Celiac As A Defense?

This is week 2 that I've been sick with a virus. It feels like unless there's a miracle, it's gonna take another week to feel half way normal. Doc said not flu or cold (what's the difference?). I get a flu shot every year, but didn't even get a chance this year. I've had flu and cold before but never like this.

I was wondering if now that I'm basically gluten free, my defenses are down??

I never really paid much attention to those cartoon mucinex commercials, but I do now, it really helps. Hope it's gluten free...of course it was Saturday when I began to take them and the 800 number was closed for the weekend. I don't see anything suspicious in the ingredients though.

maybe you just have a stronger virus than you've had before???? how long have you been gluten free?? i would assume that being gluten-free, you would be more healthy and ready to fight infections.... could you possibly have Mono- that wipes people out more than regular viruses, and takes longer. hhmmmmm..... hope u feel better soon!

Being gluten-free should help your immune system. Sounds like a nasty bug and I hope you feel well soon!

I agree that your immune system should be stronger now...however, maybe you're a bit deficient in Vitamin D, which is so common in people with celiac. At the last conference I attended, it was recommended that we take 10,000 IUs of Vitamin D3 daily. If your Vitamin D level is low, you can catch viruses very easily. Also, taking L-Lysine (500-1,000 mg daily) helps the body fight off viruses and bacteria, and studies have shown that it can cut the duration of a virus in half. Lastly, you might consider adding Mullein tea to your regimen until you feel better. It does what Mucinex does...but in a natural way. Good luck with feeling better soon!

I agree that being gluten free should improve your immune system. If you have an upper respiratory virus and it continues for much longer or you develop a higher fever or an increase in your other symptoms do check back in with your doctor.

Hello everyone, this my first time to this website and I need some help. I’m 65 years old and have been living with Celiacs for about 15 years. My doctor has suggested I start taking a probiotic named  Integrative Pro-Flora-Concentrae. Has anyone else used this probiotic specifically? If this one isn’t celiac friendly can you recommend another please. Thank you.

If a Celiac person is successful in following a gluten-free diet, they can go into remission.   They may not have a reaction to gluten without a precipitating event like an injury or infection or even emotional or mental stress.   Following a strict gluten-free diet at home, then indulging in gluten containing products abroad without a reaction can be explained by this remission.
