Hummus- Will Homemade Hurt?

Hi all,

I want to make homemade hummus tonight, which I love, but a little scared of the ingredients - there may be some sneaky gluteness in there!

- 1 can of chickpeas

- 1 lemon

- Olive oil

- Tahini (1 spoon ful)

- Chilli powder (to flabour)

I guess my concern is the tahini?

Also, Boy has pickled some aubergines - am I ok to eat these?

Tahini is usually safe. Check the chili powder as well. As far as the aubergines, it depends what's in them and whether you are personally sensitive to distilled vinegar.

I love to make hummus. If you are unsure of the tahini you can leave it out or just get some plain sesame oil and use a teaspoon of that instead. Tahini is pretty much just ground sesame seeds and olive oil. Some brands might have "natural flavors" or something like so thats what you need to look out for. The list Skylark posted is good. I printed it out (and the gluten safe list too) and carry it with me when I'm shopping.

      Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute.
