ARCHIVED Question About Anti-Endomysial Antibodies (Ema), Iga Class
Gemini replied to Mjay71's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is very hard to diagnose other AI issues also because not everyone is serio-positive. Plus the overlap of symptoms can fool even the most savvy doctor. AI diseases can wreak a lot of havoc if they go undiagnosed long enough. I have 3 others besides Celiac and I know I would not have developed some of them if I hadn't gone 30 years without the Celiac... -
ARCHIVED Hair Dye Products
Gemini replied to Judyin Philly's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
DH is caused by ingestion of gluten.....that is correct. But you would not be ingesting hair dye. It would poison you and make you very sick. You cannot develop DH from skin contact with gluten. Read up on it in any good Celiac information/medical book. Surprising, yes, but you have to ingest gluten into your gut to cause a DH outbreak. Anything else... -
ARCHIVED Question About Anti-Endomysial Antibodies (Ema), Iga Class
Gemini replied to Mjay71's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I still don't understand why testing gets so completely screwed up with doctors. Celiac has been in the mainstream for quite awhile now and yet, they still do not do the complete testing. My sister, who has 2 AI conditions linked to Celiac, and a diagnosed sister (me), told me she doen't have it because her doctor tested her tTg and it was fine. ... -
ARCHIVED Question About Anti-Endomysial Antibodies (Ema), Iga Class
Gemini replied to Mjay71's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The gliadin antibody tests are very useful, along with a full celiac panel. It will tell you whether you are reacting to gluten and is the standard test for dietary compliance, in those who are serio-positive. But it has to be coupled with all the other tests for a more complete picture. There is also the scenario where you could be reacting to gluten but... -
ARCHIVED A New Royal Is Coming!
Gemini replied to love2travel's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I am a fan also and LOVE British history. I wish only the best for these 2 and admire Catherine very much. She is very self assured and for a regular gal, has fit into the job very nicely. She is an asset to the royal family. I think at some point they will have a girl and she'll look just like Diana. How could she not as William looks so much like... -
ARCHIVED Hair Dye Products
Gemini replied to Judyin Philly's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Nothing....unless you have an additional allergy to wheat/gluten and it causes a topical reaction. Topical reactions from hair dye are from contact allergies, not a celiac response. Even if you did ingest some hair dye, you would have more to worry about than a Celiac reaction....hair dye should never, ever be ingested! Since hair dye is rinsed very well... -
ARCHIVED Please Help Me Understand My Results
Gemini replied to shadowseek's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You know, when I have blood work done every 2-3 years just to make sure I am being as compliant as I can, they never run the DGP. It's always the AGA IgA/IgG. I was diagnosed via blood work and failed all the tests so I can use any test because there is something to compare it to but no one runs the DGP. Maybe because it wasn't around when I was diagnosed... -
Against the Grain baguettes are like food crack.......once you have them, it's tough to not buy them. I think it is the best gluten-free French-type bread out there. It is delicious grilled and used to make bruschetta.

ARCHIVED Liver Problems In Celiac
Gemini replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Same here. I had elevated liver enzymes for years......until I was diagnosed and started the gluten-free diet. They are still normal. This is very common with Celiac Disease. -
ARCHIVED Please Help Me Understand My Results
Gemini replied to shadowseek's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Actually, the AGA IgA/IgG tests are not outdated or useless. They are just less sensitive than the newer DGP ones. Many docs still use them and many people are diagnosed this way. I would ask for the DGP anyway as there was a positive tTg. Gene testing would be very helpful also. -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests Positive..do I Really Need A Biopsy?
Gemini replied to VeggieGal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You don't need the subsidized foods in the UK as the stores are full of gluten-free options like we have in the US. Genius bread is sold in many food stores and it isn't overly priced, from what I can remember from my last trip. As for thyroid meds, I would imagine that there are alternative docs in the UK who would be more than happy to help. Thyroid meds... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests Positive..do I Really Need A Biopsy?
Gemini replied to VeggieGal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't recall comparing her set of circumstances to mine, I just responded to your post about false positives on the tTg test. If you have a positive on the tTg, even a barely positive one, then you may have any one of the AI diseases that will raise tTg. I have 2 AI diseases that will raise tTg so I know the work required to lower it to normal. The other... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests Positive..do I Really Need A Biopsy?
Gemini replied to VeggieGal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There are no false positives with celiac bloodwork...only false negatives. If the tTg is positive from another source other than Celiac, then the EMA and IgA/IgG testing would be negative, which would make sense. You will not test positive on an EMA from anything else. But you are correct in that tTg can be elevated from other AI diseases so that's why... -
Caramel is gluten free. I have never come across any that isn't. You still should always check ingredients listings but caramel is not a worry.

