Am I Celiac?!

Hi, I have been quite active here in celiac.com for about a month now suspecting to be gluten intolerant.

But then seeing how severe my symptoms are.. I am thinking it is celiac disease.

That reminds me.

To find out whether you are celiac or not, can it only be done by blood test?

I am asking this cos I am FINALLY receiving an allergy test next week but it is uses a different method.

In the meanwhile, may I ask for your opinion?

Here are my symptoms after consuming gluten:

-abnormal bloating: all the sudden it looks as if I am about to go into a labour, yup that bad.

-stomach cramp: mid abdomen stabbing pain which lasts few days..and if I continue on consuming gluten it just gets worse and spreads to my entire upper body.. more like a muscle cramp.

-diarrhea: timing varies but usually occurs after 30mins or so. Sometimes I have to go more than once.

-contispation: often diarrhea gets contispated LOL.

-vomiting: saliva becomes all bubbly and acidic and makes me puke.

-Fatigue: Usually just before or after diarrhea, all my energy is drained.

-insomnia: sleep pattern has gone out of the window. I can hardly manage 2 hours sleep each day and these are 'light' sleeps.

-skin rash: this does not always occur but when it does, usually appears a day after consumption to usually top half of the body and lasts a long time.

-loss of appetite: I do not feel hungry in the morning nor lunch. Can not tell whether I am hungry or not.

-Depression: whilst eating gluten, I feel rather great but then whilst it's supposedly being digested lol..I feel poop and this lasts for few days and lately this sort of has triggered me to consume more gluten every day.

-ADDICTION: ok, this has not been so bad until recently.

-Weak joints: this has been with me FOREVER. Especially my right wrist and ankle are hopeless. Even holding a spoon hurts, in fact staying still aches that now I am used to the pain. But lately my right knee and leg muscle feels over stretched and tried.

Despite the symptoms, I can not control myself.

In fact my main diet is now purely on gluten. Usually around the mornings, when I am more sane lol there is NO craving in fact I want to get better and hate gluten but later on in the day, if there is gluten in the house I go for it.. not just one piece of gluten. I become more like a lunatic. Often I go through the hassle of going out to super markets to buy some LOL. Trying to get myself out of the mess, I bought few Free Food ranges but I can not help it. If there is less of gluten around the house, maybe that will help but my family does NOT believe in such things as gluten intolerance nor celiac & STRONGLY believes it can be cured by consuming LOTS more of it, which I have done (knowing they are wrong but just to prove them wrong) since April....L.O.L.

& Lactose intolerant: it's been with me ever since I can remember.

& Other food allergies & intolerances such as: soy, few types of nuts, coconut, grains, potatoes, alcohol, sweet potatoes, fried food, jellies like gummy bear, some dark chocolates, corn, egg yolk..etc. Though the symptoms for these have been rather mild until around last year, along with gluten.. things have become HARD TO IGNORE.

My body is in such a mess now.

There is not a muscle in my top half of the body that does not ache.

Mid-adomen area has been in stabbing pain..so I wake up feeling poop (no other word can describe my state better than this) every day..in fact worsening.

Even waking up does not refreshen me, I feel more fatigued with no appetite nether for life or food.

My symptoms seem quite severe, don't you reckon?

I think I am celiac... what do you think?

I only want opinions, I am getting myself tested next week but I NEED some thoughts from others right now..

+ if ANYONE knows any means to come off gluten addiction, PLEASE let me know.

I WANT to improve myself but at the same time can not help myself losing control..

+ what happens if you are celiac but continue on consuming lots of gluten?

I just wish my family comes out of the denial and start believing in me.. lol.

x

There is a difference between an allergy to wheat and an autoimmune disease. Besure you get the correct tests. Maybe both.

I am sure if you search this web site, the correct auto immune blood tests will pop up. Bring the names of the tests to the doctors, because science sometimes gets ahead of the doctors.

Your description of craving wheat sounds like me before I got Dx. I was visiting King Arthur Flour in Vermont and bought a new stove that was designed to bake breads. What was I thinking? Ther are other diseases Crohns for example, so best to get the full workup rather than self diagnosis. That is not to say that not eating gluten is not a bad idea. My tests were negative, (DNA positive) and I can't touch the stuff. Lord knows I've tried.

Best. M

@dmallbee, about 8% of celiacs react to the oat protein avenin like they do to the wheat protein gluten. In addition, there are some cultivars of oats that apparently do actually contain gluten.

I was diagnosed at 18 months old with celiac and lived without wheat, rye, oats, and barley as instructed by my doctor, Dr. Katz at Boston Children's Hospital in the 60's and 70's. I don't agree nor recommend doctors removing oats from restriction, certified gluten-free or not.  I have eaten certified gluten free oats and have had the usual reactions to gluten.  Please reconsider this with newly diagnosed patients.

It's great to hear that the trip went well, and the general consensus I hear about gluten-free travel in Europe, including my own experiences, is that it is much easier done in comparison to traveling and eating gluten-free in the USA.

Safely home from my recent trip to the UK. I had zero gut issues while traveling around this pretty country. Our tour leader was very good at making sure the 2 of us with gluten issues on our tour were well taken care of.  We often got our meals before the rest of the group and adaptations to the menu for us were well thought out and very tasty. I just wish restaurants here in the USA took as much pride in making food that everyone can enjoy. Many of the hotels and pubs we ate at had numerous options that were safe for us with wheat/gluten restrictions to eat.
