Something Caused This - Not Sure! :(

So I've not posted in a long while. A good thing. It means I'm having no problems.

However I did find that Johnsonville Bratwurst (original) are a HUGE no-no. There's got to be soy in it somewhere. It states on the website that they're gluten free but does NOT state on the packaging that it's gluten free. However nowhere does it state the chances of containing other allergens (like soy) or if it's produced on shared equipment.

ANYways...on to the subject.

Last Monday I thawed out some blueberries for some gluten/soy free blueberry muffins. I religiously use Namaste brand because it just tastes so good and they're allergen free. So no worries. I've made the same muffins several times with no problems. I had no problems this time either.

However. I had a couple cups of blueberries left over. I kept them in the fridge, in a zip lock. I used the remainder Sunday morning for blueberry pancakes. I used Namaste's pancake and waffle mix. It contains nothing different than other mixes I've used by them. I added the same ingredients as I do for their cakes or brownies. I ate almost two whole waffles...bout 5" in diameter - nothing too extreme :) I used pure maple syrup, there was about 1 1/4 cup of it left. I added about two tablespoons of agave nectar for taste and to have enough for me and hubby. I'm not too fond of maple syrup as I grew up using Aunt Jemima and Hungry Jack :) Spoiled to say the least.

Here is the TMI part...

I felt fine all day. Till I went to bed - had some sharp lower ab pains - figured I'd sleep it off. No. I woke up half an hour later at 10:45 with excrutiating pains. I was able to go to the bathroom - TWO bowel movements and then laid down again feeling I might be done. No. Wrong. 5 minutes later more pains. They were BAAAAD. I felt as if I was being stabbed. Needless to say I was in the bathroom till after midnight. I contemplated bringing my pillow into the bathroom like some really bad night of drinking. I was able to go. I will not go into further details. Had D three times before I was able to go to bed, but not without pains that kept me tossing and turning till 5am. This mornind I had D twice - the same as laaate last night. Since about 9am, I've not had ANY movement, but just a constant badly bruised feeling all over my lower abdomen, with occasional sharp pains like I'm about to have to run to the toilet again...but never progresses.

Tonight I ate some plain chicken, carrots and red potato boiled to death in some pure chicken broth. Something warm, solid, and plain to help my system out a bit.

It was definitely either the blueberries OR the agave nectar. I say blueberries because that is what was in the toilet along with bile and whatever. Also because I left them thawed in the fridge from Monday to Sunday. Couldn't they have gone "bad" by then? I thought they'd be fine. Maybe I am wrong. I say the Agave Nectar because I have never used it before and it was something new that was introduced to my system.

So what do you guys think?

I have some blueberry muffins left over. I am seriously considering tossing them for the pure simple fact that the last time I saw blueberries, it was not very appetizing... :/ I think I'd be fine to not consume blueberries for a WHILE.

Oh and hubby is A Ok...no gut probs...NOTHING.

is it possible at all that you may have had any food poisoning recently? or bad eggs?? idk...

if you have Fructose Malabsorption (google it), then Maple Syrup & Agave Nectar could be the culprits.. ALTHO- while fructose can give me STABBING pains and have me doubled over, it doesnt send me to the bathroom for several visits with "D"... it usually just gives me excruciating gas pains, bloating, and feeling like i have a mild bladder infection- but then in the morning, my BM is pretty fantastic...

plus- maple syrup on a gluten-free pancake usually doesnt hurt me like a pear would... but then again- the fructose issue is different from person to person.

im not sure what happened for you, hope you figure it out

Yeah I'm going with basics for a week to get my poor gut right. I DID read somewhere that agave can cause diarrhea. I only found a couple sources, but I don't know if that is hard fact or if it's just something a few people have experienced. Of course it wasn't a gluten-free or celiac website, so it wasn't by someone like us who look at everything through a microscope when we "react" to something.

is it possible at all that you may have had any food poisoning recently? or bad eggs?? idk...

I eat fruits all the time. Strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, blueberries and apples I frequently eat. One of my fav snacks while working is apples and cheese. My husband eats all the same things I do. He is fine. I suppose it is possible that I had a reaction from one of the eggs I ate on Saturday morning. I didn't cook them all the way through because I restocked my fridge with Udis bread and dipped my toast in the yolk. However I do this like once a month anyhow. I simply cannot think of what else it could have been. Like I said, I had two full BM's before the D happened and it had to be whatever I ate that morning. Could I have gotten some sort of food poisoning from the blueberries having been in the fridge for a week after thawing them?

All last night it was a constant bruised feeling - bloated and occasional stabbing pains. I felt as if I would just pass a really huge fart (excuse my term) I'd feel better :D This morning it's a pulsating pain. It goes in and out every couple of seconds. I'm praying for a BM so I can possibly feel better afterwards. I've had some mild gas this morning - nothing foul - no smell at all actually.

