Let's Talk About Poop For A Minute.

I'm just wondering if I'm "normal" or if there is something else that I should be thinking about here. Does this sound familiar?

When I have to go, it's very uncomfortable bordering on painful and I have to go NOW. There is no waiting a few minutes. If I'm downstairs on the computer and the urge hits I have to sprint upstairs to the bathroom. I also go on average 3 times a day, give or take.

Now, I'm not in the habit of discussing poop with my friends and relatives but I get the impression that it's not like this for everybody.

Oh yep, you just described me to a tee...... From the time the urge starts, I have at most 10 seconds to make it to the can or else...... Also, my collagenous colitis is quite nocturnal and wakes me up around 2 a.m. and I am up going constantly until around 6 a.m. until it settles down then I usually doze on the couch till the kids get up......

One of the things I love most about this group is that I come away feelilng normal! Sounds very familar.

Wandering Hermit Contributor

Well ever since going gluten-free I go once a day, and it happens about 30 mins after my morning coffee, and when the need strikes, it is a very urgent one. Better go or else!

But about 1/10 days, I am constipated for the day and go later in the afternoon.

Usually the constipated days it is a more normalish stool. In the AM, when it is urgent, it tends to be loose and kind of messy.

Something else is that the messy ones require a lot of TP and that in turns irritates the skind down there and it itches all day!!! Horrible! My doc said I dont have hemmorhoids but it sure hurts down there. I have found that using water to clean up helps.

mytummyhurts Contributor

Yep, this sounds like me too. Before I went gluten-free sometimes I would have to go and I had to go right now! Of course, this always seemed to happen when we were driving. Had some interesting public restroom experiences. At least I made it to the bathroom though, one time my mom didn't. She hasn't been diagnosed with celiac disease, but I think she has it.

I also continue to experience very painful bowel movements, even just today. It feels like somebody's dragging razor blades through my intestines.

Jeepster Apprentice

My wife used to tease me about my urgency in having to go to the bathroom in the morning - like, RIGHT NOW! GET OUT OF MY WAY! It made for some embarrassing breakfast dates at the local diner before our engagement. Now with my diagnosis, she never says a word, understanding it is a symptom that I suffer with. I also eat a "mini" breakfast before we ever go out, and that usually gets the first flow of stool out of me before having to sit down to a real meal.

What I am curious about in describing the poop is this - how many celiac disease sufferers have burning, horrible smelling poop that stings on the way out, especially in the morning? And is this a by-productive of incomplete digestion, as I am guessing it is?

jenvan Collaborator

Abby-- Wow, should it be hurting that bad? Is it an abdominal pain or a rectum type pain? (Sorry--rectum is a gross word :)

I go pretty much every morning. Unfortunately we only have one bathroom and the timing works out so that my husband is in the shower when I have to go. We have a strict "no-pooping-in-another's-presence" policy, so I always say "I have to go!" And his reply is "I'll be out in a few minutes..." He doesn't know a few minutes can be like an eternity! (He takes loooong showers : )

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not crazy about it and only have in front of my husband when there's no option, but he doesn't seem to have a problem going in front of me! But he usually waits until I get in the shower, which gives some semblance of privacy.

I have been having bad IBS for about 3 weeks now, mainly constipation, and mucus which I always take as a bad sign. And yes, raw butt from the cheap TP at work. I keep thinking about sneaking in some Charman Ultra or something but I don't need anymore attention drawn to me at work!

And, sorry all, but the mucus lately has been, uh, orange, rather than regular mucus color. I don't know what that means but certainly my gut has been having deep aches in it lately. I don't know if I'm eating gluten - don't think so because I haven't had any emotional outbursts, but don't know what to think at this point.

You know, it's a little intimidating writing this stuff knowing my big smiling face will be posted next to it.

LOL!! Now we ALL know!

I know I haven't been getting gluten, this is just the way it goes. Before going gluten-free it was way worse, and not only that but the stools were NOT good. Now the only real problem is the discomfort and the urgency to go, but I guess it isn't really a problem after all.

(now my dogs will be humiliated by this post)

glutenfreeheather Rookie

That sounds exactly like me before I went gluten-free! I would have to go RIGHT THEN and if I didn't I felt so sick and my lower abdomen HURT! I would have to get to a bathroom and be completely alone. My poor hubby learned to just let me be if this happened. I also would get very short with others if I was en route to a bathroom during one of these "attacks".

Praise the Lord that is OVER!!!

Stephanie-

No worries...I'm down with the mucous and what not. I've had the orange before too :) The no pooping policy is strictly enforced by my husband who is heniously grossed-out at the mere thought that I would do such a thing in his presence. Which is funny to me b/c his mom went through this weird phase of colon cleansing where she LITERALLY saved all of her poop in jars to show people. ...I'm not joking... but I guess that is another story for another time.... :o

PS--Cheap tp sucks. But good news for you--there are travel rolls of charmin available! My mom bought me some once for Christmas! Ha ha!

I honestly didn't think anything in this thead could shock me but I read the part about poop in jars and I quickly sat back in my chair and my jaw dropped! Wow! Now that's poop-obsessed!

