  1. Nacho Lunchables are a favorite for DD. She likes that it is a "normal" food. She took her lunch every day even before going gluten free so it hasn't been too bad. Instead of Spaghetti-Os in her thermos, I can cook Mrs. Leeper's animal pasta and add spaghetti sauce. Rice cakes and peanut butter work, but she can't take them to school because of the no...
  2. I just cooked some gluten free animal pasta (Mrs. Leeper's Just for Kids), topped it with spaghetti sauce and called it spaghetti-os. The girls loved it and said it tasted just like the real thing! It is so nice to find something that makes them feel normal again.
  3. Meijer has a very large selection of gluten free products! They carry Glutino, Tinkyada, Amy's, Chebe, EnviroKids... It was so great to find all the things I buy right at my grocery store. They don't seem to be much cheaper than Wild Oats, but at least it saves a trip!
  4. I tried yhe cream of chicken recipe from this site a few weeks ago. It worked pretty well so I hope the cream of mushroom recipe works for you! Open Original Shared Link
  5. LaChoy soy sauce is gluten free. Luckily that's what we used anyway so I didn't have to buy anything new for cooking. As for your other question, I do think that a glutening is more noticeable the longer she is gluten free. That's something I've picked up on with DD. If she eats one single baby goldfish cracker, she is sicker than she seemed to be prior...
  6. We have this every year for Christmas too. MIL's recipe uses Rhode's frozen dough so I thought I would buy kinnikinnick and try that instead.
  7. Check with your pharmacist-they should be able to find out if it is gluten free. DD has had 2 different brands of amoxicillin sine going gluten free and both were fine for her.
  8. That was pretty much our decision. We, in fact, started the gluten free diet even before her bloodwork came back. We did the research, discovered the testing wasn't reliable for children her age anyway, and decided against waiting because we wouldn't have consented to the biopsy anyway. I just felt it was too invasive for a tiny, underweight 1-year-old...
  9. Thanks! I finally got a hold of her ped and he said the same thing. I'm just paranoid about everything these days.
  10. 10 kids at DD's school have come down with chicken pox-all had been inoculated! DD is feeling yucky today and the nurse mentioned it and wants us to keep an eye out. Now I'm worried about my little celiac. She has not been inoculated yet, but apparently that wouldn't even matter. My question is are there additional concerns with her if DD brings chicken...
  11. Good luck to you! It wasn't easy at first, but I found that cooking gluten free meals was much easier than trying to find good gluten free quick lunches so I started over-cooking at night so I could eat during the day. Also, fresh fruit & veggies are always a safe bet. I snacked on potato chips and popcorn a lot, which helped.
  12. My older DD often complained of pain in her shins and her knees. Her ped at the time called them growing pains, too. She would wake up in the night screaming in pain. Through this board, I've become aware of some other issues with her that could be signs of celiac, rather than just how she is which is what we always thought. We started the older two...
  13. I would wait until she is considered "normal" on the growth chart. Give her a chance to catch up before you give her something that could set her back again. My doctor had recommended age 3 or 4 so we could know for sure before she goes to school. I do preschool here so she'll actually be almost 6 before she starts kindergarten so we will wait a little...
  14. DH's family has decided that to make Christmas Eve easier and quicker for everyone, they are ordering pizza for dinner instead of cooking. Easier for you, maybe! DD has never had pizza, but even at 1 I don't want her singled out and feeling leftout. Is there a decent gluten free pizza I can buy and cook for her?
  15. We have had a lot of behavioral issues over the years that I never would have connected to a dietary issue, other than noticing it is worse when they have a lot of sugar. Recently, my two older DDs have been complaining off and on about stomach aches. They also seem to have a lot of gas. DD4 eats constantly and is at the top of her growth chart so I wouldn...
  16. We have recently discovered a snack called Baffles that are gluten free. I found them by accident in my regular grocery store. They come in cinnamon, caramel, chocolate, cheddar and barbecue. We currently only use the cinnamon for DD, but we are considering taking the older girls off gluten as well so I'll be buying the savory versions to replace some...
  17. Well, it would be possible (as with anything) to be a carrier of the gene, but not have it yourself. In that case it is most likely that you and your husband both carry the gene. As to growth that quickly, I can't even imagine! DD gained 5 oz. in 5 days I thought I was going crazy. The nurse weighed her 3 times because she couldn't believe it either...
  18. I make mine with cheese-filled sausages, but I haven't yet found a way to convert them for DD. I'd be very interested in hearing if there is a dough that works as many signs are pointing to the rest of going gluten free very soon!
  19. I had just posted this question on a Disney board I belong to as we are planning a spring trip! Someone also said that there is a bakery on Main Street, USA that sells gluten free cookies & brownies! It sounds like they are very knowledgeable about it and willing to work with you.
  20. We noticed significant results with my DD within a few days. After a month or so it sort of hit a plateau. That was when I started reading about breastfeeding and celiac. I went gluten free and she started improving again right away! Now we seem to have hit another wall so I am being more strict about crumbs. In fact, I've given my family until the end...
  21. I think if you simply say something like, "I know everyone thinks I'm obsessive about this, but your daughter truly shows a lot of the same signs I did and I feel I would be selfish if I didn't share my knowledge." Point her to some literature, reputable websites (like this one) or articles about the disease and hopefully she will see for herself. If she...
  22. He is learning right along with us. I'm just glad he was informed enough to make the celiac connection. She didn't have many symptoms at first, but he was right on top of her growth downturn. It's probably a moot point in our case anyway as I know she'll be violently ill by the end of the first week.
  23. My doctor said 6-8 weeks. DD doesn't have an "official" diagnosis because her blood test was negative and we opted to do a gluten free trial instead of the biopsy. Her doc wants us to do a gluten challenge when she is 4 so she doesn't have to stay gluten free at school if it turns out to be unnecessary. I was told she would have to eat gluten regularly...
  24. It sounds a lot like my little one. She was tiny, but didn't look malnurished as she was also proportional and had chubby cheeks. We went wheat free as the blood results were processing. She gained 5 ounces in the 1st 5 days. She has gained 4 pounds in the last 3 months so it is definitely the way to go for her! If he has one positive marker, chances...
  25. Good to know! I have seen them, but DD can't handle meat yet so it isn't worth it. If she ever gets to the point of eating beef these will be great to keep on hand for emergency dinners-just like hamburger helper, I suppose.
