  1. One of the things which has never, even after almost 6 years gluten-free, failed to amaze me is the general level of ignorance regarding cc from most people I encounter with regards to Celiac. Most people seem to grasp the idea that someone with a peanut allergy cannot come into contact with a peanut, on any level, or they could die on the spot. Maybe that...
  2. I don't think the response was rude, it was honest and based in reality. It serves no purpose to cover up an illness just to try and make it through basic training. Sometimes a person cannot do what they want in life due to an illness or condition and there is no shame in that. I'm sure there are positions in the military where having Celiac would not compromise...
  3. I think the whole problem is perspective and the fact that you are a guy is why you feel the bread is too small. Guys have bigger appetites than women, generally speaking, so gluten-free bread calls for 2 sandwiches for you! Yeah, I know, expensive! I find the bread ample sized for sandwiches but I have never been a super-sizer anyway. I always...
  4. I have both Celiac and Hashi's and after 5 years gluten-free, I went seriously hyperthyroid. The reason was my dose of Levoxyl had always been 150mcg and now that I was absorbing again, the dose was way too much. I am now taking 90 mcg. of Nature-throid, a natural supplement with both T3 and T4. I am doing well with this dose. It is very common for people...
  5. The glue on the wooden barrel idea has been thrown about here on this board and, so far, has never been proven to be true. I highly doubt that there is any merit whatsoever to it as nothing of any kind of warning has been heard from any of the reputable Celiac organizations on this subject and if it were such a problem, someone would have published a warning...
  6. There is no gluten in wine so it most likely is the sulfites which are giving you grief. People often notice problems with other substances after going gluten free. I had problems with dairy crop up after 2 years gluten-free so it does happen. Once your body starts to heal, you may react differently to foods or substances that never seemed to give you a...
  7. Why would you need to fast before a thyroid blood test? I've never heard of that before and I have had Hashi's for almost 20 years now. The only thing that's important to know is when you took your last dose of thyroid meds, if already diagnosed and treated.
  8. Not all bleu cheeses contain gluten and that's probably why Joe's uses it and offers it on their menu. They do an excellent job with their gluten-free menu's so you may want to inquire whether they are definitely using gluten-free bleu cheese. Many restaurants with gluten-free menu's offer bleu cheese now so don't automatically assume they have made a mistake...
  9. After trying many of the gluten-free pasta's, the only 2 I eat are the Bi-Aglut and Le Veneziane brand, both from Italy. They are hard to find in stores but you can actually buy them from a New York importer who specializes in Italian food. Do a search for Quattrobimbi and they have it there. It is by far the best gluten-free pasta on the planet and...
  10. Starbucks Chai tea is gluten free. I drink them all the time and I verified both with the ingredients list and by calling the company. They will verify their drinks if you call them.
  11. The information your GI gave you is correct.....ingestion of gluten is what causes the damage in Celiac Disease. Unless you have habits which include putting your fingers in your mouth, after putting on a gluten containing hand cream, then you should be fine. Some people also put their hair in their mouth, which may possibly cause a problem if you use wheat...
  12. There is not much research into Celiac for the simple reason there is no money in Celiac Disease. All of the big illnesses that cause death far more often than Celiac will continue to get all the research dollars because there are therapies and treatments which fund the medical profession and hospitals. I am not accusing all doctors of being money whores...
  13. Yup...that's why they have you sign a waiver. That way, if someone ends up with severe bowel issues because of it, you cannot sue the doctor. I would never sign a waiver.....you have to think many times about ingesting something which could potentially ruin your digestive tract. Funny enough, my skin problems were never that bad and yet they still pushed...
  14. This is exactly what I am talking about....they pulled it because it was their label, therefore, their liability. If you notice now, they have outside vendor gluten-free snacks available for purchase. It's all pre-packaged and not their label so they have no liability. I agree, it's extremely disappointing but with American society being what it is, I can...
  15. If any have read the latest and most updated books on Celiac Disease, I will again point out that this issue is a non-issue, unless you regularly eat soap in your diet which contains gluten. There cannot be CC if it doesn't exist. I didn't realize so many people never rinse their dishes. Besides the fact that very few dish detergents contain a gluten component...
  16. I do not wish to scare you at all but felt I must say this when I read you are taking Accutane for your skin. Accutane has been involved in many lawsuits because it has been shown to cause severe abdominal problems like Crohn's Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and a few others. Doctors routinely prescribe this for people without a bad acne problem, without...
  17. With regards to natural flavorings....the vast majority of them are gluten-free and if there was wheat in any of them, it would have to be listed on the label, under the allergen law. Not so true for barley, however, but from all the updated information I have read, natural flavorings are another item that keeps getting a bad rep with regards to it's gluten...
  18. I am an extremely sensitive Celiac and react to very low levels of gluten and yet, have not had any issues with what you have listed as possible contaminates to our food supply. I just think these are non-issues for the vast majority of anyone with Celiac, regardless of how sensitive you are. On-going issues, while following a strictly gluten-free diet,...
  19. Yup...that's the world I really miss! It wasn't perfect but it was far better and less stressful to live like we did than what we have now. There wasn't all the control we have now, which I am always annoyed at and tend to push back on. I feel bad for kids today...they are being raised in a box and have no sense of the freedom we had as kids all those years...
  20. The gluten free diet will not impact testing for thyroid antibodies....it's not the same as testing for Celiac, where the gluten-free diet will affect testing. However, if you are being treated with the correct dosage of thyroid hormone (this may mean suppressing your TSH to accomplish)and you follow a strict gluten-free diet, it should bring your antibody...
  21. Ask them to change their gloves before making your latte and you should be fine. Get out there and have a good time!
  22. While certain cancers are associated with Celiac Disease, after 5 years on a strict gluten-free diet, the statistics show that your odds of getting any of these cancers go back to that of the general population. Also, it is far more likely you will be diagnosed with these cancers while still an undiagnosed Celiac and not after. These statements come from...
  23. You are smart to not inject anything like fillers when having an autoimmune issue. They are foreign substances not natural to the human body and with allergies and intolerances, the incidence of a reaction or rejection is much higher than that of the general public without these issues. When it's on your face, why take the risk? Lasers are a good option...
  24. I thought of another idea that was presented to me by the surgeon but not all people are candidates.....you can have fat removed from your abdominal area and then re-injected into your face. Sounds ridiculous but it works well for those of us who cannot use other products due to autoimmune issues. It will re-absorb eventually and have to be repeated but I...
