ARCHIVED Exciting Halloween Suggestion For Trick Or Treat
crittermom replied to johalex's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We do the traditional trade a piece of G candy for gluten-free candy. They can have a few pieces on Halloween night. Then that night I take out a handful of candy and hide it. The next day they can have a couple of pieces, then I take out a couple of handfuls that night and hide it. I do this until there are only a few pieces left. I am not sure if this... -
ARCHIVED Being "glutened"
crittermom replied to Emma's Mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
my dd has a reaction within about 1-2 hours of being glutened. She gets a tummy ache, has to go potty and passes large white stools. For the next 24-48 hours she is a nightmare, cranky, irritable, defiant, clingy, just all around out of sorts. She also gets very pale and develops large purple circles under her eyes. -
ARCHIVED Blood In Stool
crittermom replied to Virgie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Virgie, Blood in the stool is actually how we found Katharine's celiacs. The nurse practitioner kept telling me it was a fissure but the suppositories didn't work. When I got into her doctor and told her there was still a large amount of blood in very large white stools she suggested the celiac test. Now if Katharine gets glutened the stool first... -
Hi all, Just wanted to let people know about a great gluten free flour I have been using. It is called Tom Sawyer All Purpose Gluten Free Baking Flour. It is wonderful. You substitute this flour one for one in any regular recipe. If you use one cup gold medal flour, use one cup tom sawyer flour. No more mixing flours and gums trying to the right mix...

Hi all, I made halloween cookies with my little ones today. I found a great recipe for butter cookies that worked out great. There are only a few ingredients and the dough turns out really nice. I was debating on whether to post this here or the recipe section however I thought coming up on Halloween, someone may see it here and be able to use it with...

