Celiac & Fertility

So, I'm sure there is a lot of information on here & other discussions about this... but I'm really needing some encouragement to stay positive and be patient more than anything.

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for 3 months now. I've been charting my cycle & we've had very regular sex (every 1-2 days) before, during, and around the time of ovulation.

I haven't been on any birth control for 2 years & 3 months (since my celiac disease dx). I'm extremely careful about gluten and cc, and haven't been glutened in a very long time. I'm taking prenatal vitamins, I've abstained completely from alcohol, and have kept my caffeine intake down to either one cup of coffee per day, or two mugs of tea per day maximum. I am active, eat healthy, exercise regularly, don't smoke, etc. My husband is also healthy and we're both relatively young (I'm 28 and he's 31).

I know these things take time, but each month I've been so "sure" I'm pregnant, and then the HPT is negative and I'm seriously disappointed. :( I can't figure out what, if anything, we're doing wrong ... or if I just need to relax and be patient (which is probably the most likely thing).

But if anyone does have any tips for increasing fertility, I'm all ears!! (or eyes )

Thanks

:)

Edited to add: My last test of ttg levels were nil, so I haven't had any contact as of that time, and my last vitamin panel (which was right before we started trying to conceive 3 months ago) was perfectly normal.

Robitussin. Check and see if it's gluten-free.

Take it as you approach ovulation, stop after you know you ovulated. Increases cervical mucus.

And 3 months really is just the beginning - I hit it on 11 months. When I gave up. And took Robitissin.

And have a drink.

Just 1.

Interesting! When I googled Robitussin & cervical mucous, I found this: Open Original Shared Link

I wonder if this product is gluten-free! Open Original Shared Link

Has anyone ever taken it?

Thanks for the info :)

3 months is a very short time. I would not start to worry until it's been a year or more. Are you using the methods in the book "Taking Charge of your fertility" to chart your cycle? You can learn a lot from that book if you have not read it yet.

tarnalberry Community Regular

3 months is not long. IIRC, it takes about 6months for 60% of couples to conceive. (90% by 9 months of trying.) So be patient. If you're just using OPK's for checking ovulation, do try charting to help you see if you can learn any more - and get more advanced notice on ovulation, for many women.

JillianLindsay Enthusiast

Thanks, a friend just recommended that book for me and it is on order from chapters online (I am at a conference right now and can't go shopping for it). I also have just started to track using their online calendars at Open Original Shared Link

Thanks

Also, what about charting basal body temperature?

I charted bbt, watched mucus....

In the end I knew the cm was the problem (if it wasn't endometriosis).

I also had TCOYF. Great book.

JillianLindsay Enthusiast

Thanks! I'll start tracking my bbt too when I'm home from this conference ;)

Also, got a helpful & quick response from service@early-pregnancy-tests.com

"Hi there,

Thank you for your note. The Fertilaid for Women is gluten free, however the FertileCM is deemed as not.

Please let me know if you have any further questions!

Thanks,

Everyone I know who struggled to get pregnant (3 mos, 6 mos, 2 yrs+ of trying) all had a lot of success when they just said, F*** it, I'm not going to think about it this month. I'm just going to relax and not chart anything, etc etc.

And yes, have a drink. Or two. ;)

The month I gave up (it was a December) I thought, what the heck, and had me lots o' eggnog with rum. Also had some wine with dinner. Found out shortly after Christmas I was preggers.

Yep, there is such a thing as 'trying too hard' ;)

Thanks folks. Another "miss" this month, but I have purchased some Robitussin and a digital ovulation kit. I also relaxed and had a drink and plan to have more fun with it this month!

Oh yes, try to have fun! I know it's ridiculous to tell you to relax, so I won't. But DO have fun!!!

Another disappointment :(

I have read that maca root can help boost fertility, has anyone tried this? Anyone know of a macasure product that is gluten-free?

Thanks

Update:

I got pregnant in January, and miscarried (chemical pregnancy) at 5 weeks on Jan. 31st :(

Then, just yesterday I found out I'm pregnant again!

Fingers crossed this one is a sticky, sticky bean. I've read that 85% of pregnancies following an early m/c go to full-term, so the stats are on our side!

:D

Hang in there and think positive. A previous poster with miscarriages recently gave birth to twins, so I'm sending you similar multiple good thoughts. :P:)

plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗

I agree there I've tryed this myself to prove I can't eat gluten or lactose and it sets me back for about a month till I have to go back to being very strict to settle again
    • trents
You may also need to supplement with B12 as this vitamin is also involved in iron assimilation and is often deficient in long-term undiagnosed celiac disease.
