  1. Tammy....my advice to people who want testing done is to "gluten up"! That means including gluten at every meal for best possible testing results. Feed your children as much gluten as they can stand. Good luck!
  2. Enjoy your hike, GottaSki! We got some snow here in the East and I hope to go snow shoeing tomorrow. I have to break in the new pair I got from Santa! 6'1"???????? The youngest kid?????? Oh my, you have giant children! I never got past 5'4" because of Celiac.......wish I had known years ago as I would love to be taller.
  3. I think a lot of people cheat and it seems to be largely younger people. I also think that it's the same mindset as the diabetic who cheats and they cheat a lot! For the older people like myself, you can't do that so much when you get past 50 as the bite in the arse is really bad. If you get deathly ill from eating gluten, and I am one of them, you don...
  4. After spending the last couple of weeks trying to help 3 (yes, 3!) of my friends who think they may have a gluten problem and get them started on a trial diet, and then listening to them complain, b%$@#, and become short tempered with me over what they percieve to be the diet from hell, I have thoroughly enjoyed this thread and think we have some brilliant...
  5. Addy....probiotics have been on the market for years now. If they were that dangerous, then you would be reading about all the deaths and illnesses that they supposedly may cause. The talking heads on TV have nothing better to do than report bad stuff and yet......silence with regards to probiotics. You can't say that about the overrated, "blessed by the...
  6. I agree with you Irish! However, I would add that as much as I respect Dr. Green for his medical knowledge of Celiac, he is an AMA doctor and I don't always agree with him 100% with regards to things like this. I also do not agree with his stance on endoscopies. He is adamant about having one for diagnositic and follow up reasons but I don't agree. Not...
  7. Bart....Legal Seafoods Restaurant, which is here in Boston, has mail order fish. It is expensive but no more than what others are charging now. Their fish is very good quality...high end and they test their seafood to meet certain standards. I send my father seafood via mail from them and they rave about it. I eat in the restaurant occasionally as they...
  8. Fresh meats, chicken and fish do not contain gluten. Some processed poultry may contain a solution which is injected into the bird to plump it and keep it fresher but that is not so much the norm these days. I buy all my meat and poultry/fish from Whole Foods and have never come across any fresh protein that contains injected anything. You should always...
  9. The DGP or AGA tests are pretty reliable, for compliance to the gluten-free diet. The OP stated that she had positive blood work for diagnosis so these tests should be reliable for compliance testing. It would be good to know what the numbers at diagnosis and re-test were, though. Either there is another health issue going on, or another food intolerance...
  10. What the results mean is that your daughter, if she triggers for Celiac, will most likely have a more serious case of it. I have a double DQ-2 and that is certainly true of me. I was down to about 95 pounds at diagnosis and nearly died from it. But...that was because the medical geniuses never figured it out until I requested the Celiac blood work panel...
  11. If a resort where totally gluten free, they could still accommodate the gluten eaters without any problems with cc....the gluten eaters can eat gluten-free for the vacation. What is the big deal with that? We eat NO differently than anyone else...we just don't eat gluten but many, many foods, including pastries and desserts can easily be made gluten free...
  12. If you are in the US, deductions have to tally up to 7 1/2% of your adjusted income to qualify for a deduction and it's going up to 10% this coming year, as part of the tax increases we are going to be paying. Unless you have surgery and pay for it out of pocket, the vast majority of people will not be able to deduct gluten-free food or mileage. You may be...
  13. Hi Firuze......I have never been to France but as as fan of French cooking and food, I cannot imagine the French would pollute their cheese with a gluten component, unless they make beer cheese or something like that. Straight cheese should be gluten-free in any country. I think most cheese, unless a processed spread, would be fine. Ditto for cream cheese...
  14. Ohhhh...that is funny! You are correct. The pain has to seem to come from interaction with the cat, and not from the collar, so the dog will think kitty has Jedi Ninja powers! What a great way to put that!
  15. Oh my goodness! Please find another dietician because that's so ridiculous, it's scary that people with an education are giving out that kind of false information. There is no gluten in coffee cups or coffee, for that matter, so enjoy your take-out!
  16. Sounds familiar...... Really.....it isn't all that difficult, if you like to cook. I never had any withdrawal but was so sick at diagnosis, it was a welcome relief to eat food that didn't make me sick. It's a good time to go gluten-free as there are more and more mainstream products to help with the transition. More important for kids because good...
  17. The hunter/prey thing in Huskies is huge. They go after wildlife and domestic animals. I had a Husky/Shepherd mix and was floored when she went after, and tried to attack, a deer and then some sheep. It was something we were not able to address because, after consulting with a dog trainer, they advised the use of an electronic collar. My husband refused...
  18. You sound like many of us.....I researched things also to find out why I was in such excruciating pain yet no one else seemed to be interested in finding out. The docs will tell you it's either acid reflux or IBS.....NOT! Those are just symptoms of a larger problem and many times it's food related. Look at the Genius website. They even have just started...
  19. Hi VeggieGal! I think all Celiacs need to be somewhat vigilant about CC.....don't quite agree with different levels of sensitivity. Damage can happen whether you feel it or not. I think most of us who appear very sensitive, like myself, just have the pleasure of really feeling a hit badly when it happens. Other don't but when they had their biopsies...
  20. While understanding perfectly how you feel because I can never eat anything at my Christmas party either and they do NOTHING to accommodate my needs, I cannot agree that gluten is in everything. It's in the crappy food that keeps the rest of the population going to doctors for high cholesterol and diabetes. It's NOT in many of the other foods Celiacs can...
  21. While eating out has some inherent risks, those risks can be sharply lessened by choosing a better place to eat, where they tend to get the concept of a gluten free meal correct. I want a restaurant that will get it right, not create something that may be sorta gluten free but really not. It's misleading to the recently diagnosed Celiacs who have no concept...
  22. If you feel much better gluten free, that it's noticeable, then you may have found an answer there. You may be gluten sensitive vs. full blown Celiac but if you feel better eating gluten free, then stick with it. You also have a Celiac sister and that means you may have some kind of problem with gluten. All my siblings have assoicated conditions or symptoms...
  23. Celiac Disease does not make one immuno-compromised. It's just the opposite. We have an overactive immune system. To the OP....if your doctor thinks you may be gluten intolerant, are you following the gluten-free diet also? Will that be something you stay with? I am happy you found a solution to your symptoms and hope you feel better and stay that...
  24. Hannah.....if you have only been gluten-free for a few weeks, it's not unusual for anyone to experience a reaction to processed gluten free products. Your gut is still in the infancy of healing and you can have reactions to many foods, without it being related to gluten at all. This is far more common for many people than thinking you are reacting to perceived...
  25. OK....I don't mean to beat a dead horse here but if he is willing to diagnosis you even if the biopsy is negative, why don't they just do it now? Oy Vay......doctors! Yes, get the bone density done. Celiacs have a high rate of osteoporosis but you may not be there yet. Even if you are, once you go gluten-free and start absorbing your calcium again...
