Good Doctor Near Gaithersburg, Md

I am tired of my doctor brushing me off and (probably) thinking I'm a hypochondriac. She also has a very busy practice and isn't good about following through after the initial visit. Plus, it is HARD to get a same day appointment with her even if I really am very ill. I started the gluten-free diet and I feel worlds better. I want to look for a doctor who is sympathetic to this "self-diagnosis" and is willing to work with me (I.E. prescribe things that are gluten free, etc). Does anyone know of any good doctors in the Gaithersburg, MD area? I would be willing to travel as far as DC if need be (15-20 mi radius) but would prefer a doctor whose practice is closer.

Edit: I just want to make a note, I'm talking about my General Practicioner here. Not a specialist.

Hi,

I live (normally) in DC, and posted on a similar topic recently.

Someone replied to me that: "There is a celiac clinic at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Dr Alessio Fassano is the head of that clinic and is well known in the celiac world. There is also a nutritionist named Cheryl Harris in Alexandria who works with celiac patients."

This likely does not answer your request for a Celiac-sympathetic general practitioner. If such a being exists, I would not know!

Celiac disease is relatively new, and from my observations so far, I feel lucky just to know that a physician has even *heard* of it. In my own case, my (DC) doctor diagnosed me based on a similar set of symptoms a relative of his was having. So I guess we have the relative's doctor to thank! And my doctor for paying attention. I don't really think he has much knowledge beyond that, though. Not about nutrition, cross-contamination, etc. I'm just glad I was showing symptoms.

Dr. Daphna Henkin in Olney, MD just recently diagnosed me. I wouldn't say I am 100% happy and there office gave me a very badly skewed message on which supplements I should be taking - but in general, she is very good. I might be going to see a GI soon and if you I will let you know who and how is goes....best of luck!

@fatjacksonthecat I have been doing some digging about the topic of nicotine and celiac.  I came across many studies that showed that the nicotine patch helped many with long covid and chronic fatigue syndrome.  I have a son who was diagnosed with celiac and his symptoms are severe when he is glutened.  He shows a lot of neurological inflammation and suffered with fatigue, brain fog, depression, anxiety and insomnia. There have been studies revealing that nicotine smoke actually masking celiac symptoms.  I also read that microdosing with a nictoine patch prevents one from addiction.  We are currently trying this out and so far it has lifted the brain fog and helped with anxiety and mood.  One of the studies I have read showed that it's not so much the dose, but the length of time a person is on the patch that showed improvements.  Many showed significant improvement as early as week 3 and continued through week 12.  We are taking 3 day breaks in between to make sure we don't down regulate the nicotine receptors.   How have things been for you?  Are you still chewing nicotine gum?  Perhaps, try the patch?  And how long did it take to ease up on your symptoms when glutened?

Hi @KathyR37 and a very warm welcome here.  I am so very sorry that you are going through all of this. I just wanted to check, have you ever been tested for any other gastrointestinal conditions? Cristiana

@KathyR37, I would suspect that in addition to gluten intolerance, you have other food intolerances/sensitivities. This is very common in the celiac community. The most common offenders are oats, dairy, soy, corn and eggs with dairy and oats being the big two. Have you considered this? Have you tried keeping a food diary to detect patterns?

thank you for your advice.   I have always taken them and I use Stonehedge because they are in a glass bottle, but don't have to be refrigerated.  I also like they are 3rd party tested and state gluten free. But you never know if something better has come alone over the years.

Thank you for your response. I have already learned about the info you sent but i appreciate your effort. I am the only one in my family cursed by this disease. I have to cook for them too. I make sure that my utensils are free of gluten and clean after using them for other food. I use non-porous pots and pans and  gloves when cooking for them. One huge problem I have is a gag reflex out of this world and if something doesn't taste good it is not going down. Most commercially made breads and such taste like old cardboard.Pastas are about the same. I did find one flour that I like and use it regularly, but it is so expensive! All gluten free food is way more expensive. I only eat twice a day because I cannot afford to buy all that. We live on a very low income so my food purchases are quite limited.
