irritate me is tuna in a pouch. There are many pouches of tuna out there, but I have only found one brand with the ingredients of only tuna and water. I have tried the "natural" applesauce just the other day actually, and all I can say is there must have been something in it they were not labeling because it did give me bad gas.

Just as a warning, dried fruit still gets my stomach rumbling and gurgling, so I advise to stay away as long as possible, but my body just craves raisins sometimes, so I deal with the side effects.....

Just found this on the internet and thought I would share......

Q. Does StarKist® Tuna contain any gluten or grain ingredients?

There is no gluten in StarKist® Tuna with the exception of one variety of Tuna Creations - Herb & Garlic, which contains ingredients from wheat and barley. Additionally the crackers in StarKist Lunch to-Go® would contain gluten. Please note that due to product changes or new product introductions, we always recommend you check the ingredient statement for the most current ingredient information.

I forgot to ask the SCDers if anyone used bottled mustard from the store. I thought I read in the book we could, but then later I read about mustard powder, so I am not sure what to do. As if you couldn't tell, I am craving tuna salad, so I am trying to assemble all of the ingredients I can to make it taste good!!!

Also, does anyone eat deli ham/turkey. I haven't touched or tried that, but I have had the deli swiss cheese and felt "normal" afterwards...

shimma Apprentice

I haven't had much deli meat since going gluten-free because of the additives. I'm sure there are gluten-free legal brands out there somewhere although I couldn't tell you which ones. For SCD, I would be kind of surprised if you found a ham that wasn't cured with sugar - but if you do, let me know the brand!

Misa Rookie

Read somewhere that "regular" bottle mustard is fine on the SCD.I don't know what regular is. Maybe you have multiple choices in the US, over here we only have one kind  I use it with my chicken dinners and it seem to agree.

To those of you who haven't made the yoghurt yet; have any of you started with the acidophilus probiotic supplement yet, are you thinking of introducing this in the future? Have you managed to find one without the bifidus bacteria strain?

Misa :)

Guest gfinnebraska

Thanks, PreOptMegs, for the tuna info... I forgot to look on my bagged tuna last night. Nice to know it is definitely gluten-free. IF you make tuna salad, make sure you make your own mayo using the SCD recipe. I need to do that today... I am also craving tuna!! :) I make mine with tuna, dill pickle relish, apples (chopped), a little salt & pepper and mayo. :) Yum!!

Misa: We have MANY different kinds of mustard. I use plain French's yellow mustard on this diet. Have not had any issues with that.

I have not had any luck finding sugar-free deli meat. I have used reg. deli meat occasionally, but try not to make it a habit. I make some "wraps" one day using lettuce as the "wrap" part, then putting meat, cheese, mustard, tomatoes and mayo on the inside. Yum!! They came out really good ~ I needed a food to take on a picnic.

PreOptMegs Explorer

I am not much of a plain yellow mustard eater, so with my tuna I eat spicy brown mustard. There are only like 4 ingredients and it is all natural without the loom of the "spices" ingredient (I hate that because who really knows...). Now that I have found out I can have canned tuna with the mustard, I can't stop eating it! lol

I have not found any deli meats SCD legal either. That really sucks.

I am thorougly CONFUSED, so SCDers please help. Okay, in breaking the vicious cycle, it says canned fish in WATER/OIL is legal, but soy products are ILLEGAL, so I am unsure as to if I can eat canned tuna in water because it contains soy!!!! Sometimes I just get hung up in the details, but I guess with this diet you can never be too careful!

Heather22 Rookie

Why is there soy in tuna? The canned tuna that I buy simply reads, Albacore tuna, water. I would maybe look for a different brand. I hope canned tuna/water is legal because I use it as a staple.

I was looking at canned tuna this weekend (for my cat : ) and noticed the soy in the tuna too. I figured it was not okay then... But better let someone else answer b/c I haven't even offically started the diet yet !