As my mom said yesterday, "I hate food"

Well like I said, there was NOTHING regarding it being gluten free ANYwhere on the label of the package of brats I had. Really...nothing at all. I read the thing over and over and even had my husband read it.

"Just read the label" doesn't work for us super sensitives. Too much cc out there. I wish that it were that simple.

I eat fruits all the time. Strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, blueberries and apples I frequently eat. One of my fav snacks while working is apples and cheese. My husband eats all the same things I do.

strawberries, pineapple, melons, blueberries dont bother anyone with FM because the sucrose content is equal to or greater than the fructose content. apples, however do usually affect people with fructose malabsorption- altho- sometimes i can get away with a small apple... but a pear or a date- forget it.

and everyone with fructose issues has different reactions to the foods on the list. im usually ok with maple syrup on a gluten-free treat. BUT maple & agave are high on the list.

Thank you for your input. I'm thinking this might be the culprit seeing as how it's been probably a year since I've had maple syrup...then on top of that never having agave till Sunday. Sooo it makes a lot of sense.

I'll be doing some more research on it. If need be when my gut is better, I'll reintroduce it (in a much smaller amount) to see if I have some of the same effects. I suppose it's worth figuring out.

Sounds like food poisoning to me - did you have nausea as well? :( A glutening will send me to the loo several times, but not keeping at it until stomach contents come out the other side!

Bad food can take a while to actually cause symptoms, up to a day or two later for certain bacterial contamination. The 2 or 3 times I've had food poisoning, it was between 4 and 8 hours after the offending food, and exactly as you described - starts suddenly, and continues mercilessly until you're empty! What did you have for lunch/breakfast? You can get food poisoning from lots of random stuff - potato salad, lettuce (Salmonella contamination), spinach at salad bars that haven't been kept chilled.

I don't think it would be the blue berries... were they left thawed outside of the fridge for a few hours? If they were always in the fridge then I'd say they were pretty safe.

this is true too! i got salmonella years ago- and it took about 10-12 hours to hit me

They stayed IN the fridge. They weren't left out for any period of time except during thawing - but in the sink in water, in a zip lock bag.

Well I made spaghetti sauce - all homemade and no chance of glutening or contamination or food poisoning there. I made that Friday night. We ate that for dinner. Saturday morning I had two eggs over medium with homemade hashbrowns (I shredded the potato myself) and Udi's bread for toast to dip in the egg yolk. Hubby had an egg white omelette that I also made. He pretty much eats gluten free when he's at home except for his occasional beer. Saturday afternoon I had left over spaghetti. No chance of a glutening there either. Saturday night I made some pan-fried chicken. No glutening or food poisoning there - the chicken was fully cooked. I made broccoli with that. I eat enough broccoli I'm surprised I'm not growing sprouts. Chicken is a staple. Umm Sunday morning is when I made the blueberry pancakes. I'd made muffins with the same batch of blueberries last Wednesday. They were in the fridge the whole time. Sunday afternoon I had left over spaghetti. Sunday night I had chicken with steamed asparagus and boiled red potatoes. I can't think of anything that I would have gotten poisoned from, so the fructose malabsorption sounds more like what I may have encountered since maple syrup and agave nectar are new to my system. I've not had maple syrup in about a year. Never have had agave. I mentioned this before too

I am sorry to say that I've still not figured it out. I was going to reintroduce my system to the agave nectar this weekend, but Thursday night I attended a military ball with my husband and I ate a plate of food prepared by the hotel kitchen staff...plain. However SOMEthing in that plate got me. I was having the same exact symptoms the night after as I did when I ate those pancakes with the blueberries and agave/maple syrup.

So I might can conclude that I most likely got glutened. Same exact symptoms with sensitive, bubbly, tender feeling gut the next day. I was thinking that it was from toasting my gluten free bread in the toaster. However I just learned that the reubens my husband was preparing for me months prior, he was toasting my bread in the toaster and I had no symptoms. Soooooo...I have no earthly clue what got me. No clue.

I have been losing weight since then too...7 lbs total. Then last week I developed swollen glands under my arms...three in my right and two in my left with extreme tenderness and pain. On amoxycillin till Tuesday. I guess my body just went haywire.

Hope you feel better soon. I still haven't tried the Madhava, but I did order some and take a little taste. It's good.

      Hello, no I had to have them re done and then used a liner over the top.  Many dentists are not aware of the celiac effects.  Best of luck.   There is other material, yet, very expensive.

      He is not just a psychiatrist.  He is also a neuroscientist.  And yes, I have already read those studies.   I agree with benfotiamine.  This is short term while glutened/inflammation occurs.  As I had already mentioned, these symptoms no longer exist when this phase passes.  And yes, I know that celiac is a disease of malnutrition.  We are working with a naturopath.
