But it is possible to be misdiagnosed and later find out you never had celiac which is what his last post stated.
-
I see the point and it really depends on the audience. There are some people who, if you make that comparison, will dismiss everything you say because you've lost credibility. Even accepting the higher percentages of people who have some intolerance to gluten, is a very rare person that will die from a single ingestion of gluten. Many on this board will...

ARCHIVED Military And Celiac Diagnosis
Tim-n-VA replied to desmarj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A doctor in the military or the VA system has had the same training and is subject to the same medical certifications as any other doctor. All doctors are human. Any generalization about groups is probably wrong. I've encountered good and bad doctors in the military (I'm a 20-year not medical retiree). I'm sure people have had misdiagnosis with military... -
Butter doesn't contain gluten but some restaurants use a seasoned-butter blend.

ARCHIVED Military And Celiac Diagnosis
Tim-n-VA replied to desmarj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think 4F is a draft term and not relevent if someone is already in the military. These policies are always subject to revision and to local commander's interpretation. In general, the military has medical standards for entering the service and medical standards for staying in the service. You need to be aware that a diagosis could mean not only... -
ARCHIVED I Think I'm Going To Eat Gluten On Purpose!
Tim-n-VA replied to LoriG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been debating a similar test - a one time intentional consumption of gluten to clearly identify reaction. I would suggest that if this is what you are doing that you try to eliminate as many variables as possible. That means for a period of a few hours before and after try to have nothing else that could cause a reaction (either thru intolerance or... -
ARCHIVED Fathers Gi - Is He An Idiot?
Tim-n-VA replied to Ken70's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't know anything else so I'll with hold judgement. As a parallel, if a doctor told a patient not to quit smoking most would also call him an idiot. I had a friend who was working at a facility that was closing and his wife was divorcing him. His doctor told him that he needed to quit smoking eventually but that he needed to resolve the other stresses... -
ARCHIVED Problem With Pamela's Wheat Free
Tim-n-VA posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I make this with a stand mixer versus bread machine. I've made it in the past without problems but had been using Gluten-free pantry for a while. I recent decided to go back to the Pamela's and all of the loaves settle. The last one I baked for 10 minutes longer than recommended on the package and it still settled but not as much. I'm using a loaf pan... -
ARCHIVED Xanthan Gum
Tim-n-VA replied to Carol the Dabbler's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
When you post on a message board for gluten-free that you don't eat something on principle it is very relevent to be clear that the principle is not a gluten related one. -
Open Original Shared Link If that link doesn't work, you can probably find it in the restaurants section - look at dec 2006 timeframe. One warning since food intolerances run in clusters in some people. The ones around northern VA have a basket of peanuts and shells tend to scatter so avoid this place if you have a peanut allergy also.

ARCHIVED Why Endoscopy If Blood Tests Show Celiacs?
Tim-n-VA replied to gfny's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There is no doubt that any medical test can yield false results and/or miss the problem. My issue was with you taking non-quantified phrases like "sometimes" and "usually not great" and throwing out numbers of inches to present a distorted view. Of course a bioposy isn't proof that a patient wil have no reaction to gluten because it only tests for one... -
ARCHIVED Why Endoscopy If Blood Tests Show Celiacs?
Tim-n-VA replied to gfny's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This is just not a realistic picture of what happens. The endoscopy is done by looking with a small camera at the small intestines and taking a biopsy on sites that appears to be damaged. This greatly increases the odds of finding damage if it exists versus the random sample alluded to in the quoted portion. -
ARCHIVED Clueless Doctors
Tim-n-VA replied to Joe Hoffman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
A half-hearted defense of the doctor. It isn't clear what the situation is but why would anyone solicite medical advice from a person trying to watch a football game? -
ARCHIVED Looking For A Tnt Fudge Recipe
Tim-n-VA replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Her recipe just has sweetened condensed milk and chocolate chips. Optionally she mixes in other things like peanuts, etc. Double check your brands but all of that should be gluten free. -
For those lazy like me, you can now buy crock pot liners (made of material similar to the bags to cook turkey in) to make clean up much easier.

ARCHIVED Brand Of Stand Mixer Yielding Successful gluten-free Reults
Tim-n-VA replied to ackdavis's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've used Pamela's mix and the gluten-free pantry mix. I've made both with and without the dough hook. I can't tell a difference in the outcome but witht he hooks you don't have the climbing problem. I think the issue is that you don't need dough hooks because you don't knead the dough, not that you shouldn't use them. -
ARCHIVED Brand Of Stand Mixer Yielding Successful gluten-free Reults
Tim-n-VA replied to ackdavis's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If your Sunbeam has dough hooks you could try that. The other technique I've used is to hold a spatula against the top of the beaters to prevent the climbing dough. -
ARCHIVED Thanks But No Thanks
Tim-n-VA replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For me it would be situational. Close friends I'd point out the gluten issue. More casual acquaintances I'll just say thank you. Trying to educate the whole world seems to me to be the path to a frustrating life. -
ARCHIVED Wegmans Recalled Seafood Sauce
Tim-n-VA replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As a side note, has anyone had a similar experience to this one: I have the Wegman's club card (can't remember what they call it). A month or so ago there was a recall on ground beef. I received a call from Wegman's that I had purchased ground beef in the time frame and that I should check it. I had never encounted that level of proactiveness in a... -
ARCHIVED Why Endoscopy If Blood Tests Show Celiacs?
Tim-n-VA replied to gfny's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have read on another Celiac oriented website that other auto-immune diseases can cause a false positive. The endoscopy is s check against that. I can't provide any information as to how common/likely that is. -
ARCHIVED Celiacs By Elimination
Tim-n-VA replied to MrMark's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The general situation is that being off gluten makes you more sensitive to it when you have it. Exactly why I haven't seen a great explanation for. My theory is that the human body tries to adjust to anything you give it. For example in the movie "Supersize Me", the guy's last set of medical tests actually showed slight improvement. His body was trying... -
ARCHIVED Diet And Diagnosis
Tim-n-VA replied to An-Onion's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
For feeling better, you have all you need. The one benefit to a formal diagnosis is to differentiate between celiac, gluten allergy or some other digestive based intolerance. In all of those cases the treatment will be the same - avoid gluten. However, many diseases tend to occur in clusters. If you have celiac you are more likely to have other auto... -
ARCHIVED Good gluten-free Bread
Tim-n-VA replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Some of the Great Harvest bakeries make a gluten-free bread. The local one for me (northern VA) has the disclaimer that they are a wheat bakery that takes cc precautions. They bake the gluten free bread in single use foil pans. I've not reacted to their bread. It is a sizable, heavy bread that might be worth the try. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Wheat-allergy, Gluten-intollerance, Etc
Tim-n-VA replied to Blondie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Open Original Shared Link That site has an explanation of the differences. I can't vouch for how widely accepted their definitions are. Edit: I changed the link to the main page, click on "celiac disease" -
Of course that would lead to questions about every other item that someone might be sensitive to. A good start would be a mandatory/standardized grid that lists the 8 major allergens. I sometimes feel as if I need a magnifying glass to go grocery shopping. My general concern is that if the theat of legal action becomes too great, it will become most...
