ARCHIVED Gluten Free And Cholesterol Is Still Too Low.
Gemini replied to c.moriel's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It's never a bad thing to have low cholesterol. Mine is still low but, I think, reasonable. Last testing, 149 (non-fasting). It originally was around 120-125. Look at it this way...you'll probably never have to worry about heart disease! Be more concerned with raising HDL......mine was in the 20's and now is just under 60. Good luck and congratulations... -
ARCHIVED Best Bread And Pasta
Gemini replied to DonnaMM's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Donna......here are some links for the best bread and pasta ever. I am particularly picky about quality (or you can call me a food snob!) so these are my favorites after trying out many different kinds over the years. Open Original Shared Link The link I was going to give you for pasta will not work for you because they are all corn based and I see... -
ARCHIVED This Is Getting Old, How Long Did It Take For Your Diagnosis
Gemini replied to DonnaMM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think this is a wise idea. I know you are discouraged but with your history of illness, all strongly associated with Celiac, you need to do a strict dietary trial. But be prepared that it can take a long time for iron levels to normalize. Hang in there and I hope you feel better really soon! -
ARCHIVED New And Upset After First Appointment
Gemini replied to EmmKat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Gold Standard results? The biopsy is just as unreliable as the blood work. If the OP has an endo, there is absolutely no guarantee that a doctor will find Celiac, if damage is patchy. You have to be virtually villi-less for it to be a slam dunk diagnosis. You have to be willing to do a dietary trial if testing is inconclusive. Most people garner more... -
ARCHIVED This Is Getting Old, How Long Did It Take For Your Diagnosis
Gemini replied to DonnaMM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Donna......I am reading your signature lines and am horrified that you have so many problems that all are strongly connected to Celiac and yet, you still struggle with a diagnosis? Lymphoma is one of the cancers Celiacs are really prone to when they go undiagnosed. That changes with a strict gluten-free diet. IBS? Not a diagnosis but a clear indicator... -
ARCHIVED Intense Exercise : Good Idea Or Not For Us Celiacs?
Gemini replied to zamm0's topic in Sports and Fitness
This is incredibly good advice, Northern Elf! I find that working out in the gym, pounding those weights and doing the mountain climb on the treadmill the best medicine ever. I have been gluten-free for 8 years so have healed pretty well and was ready for the exercise that I am doing. I can walk into the gym in a bad mood and not feeling my best but after... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed Celiac Disease 3 Years Ago, Still Not Getting Better
Gemini replied to Sniffy911's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello Merp! While I am quite humbled to have been of some help to you, I seriously doubt that I am the most amazing person on the planet. I mean, really......that is a bit of an overstatement. I have a few questions.....are you going to be tested for thrush because it may be difficult to ask a doctor for anti-fungals without some testing to back... -
ARCHIVED 3.5 Year Sore Throat – At My Wits End...any Ideas?
Gemini replied to merpaul's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Merpaul....I just saw this post after answering your other one and thought I'd throw in a few ideas after reading this. I am sorry you are so sick but I understand as I've been there, done that and it isn't pretty, I know. Your siblings have Celiac genes.....the main ones so there is a very high chance you carry at least one of these also. Celiac would...- 2 replies

ARCHIVED Diagnosed Celiac Disease 3 Years Ago, Still Not Getting Better
Gemini replied to Sniffy911's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Merp.......do you think you have acid reflux? Do you have any other symptoms of it, besides what you have now? Usually with thrush, you have a sore mouth and tongue, it can affect your taste buds and sometimes you get little white spots in your mouth and on your tongue. Your throat does look very red and irritated. Have any of the doctors suggested... -
ARCHIVED How Important Is A Biopsy For My Almost 2 Year Old?
Gemini replied to Jamie1450's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The gene testing, while not 100%, is still very useful to do. That's how I found out I have a double DQ-2 and explained the severity of my symptoms. I think it always wise to include this when trying to diagnose Celiac. It's added information. That perfect world is coming fast for Celiac Disease and if one group of students can sue and force a school... -
Please, please do not let him take Accutane! It can and does cause severe GI problems. There have been numerous lawsuits from patients who suffered severe illnesses caused by this drug. It should be yanked from the market. Other problems with it, it completely dries up your oil glands, which is not always the cause of acne. It can affect tear production...

