Tired From Corn?

Anyone have food reactions where the only sign is tiredness? It seems like the day after I eat corn I can't seem to get moving in the morning. I have no other reaction at all, only the fatigue. Gluten definitely makes me tired, but I get a bunch of other symptoms that can include GI distress, mouth ulcers, and anxiety. Back when I did the elimination diet, I would always get a stomach ache from foods I couldn't tolerate. Does anyone else have this happen?

By the way the corn food was Fritos so I can't rule out CC but I'm not sure I'm that sensitive right now. I have been sometimes.

Oh sorry. I guess this should have gone in the other intolerances section... maybe a mod can move it.

Till it gets moved:

I notice much better energy levels when avoiding every single grain. The only one that doesn't seem to cause any sort of energy leeching is white rice in small amounts (but I don't even eat that now).

I am having a fatigue reaction today as well, but I am not sure if it is from corn or from yeast. I had some gluten free tortillas yesterday, and some gluten free baked goods with yeast in them.

Thanks for moving this, mod squad!

I'm glad it's not just me with a fatigue reaction. It's the kind of thing where you wonder "Is this in my head?"

This is what my kiddo reported as a symptom when we re-introduced corn after eliminating it for a while, based on allergy testing. He also had allergy shiners-dark circles under his eyes.

For more than two years, I battled fatigue. I dragged through the day. Some of it was low iron, but the other missing piece was the discovery (through blood tests) that I was highly allergic to eggs. Once I eliminated them I'm proud to say I can stay up past 8:00 p.m.! My husband is happy now too because i can actually stay awake when he pops in a movie. He says I'm like a new wife now :P

Thanks so much for all the stories. I guess I'll try cutting out corn and a challenge on a day when I can sleep in if necessary. B) At least it isn't an awful reaction - just one I'd prefer to avoid.

I've been in contact with Enterolab about getting some tests done... After the first of the year Enterolab hopes to be adding many more foods to their testing menu, including corn...

I don't think fecal IgA is well enough established as a testing method. Just because it's scientifically feasible does not automatically give it clinical meaning. I might look into RAST.

Do you know if you have the same reaction to organic corn?

dilettantesteph Collaborator

I think that just tiredness could be from low level gluten contamination. If so, and you continued to eat the stuff, your other symptoms would start too after time went on and the levels build up. I'm sure you know to try very clean corn for a trial, like corn on the cob you shuck yourself. I have found wheat in my bulk corn. There are shared fields, harvesting, storage and transportation issues.

Good question. That's easy enough to test, although my understanding is that GMO corn and pesticides are in organic products more often than not.

I thought of that too and I can't rule it out, especially since the most recent corn thing I maybe reacted to was Fritos. I can't get corn on the cob this time of year but I could buy some frozen corn, pick through it, and wash it well before I cook it.

If something is more than a little contaminated washing well doesn't work. I guess it would depend on what you mean by well. I do triple washes with soap. Even if you get a positive result that way, you might want to try corn on the cob when it becomes available to be sure. I know I couldn't eat Fritos, and I can eat corn.

I found at Disney springs and Disney they have specialist that when told about dietary restrictions they come and talk to you ,explain cross contamination measures tsken and work with you on choices. Its the one place I dont worry once I've explained I have celiac disease.  Thier gluten free options are awesome.

Have you tried Pure Encapsulations supplements? This is a brand my doctor recommends for me. I have no issues with this brand.

plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗
