Hey ( a celiac virgin here ;)) , i have been gluten/soya and diary free since the middle of january, I had two weeks of feeling fantastic, sleeping properly and generally looking healthy but for the last three i have felt really rough. I am sure i haven't eaten anything i shouldn't although the soya allergy is a NIGHTMARE!!! Do your emotions play havoc on your body as i have had a bereavement or is it just the healing process??? having felt so good its disheartening to feel so bad. I don't know anyone with food allergies to ask and my mates just think i am lucky losing over 63ibs, unhelpful i know and my family have other things to worry about.

Any help would be greatly appreciated .

Hello & Welcome

To answer your question yes, emotional issues can play a part in your recovery... Since you are very new to the lifestyle it is hard to say if its just your body trying to adapt to the new gluten-free foods & withdrawal . It's prpbably some of both. It is common to have ups & downs in the healing process. And it does take time, some feel better sooner than others ... There are some who after three- four even five years still have issues. Then others get instant gradification.

Many of us have found after going off wehat products we get more in tune with our own bodies & find we have sensitivies to other food items. Ie: corn, soy, dairy & so on.

Sorry for your issues of bereavement... that is always a tough thing to cope with. My prayers are with you.

Absolutely! Stress has a direct affect on the immune system and can make problems you are having a lot worse. I stressed myself into a case of shingles last year and it was not fun. I know it's hard to chill out when things pile up but try to have some fun when you are getting all stressed out so you can relax a bit. I am so sorry it was a bereavement which affected you....that can be tougher to deal with. Hang in there and stick with the diet...it'll get much better!

A resounding YES!

I feel every emotion in my gut. Nervous, anxious, scared, worried, angry... even butterflies when I'm happy.

You are not alone.

You said you had a bereavement. I am so sorry for whatever your loss is. Sadly, celiac can also be a bereavement because you lose so much when you get diagnosed.

If you use the search function on this board at the top and put in "withdrawals" you can read about other people's experiences at length and you'll find out it's not uncommon to go up and down for awhile. You'll also read about what people do with their diet to promote healing. I spent quite a bit of time reading old threads and it helped me a lot.

Sometimes your GI tract is just sensitive for awhile. I felt pretty bad this morning from eating too much gluten free junk food yesterday. I wasn't glutened, but my tummy just couldn't handle the onslaught of 2 cookies, a brownie and some chocolate. UGH and ooops.

Thanks for replying and your thoughts, i am hanging in there and its a relief to know that its not neccessarily because i have been glutened?soya'd or dairy'd. Although thanks to sandsurfgirl, i to have been tucking into the naughty gluten free food for comfort although my stomach doesn't feel very comfy right now so. I just feel constantly hungry yet nothing seems to stay in me for long, even bland food, if anyone has any recipes or suggestions they would be appreciated.

Thanks again and hope you feel better sandsurfgirl

my favorite thing for situations like this is to make a big pot of quinoa, cooked in half water, half gluten-free chicken broth (or veggie broth, if you prefer). it's easy, yummy, nutritious, and soothing.

That was EXACTLY how I was...but BEFORE going gluten - free. Stress unequivocally provoked the "attacks." I remember thinking it felt like someone pressing a button of this poison into my stomach, constant pressing as I felt nervous that would always end in some digestive attack.

But after going gluten free, that went a way. For a while the nervousness went to the stomach...but that was one of the first solid signs to me that the diet was working. I was insanely nervous/anxious/stressed about something...and one week went by, then another...and no digestive attack!! I was stunned, and I was convinced.

Now when I'm nervous I really don't feel it in my stomach/backside at all like I used to. Just tenseness in the jaw and things like that, probably what most normal people experience...

So...I hope it goes away for you soon.

Stress quite often affects people physically. Headaches, migraines, asthma, blood pressure, skin or digestive problems, you get the idea.

Thanks for your replies, it turns out that i now react to sugar which brings very similar symptons to gluten so we are now religiously sticking to whole foods but avoiding fruit in the hope that i will stop feeling as tho i have done ten rounds with mike tyson.

I am on day 13 of eating gluten  and have decided to have the celiac panel done tomorrow instead of Wed. (and instead of extending it a few more weeks) because I am SO incredibly sick. I have almost no appetite and am not able to consume the required daily intake of calcium to try to keep up with the loss of calcium from the high parathyroid hormone and/or the renal calcium leak.    I have spent the past 15 years working hard to improve my health. I lost 50lbs, got off handfuls of medications, lowered my cholesterol to enviable levels, and in spite of having end stage osteoarthritis in both knees, with a good diet and keeping active I have NO pain in those joints- til now.  Almost all of my joints hurt now I feel like someone has repeatedly punched me all over my torso- even my ribs hurt- I have nausea, gas, bloating, headache, mood swings, irritability, horrid flatulence (afraid to leave the house or be in any enclosed spaces with other people- the smell would knock them off their feet) I was so sure that I wanted a firm diagnosis but now- I'm asking myself is THIS worth it? esp over the past 2 yrs I have been feeling better and better the more I adjusted my diet to exclude highly refined grains and processed foods. I didn't purposely avoid gluten, but it just happened that not eating gluten has made me feel better.   I don't know what I would have to gain by getting a definitive diagnosis. I think possibly the only advantage to a DX would be that I could insist on gluten-free foods in settings where I am unable to have access to foods of my choice (hospital, rehab, nursing home)  and maybe having a medical reason to see a dietician?   please let me know if it's reasonable to just go back to the way I was eating.  Actually I do plan to buy certified gluten-free oats as that is the only grain I consume (and really like) so there will be some minor tweaks I hope and pray that I heal quickly from any possible damage that may have been done from 13 days of eating gluten.

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this. Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
