Any Gf Shortening?

I want to makecut out sugar cookies for my kids and the recipe calls for shortening. I usually use butter but the cookies spread out. Is there a gluten-free shortening to use?

yep, crisco is gluten-free. but, for a healthier option, you can try coconut oil/shortening. looks like white shortening in a glass jar.

Also Spectrum sells a palm oil shortening. I think Earth Balance has one, too...

:D Woo hoo Crisco. That's what I was using before celiac disease. For some reason ( I think the dietician scared me away from it) I thought it would not be gluten-free and I have been using butter which makes things spread out during baking. I will gladly go back to the old familiar Crisco shortening in the big tub. Thanks so much!!

Non gluten flours do tend to spread. :( I´ve read in many places that you should refrigerate the dough for a couple of hours regardless of the recipe. (Actually, even if you were making "regular" butter cookies, they also recommend you refrigerate the dough to keep the butter from melting...) For cookies, I roll the dough into a cylinder and put it in the freezer. When it´s firm enough, I cut slices about ¼". I only take out half-a-dozen slices at a time. That way, every time I bake them they taste freshly made! Hope this helps in addition to switching to shortening ;)

Isn't it frustrating when dieticians lead you wrong? I've had more than one instance where I suddenly found out, wait, that's okay? That was on the "no" list from the dietician!

Do you have a name of the coconut oil shortening? where do you find it? Does it taste like coconut? Thanks. Claire

I just read Crisco's website, and they do not claim Crisco shortening to be gluten free "for one or more reasons". I'm guessing it is due to cross-contamination or legal fears. They still have a statement on their site that the FDA has not finalized any rules on gluten labeling. I hope to see a change by August 5, 2014 when the FDA gluten labeling rules become effective.

      Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

      Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!

      Welcome @Martha Mitchell, I too would like to know more about your prior lenses, and especially about the potential of gluten in lenses. In theory this should not harm most celiacs, as the autoimmune reaction normally begins in the gut, however, in those who are super sensitive or have dermatitis herpetiformis it may be a potential issue.

      It's most likely going to be a celiac disease diagnosis based on your blood test results, but wait for your doctor to give you a green light for going gluten-free, as they may want to do additional testing. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
