Hey everybody!

It finally happened! I'm pregnant!

I'm so excited and feel so blessed. Just one issue...the nausea!

I'm only craving certain foods, and unfortunately, most have gluten. <_<

I've been able to pacify all of them with gluten-free substitutes but one...

I REALLY want some "original" ....genuine, "Saltine Crackers." Not just any soda crackers, but that brand. Good grief! (who knew my baby would crave name-brand foods)? :P

Does anybody have any suggestions of very similar gluten-free substitutes? Please help.

Much love...From a very pregnant and nauseaous,

Julie ;)

Congratulations!!! I myself have looked for a saltine cracker replacment...I haven't found anything quite like it.....but maybe the baby would like nutthins? I know I know not the namebrand :P they are definatly a different texture, but at least I think they are similar in flavor! Hope this help and again congratulations!!

First of all, congratulations!!!

I had horrible nausea with both my pregnancies. Even though I was eating gluten then, the saltine cracker thing did nothing for me. In fact, nothing much really helped, I'm sorry to say. Totally not food related, but I did find that the Sea-Bands wrist bands (they work on accupressure) helped take the edge off. I hope it doesn't last too long, I soooooo feel your pain!

good luck and congrats! the closest thing i've found to 'saltines', for when i am feeling sickly is glutano's soda style crackers: Open Original Shared Link

The Ener-g company makes a soda cracker that is closest to Saltines that I have found. Some stores carry them but we usually get them on line. Congrats on the baby.

Congratulations!!! When is the baby(s?) due?

Thank you both for the kind thoughts! :)

I go tomorrow for another UltraSound...I'm making a photoalbum of all my U/S pictures. :P Watching my little "beany baby" grow (it looks like a polebean at the moment).

The baby is due in early May. I am going into week 8....hopefully only about five weeks of nausea remaining. I've heard it often ends at the end of the first trimester.

Keeping everyone in my thoughts.

I'm pregnant too - going into my 7th week and also very queasy. What helps me is candied ginger, dry gluten-free Brown Rice toast, and club soda. Sounds delicious :( but it helps. Good luck!

Congratulations Amy! B)

Is this your first baby?

I'm glad something is helping with your nausea...so far, I'm still struggling.

Take Care! :)

Hi Jules,

Sorry to hear about your nausea. I'm in my 13th week and found that nothing I ate would help mine either. :( Happily, it's starting to get better just because of the time that has passed. There is light at the end of the tunnel!!!

Hi Amy,

Can you eat corn? Maybe what your craving is salt. Try salted pop corn. Yes..the nut thins are amazing, expecially with some warm melted brie spread on top. :P

Hmmmmm!!!

Congrats, it's very exciting news :D

Whoops... sorry.... I said "hi Amy" I meant "Hi Julie"!!

Thanks everyone for the advice and congrats! :)

Later this month, my first trimester will be over! I'm so excited. I must confess that the nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and constipation are killing me

But my little baby is doing good! He/She is big for gestational age...at just nine weeks he/she was already an inch long! :D It doesn't surprise me though...my mom says I weighed nearly 10 pounds at birth. I would love to give birth to a chunky little baby (but hopefully not 10 pounds!) :o Maybe about 8 or so...of course, I won't be too choosy, so long as the baby is healthy! -Julie

Congratulations! All you pregnant women give me hope to be able to carry another pregnancy someday. Ive had 2 miscarriages in the past year, probably due to celiac disease and not being gluten free. I have 12 and 8 year old daughters, and had them with no problems before I new about the celiac. I have been gluten-free for 3 months now. Hoping next year we can try one more time with positive results. So happy for you! Good luck with the morning sickness, sounds like that part is almost over.

Sesame Pretzel Rings from Ener-G. I am also pregnant and this has helped me a lot and I love them!

Guest imsohungry

I had the regular Ener-G pretzels last night and they helped settle my stomach. B) Congrats on your pregnancy as well! :)

The nausea is slowly getting better (instead of constant nausea, it comes in waves)

But the really good news is there is much less night-time nausea, so I am sleeping better! :)

I went to the OB this morning for an ultrasound...she could hear the baby moving! :P

I've got a kicker! :D Heartbeat is strong too. I really have a gut feeling that the baby is a boy. Just a hunch. I'll have to wait about six more weeks to find out for sure. ;)

Lots of love,

Julie B)

McDonald's french fries are pretty darn good, though a tad risky. Not sure why, but salt seems to help. I am craving tons of stuff I can't have, like cheddar biscuits from Red Lobster. I never had a problem with the gluten-free diet before, but now that I'm pregnant everything I am craving is not-gluten-free!!!

