Need Dessert Ideas

Hi -

We are having some friends over this weekend for a BBQ. Their son (age 5) and my son (3) have different food intolerances and I'm trying to think of an easy, kid friendly dessert that will work for everyone. My son can't have gluten and only limited dairy, their son can't do nuts or chocolate. Most of my go-to dessert recipes have nuts or chocolate in them.

Any ideas?

Individual pavlovas would work - they are also beautiful and fun (not to mention delicious). Have you considered gourmet popsicles or granita? Homemade marshmallows are fun and kid friendly, too. They are cool toasted!

foodgawker.com has tons of ideas w/ great pics. I have found you must type gluten-free to see all of them! That hypen means everything! Good luck to a great picnic. Apples with different "dips" made from other fruits goes well around here with that age group. Kids love to decorate!

How about Betty Crocker gluten free yellow cake mix cupcakes. The frostings are gluten and dairy free too. You could serve that with some fruit. There are no butter instructions on the betty crocker website.

Jello Jigglers . . . and use cookie cutters to cut out fun shapes.

Just saw the cutest meatballs with swirled mashed potatoes on top,

made to look like cupcakes. Very cute and oh so healthy! Kids are

so much fun to cook for!

Pudding (vanilla, butterscotch, etc), tapioca (I make mine with coconut milk and put berries or baked apple slices and cinnamon on top), dairy free ice cream, berry pies, sugar cookies.

Hope that helps to at least get you brain-storming :D I wish you luck!

Just thought of something else cute and fun. Someone mentioned jello jigglers which triggered my memory. For my Sunday School class I used to make blue jello in clear cups and when the jello was nearly set I inserted gummy worms and blue whales to replicate tiny aquariums. The kids loved it! You could even have your jello setting up and the kids could complete it themselves.

LOVE that idea. Just copied and pasted in my files.

Thanks, everyone! The gluten-free Betty Crocker recipe triggered my memory that I have the Gluten Free Cake Mix Doctor Cookbook, so I used that as a base and made the peach cupcakes. Huge hit - sent some home with them. I did not know that there are gluten-free rice krispies now - that's going to have to be my next experiment b/c that's something I can make at the last minute and send to school with him.

You all are so awesome - I really appreciate your help.

LOVE that idea. Just copied and pasted in my files.

It is cute, isn't it? At times I even added green shoestring licorice to mimic seaweed. :)

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