Not fond of the orange stuff. I don't think I've seen that before. I keep wracking my brains - did I have carrot juice recently? No... I did have some butternut squash but that was about 6 days ago...

Oh, don't you just LOVE the fact we stare at our poop? Scandalous! :D

Stephanie

Wandering Hermit Contributor

Since we are on a roll here (get it? on a ROLL?) I will ask another gross question - does anyone have the stuff that seems to come out more or less ok but in the bowl just kind of disintegrates? This morning little pieces of it were breaking off and floating up to the top. What on earth is going on with that?

I hope there is a day someday when I can stop looking at this stuff.

Mjohnson73 Apprentice

wow...I thought I was the only one that stares at her poop and evalutates it LOL

:P

I also have the floaty type, and the really loose ones and I don't know if it is cause I am still being glutenated somewhere or if it is just cause my body is still not free of all the gluten that I had been eating... (I have been gluten-free for about a month now)...

luckily we don't have that "no-pooping-in-anothers-prescence policy" since I don't know if I could deal with that...I just go when I need to go... and my hubby knows that if I am starting to run to the bathroom, he knows... 1. to get out of my way.... 2. if I am in there a while, he will come check on me cause a lot of times when I am going a lot, I tend to get the shakes and he gives me water to drink and puts a cold wash cloth on the back of my neck... (yep this supportive hubby is the same one that i was complaining about not putting my son on the gluten-free diet in other posts)...

Jeepster: I also have that "stinging" icky smelling poop in the morning.... not sure why...

Hello Fellow Celiac "Poopers"!!!!

I was so happy to read this conversation because I have all of the same problems!!!! Lately Ive been constipated and cant go for days...then when I do its like a semi-violent diarea celiac attack!!!! Its soooo weird. Too my knowledge, I havent been knowingly putting gluten into my stomach. But then again I never feel quite "right" and usually suspect gluten (I eat out alot). However, there are some days where I cant go, cant go, and then BOOM!!!!! :o ...it hits me and Im doubling over on the bowl. Does anyone have that problem?

I have that "mucous" you mentioned.....why does this happen? What does it mean (besides having to shower 3X that day!!!)?

We joke in my family and boyfriend that when I have to go.....STAY FAR AWAY!!!!! YOU DONT WANT TO COME NEAR, OR ELSE!!!!!!!!!

Heres another funny one-----if Im with my boyfriend, hanging out, doing whatever (where theres a bathroom we share) he has this habit of waiting for me to come out of the BR, then going in to take a pee. So? Whats the problem with that? He is not innocently doing this.....because////I always ask him before I go in if he has to go first. To which he replies NO!!! But then he does!! It makes me crazy!:angry::angry: Whats the fascination all about?????? LOL

Heres to healthy pooping........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D:P:);)B)

Guest Viola

I've solved the smelly problem with 'green apple' Lysol spray ... for some reason the nice smell of green apple covers it when nothing else will. Who knew

And we are fotunate to have two bathrooms now. It really was awful before when we only had one :o

Corrine Rookie

I am now 'regular' with once a day sometimes up to 3x. I have had or do have all of the above. Now what I'm thinking is, this is what normal is. Comparing notes and it seems to me that the rest of the world is not normal and we are. What do you think of that?

JLK Rookie

No one has chimed in from the other side so I'll speak first for celiac with chronic constipation. All my life, hard poops and hard to poop. Pellets of varying size without odor. And I would fart maybe twice a year. When I used to drink coffee (all my adult years up to 3yrs ago), it was a stimulus for trying anyway!

Much better once I went gluten-free but at same time, still taking Mg and flax seeds to help things along. Now I am killing off some Candida and it is blocking me up even more so. And much harder -- hard to imagine I'm sure, for a lot of you! There are times when I think "there's no way that will come out, what am I going to do?!", "it's like cement", "is it going cut me?!", "am I going to rip?!!!" Yes, sometimes there is a bit of blood from the exodus.

Anyhooo, even given all that I am at least finally regular, going about once a day, and have been for awhile, which I contribute to going on the Blood Type Diet and kicking gluten and dairy out of my life! Now, dairy will cause diarrhea and vomiting but gluten just makes me wish I were... (at least it's coming out, right?)

:lol: Yup Stephanie....everytime I see that face from now on I'll be thinking orange what???

Well I wasn't really too sure if I wanted to join in here but I just have to ask...what is up with the mucus? What causes that? Can it be caused by gluten?

I guess I've become a little fascinated with whats in the toilet myself...I don't remember ever looking when I was healthy but now....well now I just *have* to look. Then I have my mom calling everyday asking "How was your poop today?" Gluten certainly has changed my life in some pretty strange ways.

As far as privacy in the bathroom...well I've never really had that in any relationship I've been in. I don't even bother closing the door cuz there's no point. Some people just think this is a good time to sit and have a nice chat...I suppose I'm used to it by now so it doesn't bother me.

That would be my husband. And I don't ever worry about stinking up the bathroom, compared to him I smell like flowers.