Guest imsohungry

Congrats on your pregnancy as well! :)

You are right about the salt...would you believe that last night I ate three bags of Fritos corn chips? Not the big bags, but still...I just got a salt craving and ate a week's worth of chips in one sitting!

I can truly relate to your non-gluten-free cravings! :P This baby of mine wants everything gluten and NAME BRAND...no substitutions! Geez.

Like you, I can usually stick to my gluten-free diet farely easily...once you get used to it, it's not that hard. But it's a whole different story being pregnant! Apparently, nobody told my baby it was in a gluten-free uterus! ;)

Good luck to you! -Julie B)

Dd10 was tested for celiac four years ago bc two siblings were dx’d (positive labs and biopsies). Her results at the time were positive ema  and ttg (7x the UL), but a negative biopsy. We checked again three months later and her ttg was still positive (4x the UL), but ema and biopsy were negative. Doc said it was “potential celiac” and to keep eating gluten, but we were concerned about harming her growth and development while young and had her go gluten-free because we felt the labs and ema in particular were very suggestive of early celiac, despite the negative biopsies. She also had stomach aches and lethargy when eating it. We just felt it’d be better to be safe than sorry. Now, four years later, she doesn’t want to be gluten-free if she doesn’t “have to be,” so underwent a 12 week gluten challenge. She had labs done before starting and all looked great (celiac panel all negative, as expected.) Surprisingly, she experienced no noticeable symptoms when she began eating gluten again, which we felt was a positive sign. However, 12 weeks in, her labs are positive again (ttg 4x the UL and ema positive again as well). Doc says that since she feels fine and her previous two biopsies showed nothing, she can just keep eating gluten and we could maybe biopsy again in two years. I was looking up the ema test and the probability of having not just one but two false positives, and it seems ridiculously low.  Any advice? Would you biopsy again? She’s old enough at this point that I really feel I need her buy-in to keep her gluten-free, and she feels that if the doc says it’s fine, then that’s the final word — which makes me inclined to biopsy again and hope that it actually shows damage this time (not because I want her to have celiac like her sisters, but because I kind of think she already does have it, and seeing the damage now would save her more severe damage in the long run that would come from just continuing to eat gluten for a few more years before testing again.)  Our doc is great - we really like him. But we are very confused and want to protect her. One of her older sibs stopped growing and has lots of teeth problems and all that jazz from not catching the celiac disease sooner, and we don’t want to get to that point with the younger sis. fwiw- she doesn’t mind the biopsy at all. It’s at a children’s hospital and she thinks it’s kind of fun. So it’s not like that would stress her out or anything.

Thanks for the replies. I already use a gluten-free brand of buckwheat flakes I occasionally get itchy bumps. I'm still reviewing all my food products. I occasionally eat prepackaged gluten-free crackers and cookies, so I'll stop using those. I use buckwheat flakes and Doves Farm flour as a base for baking. Would you recommend eliminating those as well? It's a constant search.

Gluten free food is not fortified with vitamins and minerals as regular food is.  Vitamin deficiencies are common especially in recently diagnosed persons,  Get a 25(OH)Vitamin D blood test. And work on raising it.  The safe upper blood level is around 200 nmol/L.    "Low serum levels of 25(OH)D have been associated with increased risk of autoimmune disease onset and/or high disease activity. The role of vitamin D in autoimmune diseases   🏋️‍♂️Good job!   I find the commercial milk will give me mild stomach burn at night, while pasture/grassfed only milk does not bother me at all.  While you are healing, listen to your body.  If it hurts to eat something, eat something else.  You may be able to eat it later, or maybe it is just not good for you.  Lower your Omega 6 to 3 ratio of what you eat.  Most omega 6 fatty acids are inflammation causing.    The standard american diet omega 6:3 ratio is estimated at upward of 14:1.  Thats why fish oil works

I  notice a reaction to tea bags, possibly due to gluten or other substances. Is this recognizable?
    • trents
The blood tests you had done are not the main ones. The two main ones are the "Total IGA" (to check for IGA deficiency) and the "TTG-IGA". Current guidelines for the "gluten challenge" when people have been gluten free for a significant time period are the daily consumption of at least10g of gluten (about the amount in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for at least two weeks leading up to the day of the blood draw. That should give you some perspective.