ARCHIVED Blood Tests Positive..do I Really Need A Biopsy?
Gemini replied to VeggieGal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The tests they need doing are the free T3 and free T4.....really, the whole thyroid panel should be done each and every time you are tested. Americans have to also find doctors who will do this as our system does the same annoying thing. They get cheap with testing and cheap with prescriptions, to the point of extreme annoyance. It's all about money and... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests Positive..do I Really Need A Biopsy?
Gemini replied to VeggieGal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I know that the levothyroxine in the US is gluten free but not sure about the UK. I used levothyroxine for a long time before switching to Nature-throid because I needed the T3. I never had a problem with it, other than it didn't have any T3. That is a good point, though! -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests Positive..do I Really Need A Biopsy?
Gemini replied to VeggieGal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I know how you feel about endo's, Tom. That's fine. I just think they are over-done today and not always necessary, especially since she had a medical error done by a previous doctor. I think if you do not need one for diagnosis, the decision to have one can be made later, if you are having any problems. I have never needed one and will not have one unless... -
ARCHIVED Going gluten-free Made Grave's Disease Worse?
Gemini replied to Owlmuse's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Ok...I understand what you mean. I do not know that much about Graves treatment as I have the opposite problem so thank you for the little education! That is strange because the med is an immune suppressant so your thyroid should be behaving. The gluten-free diet should improve absorption...maybe you haven't started to absorb better yet as it can take... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests Positive..do I Really Need A Biopsy?
Gemini replied to VeggieGal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi VeggieGal! You have received a lot of advice here and I think Tom has given you enough good responses to support your decision of not having an endo. I declined the endo also because I was too sick to have one and I also have Sjogren's Syndrome, an associated condition of Celiac. It makes your eyes and mouth extremely dry. I am super protective... -
ARCHIVED Going gluten-free Made Grave's Disease Worse?
Gemini replied to Owlmuse's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Can you give me a little more information? If you have Graves, what meds do you take to control it? I was under the assumption that they nuke your thyroid to knock it down and then give you thyroid replacement therapy to fine tune your numbers. I ask because I have Celiac and Hashi's thyroid disease. I am under active but with Hashi's you can swing... -
Restasis needs a bit of time to kick in and work. It is used to suppress inflammation and we all know that can take longer than we like. I think it was at least 6 weeks before I noticed any difference but it usually takes a while and then you start to notice that your eyes feel better....it's not a hugely dramatic thing like going gluten-free and having...
-
Well...that's interesting! I hope you still try the Restasis, even though your antibodies are negative. You may want to be tested again down the road to see if things have changed. ANA can be elevated from Celiac so that might be the cause. So you found a Rheumatologist?

ARCHIVED Repercussions Of Cheating! :(
Gemini replied to a84c72's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Addy...as a working person with a good job, I am only too happy to provide food assistance, through my taxes, to those falling on harder times....especially those who try so hard to eat healthy and gluten free. Good for you! I wish everyone had your mentality about food. Receiving assistance, when needed, should not be something to hide. It is expensive... -
ARCHIVED Repercussions Of Cheating! :(
Gemini replied to a84c72's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nice reply, IrishHeart! I couldn't have said it better. Thank you! Let it be known that no one should do a blanket apology for anyone else. The OP deserved the verbal spank that she got. To come on a Celiac forum where the vast majority of people are trying hard to better their health and be taken seriously for once in their lives, and admit to repeated...