ARCHIVED New To This World, Question For The Long Timers Here
Gemini replied to julissa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Eating at the Whole Foods salad bar can be done successfully but my rule of thumb, because I am so insanely sensitive and have to be very careful, is I only do so if I get there when they first set it up and no one has rifled through the bar. I eat off of the salad bar at work but do the same...I open the cafeteria at lunch and all the workers know why I... -
ARCHIVED How Important Is A Biopsy For My Almost 2 Year Old?
Gemini replied to Jamie1450's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You should be able to get your pediatrician to diagnose your son, without the endo, if he has said your son HAS Celiac Disease. I personally would not do an endo on a 2 year old but that's just me. Things are changing rapidly on having to "prove" to anyone that your son has Celiac and must follow a gluten-free diet. My niece is a freshman at Ithaca... -
ARCHIVED Hypocholesterolemia - A.k.a. Really Low Cholesterol
Gemini replied to nvsmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Oh....you do not want to be hyper! It's horrible. Heart palps, not sleeping at all and feeling like you've just dropped a handful of speed. Just keep an eye on symptoms. Mine happened at the 3 year mark with healing and WHAM! I lost 10 pounds overnight and I don't have 10 pounds to spare. I'll take sluggy low thyoid any day of the week. I don... -

ARCHIVED Hypocholesterolemia - A.k.a. Really Low Cholesterol
Gemini replied to nvsmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I guess I should have added that low cholesterol is very mich linked to celiac if you suffer from severe malabsorption with it. You just aren't absorbing fats, which are the first food group to tank because fats are so hard to digest anyway. By the time I was diagnosed, I wasn't absorbing anything. That may have been the earliest indication you had a... -
ARCHIVED Hypocholesterolemia - A.k.a. Really Low Cholesterol
Gemini replied to nvsmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have Celiac and Hashi's, plus my cholesterol is low. I kind of like it. No hassles from anyone when they see it. The year before I was diagnosed with Celiac, and suffering from extreme malabsorption, my cholesterol always came in around 125. Triglycerides are always on the very low end of normal. The most recent cholesterol testing was done ... -
For me, I never get far enough to even worry about serious complications because the immediate effects are enough to keep me from ever cheating. I never even have any desire to cheat...not on the radar. But, then again, being up all night, hurling until I think my stomach will come up, does the trick for me! Think of what you are craving and find...

ARCHIVED Question For Those Of You Who Are Lactose Intolerant.
Gemini replied to josh052980's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Absolutely, Josh! I do fine with yoghurt and cheeses also....except gooey melted cheese on something. That gets me, like milk and ice cream do. Yoghurt and cheese making add enzymes to the mix to help produce the end product and these enzymes help to partially break down the lactose. As for the gooey melted cheese, I think that just mucks up my system... -
ARCHIVED Daughter's Endoscopy This Morning
Gemini replied to formygirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Whatever your daughter is missing and craving, let us know and we can steer you in the right direction on delicious replacements for her. As far as bread is concerned, my all time favorite bread is the Canyon Bakehouse brand. Open Original Shared Link This bread is phenomenal and I have given it to the wheat eaters and they love it. There is a place on... -
You do know I love ya, Bart, and have much respect for your viewpoints because I know how hard you work at being healthy. But gluten in clothes detergent is just not an issue for a Celiac. The allergy thing....has nothing to do with an intolerence reaction. That's a topical thing and allergies can often produce a more violent reaction than a Celiac...- 32 replies

I totally understand the blood sugar problem because before I was diagnosed with Celiac, my blood sugar was somewhat unstable. In fact, now that I think about it, your blood sugar issues may stem from being glutened on a more regular basis than you should be. I have passed out twice from unstable blood sugar but that all went away once I was gluten-free...

With all due respect to Bart regarding the laundry detergent.......that is sooooo just a non-issue. Your clothes are rinsed and unless you chew on your clothes, and the washing machine is not rinsing them, you cannot be glutened by laundry detergent......unless you eat it for dinner. Can we have some common sense here? I am extremely sensitive to gluten...- 32 replies

I did not mean to sound like I thought you were being blase' so sorry for that. I am reading your second post and can't believe that you do this! How do you get by without feeling absolutely horrible, with all your food and medical issues? Yikes! I am guessing that your travel is your living? I wouldn't know what to tell you because I have never been...

I admire you for your perserverence in travel but my feelings are a bit different than yours. It would be wonderful to have an enzyme to protect against cc while traveling but I always strive to eat safe at all costs. If the option to eat is picking food off of a gluten base then I go without and would not return to a place that posed so much risk to me...