Questions--before I start I am trying to figure out what I can eat. Sorry for all the questions--I feel like the book left a lot unsaid for me. What about the following--

Spices? I saw you can make your own garlic and onion powder in the book--so does that mean my 60 mccormick spices are off limits? (Yes-my house is "spice-obsessed!")

Cheese? What kind of cheese are you eating? I took a look around the store and most of what I looked at had preservatives and a form of potato in them for anti-caking or something. What kind of cheese is safe cheese? I know the list says aged atleast 30 days...Does that show up on a package?

Beans? Do any of you eat plain canned beans? I hate to think I have to make all my own beans from scratch now. I read the canned beans aren't "prepared properly...", so that's why I wonder.

Thanks--I wish this was the last of my questions

PS--Anyone ck out this site? It has links to lots of other SCD sites: Open Original Shared Link

jenvan-

spices... I believe no spice mixes are allowed, but single packaged spices are definately encouraged.

cheese- I eat swiss and mild cheddar. no shreaded cheeses in bags are allowed because of the potato starch you mentioned. Look at the cheeses in brick form.

I definately stay away from canned anything, so I don't eat the canned beans. there is a recipe in the book for how to properly cook beans, but I haven't "craved" them enough to go through the time to cook them.

Heather 22- is there a name brand found in local supermarkets that just contains tuna and water? So far I know starkist and chicken of the sea have soy in them...

Guest gfinnebraska

I just checked my tuna ~ yes... SOY! Who knew??!!??:blink::blink:

That is a TOTAL bummer! I guess I won't be eating THAT for a while ~ good thing it does not expire until Sept. '07! Ha!

I don't eat any canned beans because they are all "off limits" on this diet.

I agree with PreOptMegs on the cheese ~ I eat mild cheddar ~ I just shred my own from a block. :)

I have been SO busy lately that all I have been eating is fruit, fresh green beans and meat. I use homemade mayo on the meat, and am really enjoying that!! The last batch I made turned out SO good!! I was hoping to use it on tuna... oh well!

I am having everyone here for Labor Day on Monday ~ figured that was the easiest for this diet!! I am having burgers and lots of fresh fruit. I am serving other items, but just can't eat them! I hope everyone else is doing well, and have a great holiday weekend!!

Heather22 Rookie

A brand of tuna that is safe is Clover Leaf. It is a pretty big line, so hopefully you will find it. I am also in Canada, so maybe we have different lines than in the US.

Good luck!

Heather

PreOptMegs Explorer

Clover Leaf does not ring a bell, but maybe I just need to look harder at my grocery story. The "mainstream" tuna at my grocery store is starkist and chicken of the sea. I think I have seen a pouch of tuna that is just tuna packed in water, but the pouches can be so expensive....

Guest gfinnebraska

Mine is the kind in the pouch, but is still says soy. :( I have never heard of the cloverleaf brand either... I will have to check next time I am in the store.

PreOptMegs Explorer

I am so bummed out about the tuna. I had eaten 8 cans before I did a thorough check and found the "soy". I didn't have any adverse affects (No gas, discomfort, no signs) at all with the soy. I don't know if that is good or bad. Hopefully it means that my digestive system is healing, but that is just a guess. It is going to be so hard for me with Halloween coming up to sit there and watch my sister and brother gobble up all of the candy their heart desires, while I chomp on a carrot. Has anyone here been on the diet more than a year and tried to start integrating "illegal" foods. I am curious as to how long it is going to take before we can eat all of the "illegal" foods we want!

Guest gfinnebraska

How long?? I think, if I read the book right, it wants you to stay on the diet for life!

Eeeek! I can not do that, but I think it would make a good yearly cleansing ritual. :) I have to confess ~ again ~ that during "that time" I tend to lose control.

I am SO good all month... but if my hormones are strong, I tend to eat whatever chocolate I can get my hands on!!! I was really bad this month. I didn't get sick, but I did feel icky for a day. THEN, back to cleaning out!!! I have not had any D, but I do stick to the beginning phase for a couple of days... again!! *sigh* I confess... I am weak!! Halloween won't bother me... I hope!! :) BUT, if you slip, just go back to the beginning phase and continue. Don't beat yourself up over it. Okay? ;)

PreOptMegs Explorer

I thought I remember reading that it is required to stay on the diet a year before beginning to introduce potatoes, chocolate, etc, but they say that they do not recommend a diet high in processed or refined foods ever again. I can handle that.... I just want one day a week to indulge myself in all of the chocolate I can handle. So after eating the chocolate do you really feel horrible? Do you make your own yogurt? I feel like I have gotten so much "better" but I don't know how my body is going to react if i have chocolate or popcorn. I guess I will stick to cheese, raisins and peanuts!

Guest gfinnebraska

A couple of months ago I had chocolate & popcorn... I didn't feel very good the next day, but the "icky" feeling didn't last longer than that. I am not going to suggest "cheating," but you won't die if you do. I am entering into a wonderful stage of life called menopause, and I have noticed the last few months that my hormone levels really peak and valley. When I am peaked, my will power is gone... then I regain it and vow to do better... until the next peak! I know it is only setting me back in my healing, so I am trying to do better!!! I still feel great and know I am moving forward... it is just going to take longer if I do not remain faithful.

I don't eat the yogurt yet. I really am not craving it. I love fruit, cheese and meats. I will probably add yogurt this winter when fruit is not so plentiful. :)

I also eat salads with the mayonnaise out of the book... that is really good. I cook chicken on the grill, sprinkle with cheddar cheese and top with the dressing. Yum!!

Last night I had a big t-bone steak. :)

PreOptMegs Explorer

I would definately recommend the yogurt maker as soon as possible. I wasn't exactly "craving" yogurt, but I needed a lower calorie calcium source than cheese, and the proteobiotics have been awesome. My digestion has improved so much with the yogurt. I would definately recommend it even if you aren't a big yogurt fan, just for the healing benefits.

PreOptMegs Explorer

Since being diagnosed with being gluten intolerant, my mindset about food has totally changed. It is like my body and brain knows what I can and can't have and I don't even crave anything I can't eat.... but since I guess I could technically eat a peanut butter cup because it is gluten-free, I know the aftermath will not be good, so I just continue on with the SCD. I am all about staying as strict as I can on this diet, so when it comes time to integrate 'illegal' back in, I know my body will be in the best condition I could get it.

LisaR Newbie

Hi all.

My bloating and cramps and D and discomfort are out of control. I'm going to try the SCD. It sounds like you're all doing wonderfully on it!

I'm looking into a yogurt maker, but I'd like to ask a general question:

can you list what you normally eat in a day and when and the your general calorie goal per day? I need to lose weight, but when I feel like this I just can't eat! So I'm worried that if I don't get enough calories my body will go into starvation mode. Help!

I was thinking that if you all made lists of a typical days food, that would help me with a goal! It might be good for all of us!

Hi Matilda ~ welcome!!

Yes, I could not eat any dairy/casein when I started the diet. It took about a month for me to heal enough to introduce it. Now I can eat it all I want with zero side effects. :) The book says that you can make the yogurt using whatever milk source you prefer.

I need to go back and re-read the book to motivate myself again. Plus, so many people have questions and I would hate to give the wrong answer!! :(

Good luck and let us know if you are joining our little group! :)

P.S. Not all of us want to lose weight ~ it is also possible to gain weight with the SCD. You are basically just healing and should return to the best weight for you!!

I believe there are people gaining on the SCD. You might go back and read some of the posts and e-mail those using the SCD to gain. :)

Heather22 Rookie

Hi ladies!

Making the commitment to try the SCD is a difficult one, especially when you feel you are already so restricted. But, there comes a point where you will try ANYTHING! There's always the question "What if this is the thing that works?". That's what convinced me.

