Acid Reflux Is This A Symptom

I get really bad acid reflux just before pains in my stomach start usually after eating pastries, bread ,chocolate pasta

also after eating peppers and tomatoes especially when they are cooked,After eating pretzels i get an urge to vomit that then seems to trigger about a week of my stomach only being able to handle rice chicken and vegetables also lower back ache and pain in my stomach....I have had 2 days off work this week due to all of this and only after about 5 days am i starting to feel a little better.....

Do i need to go gluten free

Acid reflux sometimes ONLY resolves itself with a gluten free diet, according to some sources. I'd say, working through your doctor, try it for four weeks and see how you feel.

I would at least recommend getting tested done before you try gluten free. Blood test include: IgA/IgG tTG, IgA/IgG DPG, IgA/IgG gliadin antibodies and a total IgA. You also could choose to have an EGD done with duodenal biopsies(minimum 8) to look for celiac. They also look for other things too. Some people are comfortable going gluten free based on blood work only. Testing can have about 20-30% false negative rates. If a diagnosis is not important then trial gluten free for a good three months to see if you have improvement. Then you can challenge yourself with gluten to see what your reaction is. There are some practioners that will diagnose based on elimination. Know that if you later choose to do testing you will have to go back on gluten for a min. of three months to have the best chance of accurate testing.

Heartburn can be a symptom of celiac. It was my main GI symptom. I had others but I had them all my life and "thought" it was normal. It was the first symptom to improve gluten free. I will get a recurrance of heartburn/reflux if I get glutened.

Before I went gluten free my symptoms were: heart burn, ingestion and vomiting all at the same time.....I felt like I was going to die. These symptoms lasted until all the gluten was out of my body. (this I only realised in hindsight). This went on for four months. I actually began to think that I must have pancreatic cancer. Then my daughter was diagnosed as a celiac, and being a mother I thought I would research celiac disease. Low and behold I find myself reading about gluten intolerance and it hit me........ this is me. From that moment I went gluten free and I have never had a symptom since.

I had 7 years of acid reflux that responded poorly to Prilosec. It got absolutely unbearable in the months before getting my somewhat murky celiac diagnosis. Resolved after 2 days on the gluten free diet. Now, reflux is my 'early warning sign' that I've had a low-level exposure to gluten.

I would recommend you go to your Dr. ASAP and ask for the gluten panel blood test. Your Dr. can advise you from there.

Yes..acid reflux can mean Celiac, but there can be other causes as well.

I had it bad for several years. I went on various RX meds and one by one they quit working. Once going gluten-free it stopped.

Now if I accidently get cc it's the first symptom to return.

      Hey @Butch68, I also have dermatitis herpetiformis but don't suffer from it anymore. I used to drink Guinness too but I drink Cider now when out on social occasions. I assume you are in Ireland or the UK. If it's any good to you ... 9 White Deer based in Cork brew a range of gluten-free products including a gluten-free Stout. I'm not sure if they are certified though. https://www.9whitedeer.ie/ I haven't come across any certified gluten-free stouts this side of the pond.

      This is a very common question, and the most important thing to know is that no, Guinness is not considered safe for individuals with coeliac disease. While it's fascinating to hear anecdotes from other coeliacs who can drink it without immediate issues, this is a risky exception rather than the rule. The core issue is that Guinness is brewed from barley, which contains gluten, and the standard brewing process does not remove the gluten protein to a level safe for coeliacs (below 20ppm). For someone like you who experiences dermatitis herpetiformis, the reaction is particularly significant. DH is triggered by gluten ingestion, even without immediate gastrointestinal symptoms. So, while you may not feel an instant stomach upset, drinking a gluten-containing beer like Guinness could very well provoke a flare-up of your skin condition days later. It would be a gamble with a potentially uncomfortable and long-lasting consequence. Fortunately, there are excellent, certified gluten-free stouts available now that can provide a safe and satisfying alternative without the risk.

      Before being diagnosed coeliac I used to love Guinness. Being made from barley it should be something a coeliac shouldn’t drink. But taking to another coeliac and they can drink it with no ill effects and have heard of others who can drink it too.  is this everyone’s experience?  Can I drink it?  I get dermatitis herpetiformis and don’t get instant reactions to gluten so can’t try it to see for myself.

      NCGS does not cause damage to the small bowel villi so, if indeed you were not skimping on gluten when you had the antibody blood testing done, it is likely you have celiac disease.
