ARCHIVED What (in Your Opinion) Is The Best Place In The World To Travel
Nooner replied to frenchiemama's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I went on a Carnival cruise right after being diagnosed. I called Carnival and told them, they had me meet with the head waitress on the ship right after boarding, and she made sure I knew what I could eat at every meal. And if I wanted something that wasn't normally gluten free, she had the kitchen make it gluten free. I didn't get sick once one the cruise... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerent Or Celiac?
Nooner replied to georgie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had a similar situation, I found out through an elimination diet I was sensitive to gluten, but the blood tests came back negative. My doctor said it couldn't possibly be celiac and wanted to treat me for IBS. Oh, and she said I should eat as much gluten as I wanted. I fired her. I felt comfortable with just going gluten free, but my husband was worried... -
I said no to the biopsy. Actually it was Heck No. Actually it was... well, I shouldn't use that language here. Anyhow, I shopped around until I found a doctor who would treat me based on my Enterolab results and dietary response with no biopsy. Try calling the celiac support group leaders in your area for a referral, it worked for me. My personal...

I can eat tater tots? OMG I'm so happy! ~Li -
Dr Daniel McGuire South Florida Gastro Associates Boynton Beach Florida (in Palm Beach County) He accepted my Enterolab results, and based on that, my history and dietary response, diagnosed me. He was recommended by the local CSA of America support group. ~Li

ARCHIVED I Just Figured Out,,,,i Have Been Glutening Myself...
Nooner replied to chgomom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When I eat chicken or turkey, I feel like I've been glutened. It doesn't matter what the source of the poultry is. How rude of the company not to disclose on the package the source of the maltodextrin. I hope you are feeling better by now! I'm discovering that just because something is gluten free doesn't mean I won't react to it. I had some cocoa... -

I'm glad it went well for you! It's good to hear there are some good doctors out there! Please keep us posted with your results. ~Li -
ARCHIVED Apri
Nooner replied to kbtoyssni's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know Apri is gluten free, but this was actually my trigger! 5 years ago I was using an Ortho brand (either Ortho Cept or Ortho Novum, sorry, can't remember which, it was a long time ago) and my insurance switched me to Apri because it's the generic for the Ortho brand and therefore cheaper. The day I started taking the Apri pills, I started my symptoms... -
Serena, I second Laura's suggestion. That's exactly what I did, called support groups to find a referral. The support group leaders are there to help you, and trust me, word gets around as to which physician is good and which one treats you like dirt. You might have to speak to more than group leader. There are two separate organizations within a few...

I found out I was gluten intolerant when I went on an elimination diet in July. I had been sick for a few years and it just kept getting worse, and food seemed to be the logical place to start. I was a little suprised to discover the gluten sensitivity, but I was floored when I reacted to broccoli, cabbage and chicken. Chicken? Who can't eat chicken?...

ARCHIVED Another Stool Question!
Nooner replied to Terch's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yep, me too. C with mucous, whether it's gluten or another sensitivity. My non-celiac hubby tells me that he also gets mucous the day after eating anything that bothers his stomach. (I haven't verified this personally, I'm taking his word for it!) I had a mediocre doctor try to give me drugs for IBS because of the C with M. She said I couldn't possibly... -
Yes, I get constipated (with mucous, ewwwww!) after my intestines start hurting and about the same time my joints start aching. I also get C if I eat one of the other foods I'm sensitive to. I still can't believe I'm talking about poo with other people! You know you're a celiac when... ~Li

Your husband is a keeper! I'm sure you already knew that. My relatives have no clue. They mean well, and try hard, but they say things like "Why can't you eat bread? There's flour in bread? Really?" Not everyone is enlightened. Just one more personal anecdote to say you can not be too careful about CC. I got sick when my husband touched a...

Ditto! Thanks for bringing all this up! As for the gloves, anybody have any idea what brand? Does it say on the box they are dusted with flour? ~Li

Kristen, First of all, I agree with everyone else! I feel the same as you! When I first discovered that gluten was my problem, I thought "Yay! That's easy, no gluten!" I was already used to reading labels and monitoring everything I ate because of a previous misdiagnosis. So this had to be a piece of (gluten free) cake. Well, not so much. I...

ARCHIVED A Couple Of Random Questions
Nooner replied to wonkabar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Wonkabar, I took my Enterolab results with me and wrote up a one page history of my history, symptoms and dietary responses, along with doctors I'd seen and various misdiagnoses over the years. LKelly8 is right, they love that stuff! Plus you are less likely to forget things during the appointment. The GI I went to was highly recommended by members... -
ARCHIVED I Ate Some Bad Things And I'm Noticing Strange Symptoms
Nooner replied to SarahTorg's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Great advice! In addition to the brownies (hide some in the back of the freezer) and some of your favorite gluten free chocolate (hidden), have some gluten free ice cream on hand. And honestly, the longer i'm gluten free, the better my PMS is, and the fewer cravings I have during the month. ~Li -
ARCHIVED Red Wine Made Me Sick And I Dont Know Why
Nooner replied to rutland's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Stef74, do you have any problems with yeast? A friend of mine who is yeast intolerant can't drink any wine. Or it could be any number of things in the wine. I treated my DH to a winemaking at a local wine shop for our anniversary, and found that lots of things are added to wine during the fermentation. Yeast, sulfites, different flavorings. The wine... -

ARCHIVED South Florida Gastrointestinal Diagnostic Center
Nooner replied to vanesonica's topic in Doctors
Hi vanesonica, I'm in Palm Beach county, and haven't heard of the center, but I'm pretty new to this stuff. My husband wanted me to see a doctor, to ease his mind that it wasn't something else (like cancer). So I talked to the 2 support group leaders in my area (2 different support groups) to see if they knew of anyone good. I had already done the... -
Oh my gosh!!! I have gluten nightmares too!!! Waking up in a cold sweat, thinking you've just eaten bread or pizza or pasta... My husband thinks I'm crazy...okay maybe I am, but not in this case! ~Li

ARCHIVED Ok So Should I Get More Testing?
Nooner replied to Adelle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Adelle, I voted "NO" on the whole biopsy issue. I had a negative blood test from my (former) GP, I tried going gluten free and had positive results, and I did the Enterolab gluten sensitivity panel on my own. I only went to a GI because I heard about one in my area that accepted Enterolab, and was knowledgable about celiac. I went to him with a... -
ARCHIVED Adventures In Er Land.....after My C'mon Carrots? Post
Nooner replied to chgomom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My heart goes out to you! I hope you are feeling better soon! I agree with jerseyangel about the gluten-challenge - totally useless, and potentially dangerous. Good for you for going gluten-free again. And good for you for reporting that doctor who IMO should lose his license! I swear, just because they don't know what's going on doesn't give them... -
Welcome! I've been doing this about the same amount of time as you. I haven't experimented much with bread yet, but one I've found that I like is Whole Food's gluten free bakery. Look for it in the fresh bakery section. This message board is great, try doing a search to see if there have been past posts on low carb/gluten free. I also found a...