I'll use today as an example: I guess I should also say that I am not 100% SCD, sometimes I deviate from the diet just because I know I can tolerate it....and still feel the SCD benefits when I eat it. (It gives me a little feeling of control)

Breakfast:

Smoothie: strawberries, blueberries, banana, protein powder, greens +

Snack: pumpkin puree, honey, cinnamon, dry curd cottage cheese (mixed together)

Lunch: salmon, swiss chard (left overs)

Snack: homemade yogurt, vanilla, honey, RE-bar (organic fruit and veggie bar)

Supper: chicken, green beans

Snack: yogurt, flax seed cracker

I highly suggest trying out this diet. I am very skepticle of literature and diets, but from all the research I have read, this diet makes complete sense. It might be the answer for you!

Best wishes,

Heather : )

I had a very rough month after diagnosis. No exaggeration, lost so much inflammatory weight, I looked like a bag of bones, underneath i had been literally starving to death. I did start feeling noticeably better after a month of very strict control of my kitchen and home. What are you eating for breakfast and lunch? I ignored my doc and ate oats, yes they were gluten free, but some brands are at the higher end of gluten free. Lots of celics can eat Bob's Red Mill gluten-free oats, but not me. I can now eat them, but they have to be grown and processed according to the "purity protocol" methods. I mail order them, Montana Gluten-Free brand. A food and symptoms and activities log can be helpful in tracking down issues. You might be totally aware, but I have to mention about the risk of airborne gluten. As the doc that diagnosed me warned . . Remember eyes, ears, nose, and mouth all lead to your stomach and intestines.  Are you getting any cross contamination? Airborne gluten? Any pets eating gluten (they eat it, lick themselves, you pet them...)? Any house remodeling? We live in an older home, always fixing something. I've gotten glutened from the dust from cutting into plaster walls, possibly also plywood (glues). The suggestions by many here on vitamin supplements also really helped me. I had some lingering allergies and asthma, which are now 99% gone. I was taking Albuterol inhaler every hour just to breathe, but thiamine in form of benfotiamine kicked that down to 1-2 times a day within a few days of starting it. Also, since cutting out inflammatory seed oils (canola, sunflower, grapeseed, etc) and cooking with real olive oil, avocado oil, ghee, and coconut oil, I have noticed even greater improvement overall and haven't used the inhaler in months! It takes time to weed out everything in your life that contains gluten, and it takes awhile to heal and rebuild your health. At first it's mentally exhausting, overwhelming, even obsessive, but it gets better and second nature.

Hi,  I care for my seven year old daughter with Celiac. After watching her for months, I have figured out that she has problem with two kinds of fats- animal fat and cooking oils. It basically makes her intestine sore enough that she feels spasms when she is upset. It only happens on days when she has eaten more fat than her usual every day diet. (Her usual diet has chia seeds, flaxseeds, and avocado/ pumpkin seeds for fat and an occasional chicken breast.) I stopped using cooking oils last year, and when I reintroduced eggs and dairy, both of which I had held off for a few months thinking it was an issue of the protein like some Celiac patients habe mentioned to be the case, she has reacted in the same fashion as she does with excess fats. So now I wonder if her reaction to dairy and eggs is not really because of protein but fat.   I don't really have a question, just wondering if anyone finds this familiar and if it gets better with time.  Thank you.

Hello, My name is Chanda and you are not the only one that gose through the same things. I have found that what's easiest for me is finding a few meals each week that last. I have such severe reactions to gluten that it shuts my entire body down. I struggle everyday with i can't eat enough it feels like, when I eat more I lose more weight. Make sure that you look at medication, vitamins and shampoo and conditioner also. They have different things that are less expensive at Walmart.

Thank you so much! I saw some tips around the forum to make a food diary and now that I know that the community also struggles with corn, egg and soy, the puzzle pieces came together! Just yesterday I tried eating eggs and yes, he’s guilty and charged. Those there are my 3 combo nausea troublemakers. I’m going to adjust my diet ☺️ Also thank you for the information about MCAS! I’m from South America and little it’s talked about it in here. It’s honestly such a game changer now for treatment and recovery. I know I’m free from SIBO and Candida since I’ve been tested for it, but I’m still going to make a endoscopy to test for H. Pylori and Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Thank you again!! Have a blessed weekend 🤍

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.
