What Is The Physiology Of Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance?

I am not sure whether I have celiac disease or just gluten intolerance. I had a fairly high Igg score, but Ttg,IgA normal. Didn't have a biopsy prior to going gluten free. I have read a lot about the body's reaction to gluten if you have celiac, but what about just plain intolerance? What happens? If anyone has any good links to medical studies, that would be great. I know what symptoms people display with intolerance. I am wondering about what is actually going on in your body to cause the reaction. Is it also some sort of immune response?

I saw this article earlier today. It looks like the damage goes on whether you're formally diagnosed or not. The gluten-free diet seems to be imperative for "potential" celiacs. I would think this includes those who are gluten intolerant.

Best Regards,

Thank you for the links. I copied and pasted part of one article, and sent it to my mother and sister, both of whom could benefit from testing and a gluten free life, at least IMHO. They're both resistant to change, even though my mom is pretty desperate for pain relief from a couple of different immune based illnesses.

Seems to me that eliminating an inflammation producer from the body can only be helpful, but and again, that's just IMHO  , which doesn't always carry much weight with the family. It's their decision, but info to send them might help!

Peace, Beth.

Not sure if this has been posted on this forum before, but this quite informed blogger believes gluten intolerance can be caused by the immune system, outside of the antibody mechanism. It's based on the NK immune cells reacting to gluten directly.

Thank you Marz for a very informative link that has given me a lot of food for thought (if not for my body) :P I have been interested in NK cells for some time and this adds to my interest. I need MORE!!!

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!

Welcome @Martha Mitchell, I too would like to know more about your prior lenses, and especially about the potential of gluten in lenses. In theory this should not harm most celiacs, as the autoimmune reaction normally begins in the gut, however, in those who are super sensitive or have dermatitis herpetiformis it may be a potential issue.

It's most likely going to be a celiac disease diagnosis based on your blood test results, but wait for your doctor to give you a green light for going gluten-free, as they may want to do additional testing. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
