  1. Much of the buckwheat tea I saw has barley in it so I've not had it in years. Miss it on a hot summer day in Japan. I usually use buckwheat and quinona flour mix for gyoza. Usually make vegan ones with figs, feta and spinach. Sometimes with whole buckwheat or brown rice filling. I did buy and tree Bobs gluten Free steel cut oats last week so...
  2. Open Original Shared Link is another story on the hookworms
  3. Thanks a million, this looks really good. I'm not a baker but use the flours for noodles, ravioli, and gyoza type pot sticker things. Generally use a lot of buckwheat powder I bring back from Japan as I dont have much faith in the purity of the local stuff found here in Hawaii. That with Tef and mochiko is pretty interesting. My wife usually does the...
  4. Thanks for info Evie4, If you feel like posting some recipes, that would be great. I have some green Hawaiian bananas drying now. You guys got me inspired to make some flour!
  5. I read the sake part and thought Sa ke not sake - thinking at least when I go to these places I can still drink sake! ()
  6. In the early 1900s banana flour was on of the largest exports from Hawaii, almost equal to sugar and pineapple. It just stopped about 1910 and now we cant find the flour at all. WOuld love to try some of this stuff!

  8. Its pretty sad but without communications about the only thing you can have safely is the rice. The soy, teriyaki, ponzu and other sauces are usually made with soy sauce base that is laden with wheat. You should/could bring your own wheat free soy sauce. They would have to cook your meat by itself and make sure the grill and utensils have not touched the...
  9. Does anyone know about chef Brooke? Open Original Shared Link
  10. I work with a lot of different curry powders and never had trouble with McCormick or any others. Ken
  11. Maybe you should print out a number of posts from the forum to show him. Cross contamination is a big big issue. Baking cookies with wheat just cant happen with most celiacs in a house. --maybe you can make some cookies with gluten-free flours that will make people happy. Lots of recipes around here! good luck
  12. Never would have asked my wife to go gluten-free but I have had to ask for limits. No flour in the house for example. She can have bread/cake in a separate area but has to be very careful of crumbs. If she bakes something for her class and gets a mix she does it outside. I found early on that I get very sick and bad DH if there is flour or some cake mix...
  13. Gonna be easy with a full kitchen. The island naturals store as well as the other healthfood store near walmart of safeway ( cant remember which since I wont shop at either) should keep you in gluten-free items. Just make sure you come to the farmers market. Daniel Theibault's across the street from Merrimans will also do gluten-free meals -- Waimea...
  14. Hi, I'm still here in Kona! Personal I dont trust the Thai places -- what I asked them to make sure there was no flour in what I ordered they took the flower off the table. --- really. I also think they use a lot of soy mixed with the fish sauce here. On the bright side -- just call where you want to go and set it up ahead of time. More expensive...
  15. What the doctor told me was that with celic you can loose testosterone other hormones as well as nutrients. The injection and patch made a big difference 5 years ago. It can't hurt to have levels checked. Guess this just shows how celiac affects us all differently.
  16. What happens, at least it did to me 5 years ago, is that celiac destroys the testosterone and other hormones in the body. If you get a testosterone injection or 2 followed by transdermal patches for a few weeks, it usually brings the level up to where it should be. It seems but I've not found documentation that this happens every 2 to 3 years even on the...
  17. Its too bad - used to love the VEGGie dip mix --
  18. Thanks much I find that after a bad accidental glutening from breathing in flour that it takes 3 days before I can eat and often months before some of the swelling goes down. I could finally have a few eggs this morning which was really good!
  19. Thanks all. A littel better now but I'll doubt I'll be eating anything. Wel I keep telling myself I did want to get on a real diet -- just not this way! Got some bottled water since what comes out of the tap even in this resort just tastes off to me. Take care and enjoy your holidaze!
  20. So far i've yet to find any gluten free offerings in restaurants here in Palm Desert. Family reunion with 40 poeple and my mothers 80th is hard enough to deal with but i'll get to stay in the hotel now. Everyone went to a place called Souplantation last night. I walked in and straight into a cloud of flour from their open bread making area. Turned around...
  21. I was hoping you would show up here ()
  22. Sounds a lot like what I went through. Althougfh celiac for about 5 years I was diagnosed with diabetes in May and have ben wathcing things closely since them. I did get a lot of help here from Missys Mom and other diabetic celiacs. My sugar seldom goes over 100 now unless I eat too much fruit. I take glipizide but no insulin yet although they keep telling...

  25. Was I surprised to get this newspaper stuck under my door at a Ramada south of LA today with a whole magazine insert on celiac disease. It's packed up right now and I dont know if its just in LA or they did it for the whole US but you might want to check your local newspapers. Lots of ads for gluten-free foods and restaurants. ken
