Hi -

We're going to visit my sister in Washington DC. She tells me that there are a lot of gluten free bakeries. It is ridiculous how excited I am since the one where I live closed a while back.

Does anyone have a favorite they can recommend?

I second Sweet Sin! There's a little cafe in Bethesda, Lilit, that carries a lot of their desserts and other goodies. You can get a great lunch or dinner there. They're quick to tell you if you need to know if something has other allergens in it, as well, or if they can make something with a substitution. They carry gluten-free beer.

There is apparently a cupcake place near where the Capitals play that have amazing gluten free cupcakes. Someone was telling me about this recently and of course I forget the name of the place already.

As far as I know there is no exclusively gluten free bakery in this area. Sweet Sin is in Baltimore. Lillit in Bethesda, MD does sell their products, as do most Whole Foods. Heidelberg Bakery in Arlington, VA has a WONDERFUL chocolate raspberry cake that's gluten free, but the bakery isn't. Some of the other local bakeries will have some gluten free products. But of course you take your chances with them since there's an awful lot of regular flour flying around.

Now, if someone knows of a bakery that's 100% gluten free in this area please, PLEASE tell me I'm wrong! :P

(my parents live in Pittsburgh and I always go to Gluuteny while I'm there.)

It is called Red Velvet Cupcakery. Also, Cake Love, is another cupcake place that has gluten-free cupcakes. Cake Love's vegan cupcakes are also gluten-free (the icing part is vegan but the cake is gluten-free).

There is going to be a gluten-free bakery opening up in Alexandria (Del Ray). Open Original Shared Link

I don't think it has opened yet though.

DC does not have a gluten free bakery.

The guy who started Cake Love, Warren Brown, used to have another very nice bakery across the street (on U) maybe it was called Love Cafe where it was very civilized, you could go in and sit down. He was featured in many magazines and Fox News Sunday even. Now Love Cafe is gone, and all that's left of Warren Brown (of DC) in DC is this tiny cramped, awkward Cake Love that more times than not, does not have gluten-free cupcakes. I know - I stop by there regularly.

As someone who's lived here a very long time, DC is disappointing. Well, it's just not that good a food town to begin with (too many singles in a hurry) and for gluten-free options, it's a struggle. I'm sick of it.

Suburbs are a different story.

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.

Thanks very interesting I have to see if I should take these 2 vitamins along with my multi and super Vit B complex or if its too much or would hurt me. I don't have any other health issues but would love to see if this improves anything especially to feel stronger build muscle.