ARCHIVED A Poo Question
crittermom replied to mcsteffi's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
my ds has the same thing (2.5 yo). Gross, acidic smelling, undigested, green poop! (hey I am jumping on the gross bandwagon! ) This comes and goes. I have been trying to watch if it comes when he has gluten. We have a GI appt Nov 16th. Long time to wait but maybe a rerun on blood tests will give us more answers! Good luck, I will be watching for answers... -
ARCHIVED Doctor Appointment Shocker
crittermom replied to Ridgewalker's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would only consider meds as a last resort--if you don't try dietary measures first, you'll never know what foods or additives might be involved, and the meds might be covering up symptoms but the root cause might still be there... -
ARCHIVED Making Sandwiches Work
crittermom replied to buffettbride's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We use the kinnikinnick (sp? I will never remember how to spell that, I should just give up now! ) white sandwich bread and make cream cheese sandwhiches. Same idea as grilled cheese, just lots o' cream cheese on both sides and smush em' together! Katharine usually ends up peeling it apart and eating the cream cheese first and then the bread, it's actually... -
ARCHIVED Traveling With Toddler
crittermom replied to mommy2twoboys's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
How is your two year old about eating? Ok, picky, kinda in between? I traveled across country with my daughter when she was 18 months. Now at the time celiacs was not an issue however she wouldn't eat anything in a restaurant! I packed a cooler with ice and packed it with cheese and yogurt and brought lots of fresh fruit in the car with us which she loves... -
ARCHIVED Endoscopy For 19 Month Old
crittermom replied to adamjames's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My dd had her scope when she was 3 yrs 1 month. We had the same experience, I stayed with her until she was asleep. Next thing she knew she was getting popsicles and a lot of TLC from mom and a special stuffed animal named Murphy who is a puppy in a purse with flowers on it. One year later she still loves to play with Murphy. She got 3 pages of blues... -
ARCHIVED Son Having Symptons Again
crittermom replied to cs789's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I want the doctor to do additional blood work to make sure he is absorbing all his vitamins, does he have low iron, do we need to do endocrinology blood work. I only want him to have to be stuck with the needle once. It is so traumatic. What if the TTG blood work comes back fine? Then where do I go?? THANKS -
ARCHIVED Halloween Candy List
crittermom replied to Dandelion's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I spent 15 minutes on the the phone in Target today with a wonderful woman who searched their ENTIRE gluten free list for the candy corns... Target brand candy corn, indian corn, autumn mix, and candy pumpkins are all gluten free made in a separate factory with no chance of CC. Hooray! I told my daughter to close her eyes and open her hand after... -
ARCHIVED Wow News To Me!
crittermom replied to crittermom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks for the replies. We are covered through my dh's work so that's probably why I never noticed. -
ARCHIVED Sand-like Or Grainy Stools
crittermom replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
my ds has those grainy sand bms too. Someone else coined it exactly, you can't get the bits and pieces off with a wipe, you actually have to pick them off. I am so glad someone brought this up. His bm's are anywhere to incredibly soft to pebble like all in one day, oh and they are usually green. We are waiting for the GI call with the appt for us. ... -
ARCHIVED Frustration
crittermom replied to crittermom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Paula, Sorry the ped's office said since is was under 20 it is considered a negative. Although I am not sure what it was last year this time when he was tested. If it was in the single digits it may be on the rise and maybe that's why they want to see him? Thanks for the reply! -
ARCHIVED Halloween Candy List
crittermom replied to Dandelion's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
never mind on the candy corn, just read target brand is safe here on an old post, I will have to check that out. I promised dd that we would find one tomorrow at all costs! If I couldn't find one... well then I guess I would have to learn how to make it! -
ARCHIVED Halloween Candy List
crittermom replied to Dandelion's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Where can I find the ROCK halloween candy list, that would be amazing. I guess this post also answered my other question. My daughter is absolutely PINING for candy corn. I love it too, but I won't get it if she can't have it. Farley's is gluten free? -
ARCHIVED Frustration
crittermom replied to crittermom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
First of all thanks for the responses. Nikki's Mom, I don't think it is the zyrtec only because this was happening before we started that med. But interesting you said that because a close friends son and my nephew both got totally whacked out on it as well. BTW don't feel bad about the meds, I was glutening my dd for almost a year and didn't pick up on... -
I can't believe what I have just been reading...does insurance REALLY cost more for diagnosed celiac? Why? I agree with the last post I read, doesn't it make more sense and cost less money to be diagnosed and take care of it then keep just treating symptoms and testing everything else to find out what's wrong? CRAZY! I am just blown away right now, I have...

ARCHIVED Ugh The School Just Ticked Me Off!
crittermom replied to Nikki'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
How about a box of glutino cereal bars in the classroom? They have long shelf lifes and I believe are pretty filling. Maybe that with some applesauce containers? I know that alot of the chip brands are making those sealed snack size containers now as previously suggested. These might get her by in an emergency? Good Luck! -
Lil Critters Gummy Bear Vitamins are gluten free, says on the bottle. But I am not sure if they are CF. I called the company today actually because it also says they are processed in facility with wheat however I spoke with three people including quality control department head and they can all assure me that there is no CC and they are infact gluten free...

ARCHIVED Frustration
crittermom replied to crittermom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Sarah, Thanks for such a quick reply. I can usually get into her the same day I call or the next. I also just remembered that dd has weight check on Tuesday, she lost a pound at her last visit, so I can bug them then if they don't call on Monday. I am not sure what to think of the enterolabs. I did some reading on them and they seem valid enough... -
ARCHIVED Another Interesting Day At The Doctor's Office
crittermom replied to Ridgewalker's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wow Sarah! That's a tough beginning to the school year. I certainly hope things get better. I think a medical bracelet is a great idea. With severe reactions to drugs like that it would be a great safety net. You can get them in fun designs on the internet, Katharine loves to where hers. She has a glass bead one that the beads are all different colors... -
Hi everyone, I usually write about my dd but we have gotten things pretty well under control. (Although she got glutened at school ) Anyway tonight I need some advice on my son. When Katharine was diagnosed positive with blood test and biopsy I had Michael tested. His celiac tests came back negative which is not surprising as he had no symptoms at...