Same here. Really, even his farts are worse. What's up with *some* men??? I think it's the beer.

Man, I may need to change my avatar *again*! HAHAHA!

Bathroom time is a good time for a chat? Well, they know what they're in for, I guess that's ok. I used to have a boyfriend, who, as an adult, would lock himself in the bathroom with action figures for like half an hour at a time. For some reason that is weirder than just about everything else I've read on this post!

Hi, @thejayland10, Do you still consume dairy?  Dairy can cause increased tTg IgA levels in some people with celiac disease who react to casein, the protein in dairy, just like to gluten.   You might try cutting out the processed gluten free foods.  Try a whole foods, no carbohydrate Paleo diet instead, like the AIP diet (the Autoimmune Protocol Diet by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, a Celiac herself). Processed gluten free foods can be full of excess carbohydrates which can alter your microbiome leading to Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).  SIBO is found in some people who are not responding to a gluten free diet.  SIBO can elevate tTg IgA levels.  The AIP diet cuts out sources of carbohydrates like rice, potatoes (nightshades), quinoa, peas, lentils, legumes, which starves out the SIBO bacteria.  Better bacteria can then proliferate.   I followed the AIP diet to get rid of my SIBO.  It's a strict diet, but my digestive tract had time to rest and heal.  I started feeling better within a few days.  Feeling improvement so soon made sticking to the AIP diet much easier. First, welcome to the forum, @boy-wonder! Second, a little clarification in terminology is in order. Granted, inconsistency is rampant when it comes to the terminology associated with gluten disorders, but it has more or less become settled in this fashion: "Gluten intolerance" is a general term that car refer to either celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity). "Gluten Sensitivity" is the shortened version of NCGS. Third, Celiac disease is not an allergy to gluten. It is an autoimmune disorder characterized by gluten ingestion causing the immunes system to attack the lining of the small bowel, causing damage to it over time due to the constant inflammation that wears down the "villi" (mucosal finger-like projections that make up the lining). Over a significant period of time as gluten continues to be consumed, this generally results in impaired nutrient absorption. There are specific blood antibody tests available to check for celiac disease but the testing will not be valid while on a reduced gluten diet or a gluten free diet. Those already having having begun a gluten free diet must go back to consuming generous amounts of gluten for a period of weeks if they wish to pursue testing for celiac disease. Fourth, NCGS shares many of the same symptoms of celiac disease but does not damage the lining of the small bowel as does celiac disease. There is no test for it. A diagnosis for NCGS depends on first ruling out celiac disease. It is 10x more common than celiac disease. Some experts feel it can be a precursor to the development of celiac disease. Eliminating gluten from your life is the antidote for both. Fifth, you state that you are convince you don't have celiac disease by are just "gluten intolerant" (aka, gluten sensitive). How do you know that? It seems to me you are making a dangerous assumption here. I suggest you consider getting formally tested for celiac disease.

Has anyone found a gluten free parakeet seed mix? I can't find a single one! My doctor wants me to make sure all pet food in the house is gluten free but I'm not sure if that's even possible with parakeets. We love our birds so much! I'm wondering if anyone has ever made their own bird seed mix if gluten free ones are not available.

Hi, new member. About me, I had been suffering with weight gain, bloating and irregular and extreme bowel habits for a year or so. For example, I went on holiday in 2023, then again I  2024 at the same time of year and every shirt I wore in 2023 didn't fit anymore, couldn't even do the buttons up. Being in my mid 50s I put it down to age and middle aged spread. I'd been lucky all my life having good metabolism and being able to eat anything and as much as I like without putting on any weight, it drove my other half mad. Over a conversation with a friend health and age Related stuff came up and he mentioned someone he knew who had recently found out they were gluten intolerant,  I looked it up and had every one of 8 or so symptoms listed. Bloating,  weight gain,  headaches, brain fog,  constipation, etc etc. I took the decision to give going gluten free a try. Within 1 week I had lost 4 lb, now 7 weeks in I've lost 13 lb. I feel much better in general,  the bloating has severely subsided, it used to keep me awake at night as I felt so uncomfortable.  So pretty much a success story, as everyone here knows,  going gluten free isn't always easy, and eating out can be awkward,  but I consider myself lucky that I appear to have an intolerance rather than an allergy or being celiac.  I can deal with most of the gluten free options at the supermarket but, the big one for me is bread, I love bread, and the gluten free options I've tried are pretty poor. I was at a posh black tie event last night and chose all the food options I thought would be gluten free,  however,  there was bread on the table and I couldn't resist it, I had I small piece of bread,  god it was good, I wanted more but I resisted. Today I feel a bit dodgy, my stomach is churning, and I generally feel a bit urgh.  So here's the question, is that really down to 1 small piece of bread or is it coincidence?  I'd be interested in hearing how other people have reacted to a similar situation,  as I was considering having a day off every now and then and enjoying some lovely fresh bread.

Does anybody know of a guide that ranks reevaluates universities and colleges in terms of their accommodation of celiac disease or food allergies?   Thanks in advance for any leads! Valerie
