  2. This thread is very old. Some messages from January 2009. As a specialist who travels the world working with fruit. I can tell you nothing as changed. Fresh fruit or juice made from it is healthy. Network marketed juices with 90% sugar and some vitamin c is just hat 90% sugar and garbage. Buy fresh fruit or frozen fruit or come visit Hawaii...
  3. it takes time to adjust and heal no matter where you are- I was only diagnosed 9 years ago but have been in and out of japan since 82 or so. Have seen plenty of changes. I'm also Vegan for the past 5 years so being vegan and celiac does limit the options until you start to think about all the fresh veggies there are. almost every izakaya ive been in...

  8. so easy to make your own using chick pea flour ( my favorite) or any other gluten-free flour and oil of choice
  9. HI, I feel for you, I threw up every morning for 6 months and then it stopped -- they never figured out why but only that at a certain stage the stomach could not handle anything. Still even when i didnt eat it would happen. Sure hope you can figure it out. good luck
  10. just wondered how people react to this type of cartoon. Sure its funny but with the increase of the fad, does it do us any good or cause more problems when these things appear?
  11. maybe we can meet after teh 20th when i get there form india. Not sure of my schedule yet though. If you can find the place behind sogo that would be good but actually you can get juwari soba in the local groceries. Is there a LIfe supermarket near you? the key is to find some bases to use, for example yuzu kosho and ume paste have never had problems...
  12. sorry not chiba -- shiba daimon is matoi
  13. HI Takeshi Steve Imai <hba02515@nifty.com> is the doc in yokohama who knows about celiac. just ell him we talked. I have a friend in Mitaka who has a fancy kaiseki ryori place, Suijenin, Gene Watanabe <gene4219@wacky-1.com> or his brother butch. Matoi sushi you should be able to find in Chiba Daimon is very small but Honpo san is very aware...
  14. I take it your not in Tokyo now, They have got pretty savey in a lot of places. There are a few doc who specialize in diagnosing celiac now too (Yokohama). After 30 years with my office there, 10 as celiac, i have a much worse time finding things in HAwaii.
  15. I never had problems with Meiji dark bars but Lindt in Hawaii usually has wheat listed. Never saw ko-mugi on all except 1 of the meiji products
  16. If your in Japan you must be eating a lot of junk food from family mart where even the rice has wheat added to it. Cheese too. YOu have to learn the kanji for wheat - Komugi or sometimes merikenko (american powder). I'm not sure how prolific you are nihongo but there are some tricks- find a juwari soba place -- not regular soba -- it has to...

  19. it depends what part of INdia the roti is from. IN the south its often made from millet. In the punjab from Wheat and some places in TN and Kerala from Rice. chana besan mix. IN good restaurants and hotels in India you can request ragi roti which is all millet. Ponmt being you always have to ask first and to make sure its 100% wheat free.
  20. me too, I leave for bangalore on the 27th and will spend some time in a kitchen at a 5 star hotel there for the second time in 5 years. Amazing to watch and learn. Good point about the okra - bhindi masala -- most places have plain pre-cut okra that they put in the deep fryer -- ask them to use a fry pan instead and you should have no trouble with...
  21. most of the indian foods are fine, dal makani, aloo gobi -- the briyani rice dishes. saag and palak panner is ok too although some restaurants put a lot of cream in it. stay away from naan, kulcha and breads cooked in the tandoor oven. tandori chicken can sometimes be cross contaminated with wheat breads. 90% of the time dosa, roti, pappadams...
  22. Even after 10 years I messed up last week and ate something that glutened me. Still not sure what it was. It takes time and like Scott mentioned it can take a few days to get over it. It gets easier as time goes on and you'll find meals and places to go where you feel good and dont worry as much. Its not so much the weight gain and it will pass but bloating...
  23. with me its been pretty fast -- sometimes befoer I leave hte restaurant -- not a pretty site. lasts about 3 days -- i hope you dont have to go through that but afriad every celiac does at some point. good luck
  24. I only hope you can turn this around quickly, I was glutened by accident this week for the first time in years. Had forgot how miserable it is. Good luck
