i'm just going to get straight to the point-

i really need some help finding out how i can get tested for celiac disease. my dad told me that my aunt has a problem with gluten, but she was never formally diagnosed and i figured i could turn to people who know more about this disease. I i have many of the common symptoms. i've had them for as long and i can remember and im so tired of it. i just found out that i have a problem with my knees and the anti-inflammatory pills my doctor gave me just arent helping the pain. i also have pain in other joints but this doctor only specializes in lower extremties. i wanted to see if the pain was gluten related before going along with a surgery.

my mom is really busy right now so i can't ask her for help, so i would REALLY appreciate it if someone could give me some advice about where to start.

You could start with a endo with at least three biopsies. The celiac bloodwork...Stay on wheat & gluten or the testing will not be accurate.... You could be just gluten sensitive& not have celiac disease where a person has damge to their villi... That's a good thing ......in the end either way the only help for either illness is a full gluten-free diet for life.

You need to get a Celiac Panel Test:

Total IGA

Tgg

EMA

DGP IgA

DGP IgG

There is one other test that is older than the DGP test but I'm not sure of the name but it is very similiar in name. Be aware that you may test positive on only one of the tests. Total IgA is to see if you are IgA deficient. My daughter tested positive only on the DGP tests. Less is written about these two tests as they are much newer. The name of the test is Deamidated Gliadin Peptide. Also, be aware you can be negative on these tests and still have a positive biopsy. False positives seem to be quite rare from what I've read but false negatives are quite common. Even if you are not celiac that does not preclude gluten intolerant. Gluten intolerant individuals seem to have many of the same symptoms as those who are Celiac. You do not want to go on a Gluten Free Diet prior to testing because it effects the results.

Hope this helps. Best wishes.

See your physician, and on this forum read read read, and take people's advice, and get the most complete panel recommended. INSIST ON IT with your physician, as he/she may try to downplay it, if unfamiliar or unexposed to Celiac. Insist on it.

Do research, read, and then write it down and take it into your physician and insist on that specific test being done.

Then, if it comes back high in antibodies, or if it looks like you have Celiac, a common next step is the intestinal biopsy.

But first things first, insist on as comprehensive a test as possible. And read here about what that is.

Oh, and as someone else said, DO continue eating gluten. Otherwise, you won't get an accurate reading.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I found myself giggling with happiness as I read how your body reached such spring! And I hope that your current journey is also successful!! Definitely starting the food diary! So many amazing advices. And it’s very scary. It really hits all our soft spots as well as our confidence system. Most doctors I went thought I was underage despite being in my late 20s. Right now I look like am I twelve, but is also this body that’s taking so much, so I might as well love it too! Going to make the necessary changes and stay in this path. Thank you again! 🫶

Thank you so much for the information and kind message! Reading this transformed how I’ve been viewing my efforts and progress. Guess there’s still a lot to celebrate and also heal 😌  Yes, I’ve been taking it! Just recently started taking a multivitamin supplement and separated vitamin D! I also took chewable Iron polymaltose for ferritin deficiency 2 months ago but was unable to absorb any of it.  Thank you again! Hearing such gentle words from the community makes my body and heart more patient and excited for the future.

Your post demonstrates the profound frustration and isolation that so many in the Celiac community feel, and I want to thank you for channeling that experience into advocacy. The medical gaslighting you endured for decades is an unacceptable and, sadly, a common story, and the fact that you now have to "school" your own GI specialist speaks volumes about the critical lack of consistent and updated education. Your idea to make Celiac Disease a reportable condition to public health authorities is a compelling and strategic one. This single action would force the system to formally acknowledge the prevalence and seriousness of the disease, creating a concrete dataset that could drive better research funding, shape medical school curricula, and validate the patient experience in a way that individual stories alone often cannot. It is an uphill battle, but contacting representatives, as you have done with Adam Gray, is exactly how change begins. By framing it as a public health necessity—a matter of patient safety and protection from misdiagnosis and neglect—you are building a powerful case. Your voice and your perseverance, forged through thirty years of struggle, are exactly what this community needs to ensure that no one else has to fight so hard just to be believed and properly cared for.
