What Do You Do Right After You Get Glutened?

Hi guys,

Got glutened last night by hummus- so frustrating. I was wondering if there is anything you do to help in the following days. I suffer from constipation, soreness, head fog, fatigue and nasea. In the past I have limited soild food and tried to do at home smoothies with rice protein powder. This helps to not upset my stomach as I wil feel VERY full eating the smallest meal. I was thinking too, i know that fish oil in large amounts act as an anti-inflamitory to the intestines, so the thought of raw salmon sounded very good. I am always unsure if i should double my supplements or wait a week until the gluten goes away and then try hard to heal. I usually have a delayed response (about 2 days til i feel it) then it will last about a week.

I was just wondering if you have any sort of ritual or routine that you think helps you out?

I usually eat rice, bananas, and beef broth for a day or two...depending on how bad it is...then I start incorporating other things little by little...I'm usually back to normal by day 3.

When I get glutened I find that Red Bull really helps. It's a liquid shot of caffeine and B vitamins. It minimizes my nausea and definitely helps with the fatigue. I can't say it helps the bloating or the general discomfort, but my mood improves which, for me, is a biggie. If you get really nauseous though, you may not want to try it because of the caffeine. For me though, it's a life saver.

I have to eat really small meals, too. Usually plain chicken sits fairly well, bananas do ok, but I can't do a whole lot of carbs, so I have to break them up throughout the day.

For the first few days after I've been glutened, I drink apple cider vinegar with water (like 1 tsp/1 oz of water) after I eat and sometimes in between. I'm not sure if the glutening minimizes the stomach acid that I produce, but it certainly helps me get through the few days of "the burn".

I drink alot of peppermint tea, it seems to calm my stomach.

Keep hydrated (I mix gatorade and water), eat mild foods (bananas, rice, no dairy), and keep gas meds on hand.

eat plain (if I can stomach it, I get nausea), take extra doses of vitamin D and B12 for the mental symptoms and sometimes a natural diuretic if the edema is more than 2 lbs in 1 day.

this weekend I also tried an anti histimane to see if that would lessen the impact, didn't help with the D and was okay otherwise, not entirely sure if it helped or not

I wonder if an anti-inflamitory would help? My stomach gets really inflamed and i think thats part of what causes my constipation. Any thoughts?

catch 22 with the anti inflams, it will reduce the inflamation but then some of them can increase constipation as well <_<

someone else on this forum has suggested aloe vera gel, that's supposed to have natural anti inflamatory properties, I was thinking of giving it a try myself

Just went through this myself -- 2 days of symptoms (D, brain fog, fatigue). It is so frustrating to be rolling along gluten-free, feeling OK and then -- yikes! What did I eat? How did this happen?

Anyway....aloe vera gel helps me. I use the Organic, Whole Leaf kind. I mix it with a glass of water -- about 1 part gel to 4 parts water -- stir it up and just swig it down. It really helps me.

PS -- I did figure out that I definitely have a problem if I eat too many corn products too. :mellow:

      What are your daily meals? Guilty pleasure snacks? Protein bars? I feel when looking for gluten free foods they are filled with sugar cholesterol. Looking for healthy gluten-free protein bars. Something to fill since sometimes I feel like not to eat anything. Especially if on vacation and unsure of cross contamination I figure go with a salad and protein bar to fill and play it safe.

      Unfortunately, there is presently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. NCGS is thought to be much more common than celiac disease. We know that celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder but the mechanism of NCGS is less clear. Both call for an elimination of gluten from the diet.

      Thanks for your reply Trents…most appreciated.  I am unfamiliar with celiac labs terminology so I wanted to know if the presence of HLA variants (DA:101, DA:105, DQB1:0301 and DQB1:0501) that the labs detected had any merit in predisposing one to be more sensitive to gluten/carbs than the general population?  Also,  I found what you said about NCGS very interesting and I appreciate you mentioning that.  I’ve worked hard to research and advocate for myself with my Hematologist and now with a new GI, since my bowel surgery and to maintain my Vitamin B12 health concurrent with keeping my levels of Iron in the optimal range. I’ve been tested for SIBO (do not have it), biopsy showed negative for HPylori, and have had Fecal studies done (nothing showed up) and I understand how a loss of a large amount of bowel could be highly impacting re: SIBO, malabsorption and motility issues. So I’ve managed pretty well diet and elimination-wise until just recently. That said, this new problem with extreme bloating, distention and upper girth, NAFLD just occured over the last 4 months so it is new for me and I thought celiac might be a possible issue. I’ll probably just continue on in this less gluten/carbs seem to be better for me and see how reintroducing certain foods go.  Thanks again.

      Thanks bumped it up and now take all 3 vitamins 2 capsules each with the super b complex at breakfast. I will give it some time to see if I notice a difference. I am going to track my eating daily diary on a myfitness pal app to see if the "claimed" gluten free foods bother me or not.

      Please can anyone help. I was diagnosed on 23rd December and I am trying my best to get my head around all the things to look out for. I have read that yeast extract is not to be eaten by coeliacs. Why? And is this all yeast extract. Or is this information wrong. Thanks.
