  1. I do not correct people, basically most people do not really care what you are eating, including your family. As long as they can continue to eat what they want & remain ignorant, it seems to keep them happy. Of course I have had a life long battle with "food Allergies" so I would take my own food long before I knew anything about gluten...
  2. I think the letter is a good idea - it might work depending on the temperment of your mil. wow, keep us posted I am interested in the outcome.!!!! that one little piece of info about the rest of the family not standing up to her, seems ominous though....
  3. I see no kind way out of this - or she will run over you like a steam roller. I would put her up in a hotel or tell her that she cannot visit - maybe next year. I would not let her touch a thing in my kitchen. & really no need to care what she thinks, just tell her you do not want to hear it. If you do not take a very strong stance with her to start...
  4. Ali, some of us veterans are not much help because like me they have moved on from salad dressing. I never buy it anymore. I use olive oil, heinz apple cider vinegar, honey & then add in a seasoning any of the following: minced garlic, minced ginger, fresh herbs, dried herbs, mustard, salsa, basil pesto (which I make from my plants & freeze) or...
  5. You can test thru Enterolab.com & it will not be on yuor insurance records, & despite what people post here some doctors do accept that as a diagnosis.
  6. yes, weight gain is very common, my whole family of DQ1 people have weight gain & constipation...
  7. If youreally need a diagnosis you could test at Enterolab.com Have you read any of the books on gluten intolerance/celiac ?? I cannot imagine anyone that has read all these books & has a celiac child that would be wanting to eat gluten...
  8. I also recommend Enterolab.com because they also test for the gluten intolerant genes. I think in the coming years it is going to be important to know which one of those genes that you have... Other labs only test for DQ2 & DQ8 - a total shame...
  9. your children will definitely be healthier on the gluten-free diet, no need to feed them gluten until their villi flatten!!!!! Not a good idea. Not a good idea to cheat on dairy - especially when the villi are flattened, I am sure that you can find something else like almond milk or something... You will read in most of these books how bad dairy really...
  10. Baked sweet potatoes are good. I would be careful with trying to eat the gluten-free mixes, I am now having a problem with rice & I never could eat those mixes... An apple sliced in a baking dish & sprinkled with 100% maple syrup & maybe a little honey & some raisins, & a handful of chopped walnuts, bake or cook in microwave - makes...
  11. Dear Walter, yes, take a sublingual B12, & make sure all your meds are gluten-free This is what I am doing at the moment, I am eating more Paleo, that is no grains, no dairy, no beans, no white potaotes. Supposed to be no sweet potatoes, but I am keeping those. BUT, on the diet you can have a meal here & there where you can have some rice or a...
  12. Motherload, Maybe you could read the Paleo Diet Book, & go back to eating whole foods with no rice or corn & no replacement grain goodies. - no potaotes, no beans, no corn syrup, no diet sodas (geez those sodas alone will kill a person), heck no sodas at all, drink water...
  13. Just finished reading the paleo Diet. I have been gluten-free for 3 1/2 years & DF off & on, now 6 months dairy free. Gave up corn syrup last year. Cannot eat any of the replacement gluten-free things, makes me sick as can be... I was eating rice, corn tortillas, fritos, peanut butter which I gave up about 4 days ago to go more Paleo. I am...
  14. I would pursue other testing but I would also go back to enterolab & get the gene test. Also, you can just do a dietary trial & see if you get better, if you do then there is your answer...
  15. Hi, Welcome newbie officially diagnosed person So glad your arthritis is better. I am helping a friend go gluten-free that has bad arthritis in her knees, she is also overweight, but I think that she will lose the weight gluten-free because she once lost it all on Atkins, but then gained it back...
  16. I think that you are making a wise decision. It does not matter if you have an allergy, celiac, gluten ataxia or gluten intolerance, the treatment is the same - do not eat gluten. Also, it does not matter which it is for the future kids, the up side is that if you feed them gluten-free they will eat a healthier diet. & it is a plus not having that...
  17. you might not have gotten an answer because some people do not believe that a gluten challenge is a good idea. It is really your choice. But, during a gluten challenge you run the risk of picking up some damage or another auto immune illness that might not go away as easily when you just stop eating gluten. Also, you could eat gluten for 3 months &...
  18. definitely test thru Enterolab.com. They can detect a gluten problem up to a year on the gluten free diet. Celiac is just the advanced stages of gluten intolerance. Read the book "Dangerous Grains". Enterolab does not profess to diagnose celiac because the medical community has a very narrow definition of celiac as only being diagnosed by biobsy re...
  19. with a family history & symptoms there is no way that you do not have celiac, in my opinion... Dietary trial is the ultimate answer. If you eat gluten free & you feel better, then that is all the diagnosis that you really need.
  20. Just wanted to say that yes, your Mother & Grandmother's crohns disease is probably just untreated celiac. I have posted about a lady that is now in our group that thought she had crohns & then I convinced her to get the test at Enterolab.com & she had a DQ2 & a DQ8 & was positive for gluten & dairy. She went gluten free & she...
  21. Pheline, how long have you been gluten-free? Are you also dairy free? Are you eating that replacement bread & pasta stuff? it is not good for you, especailly at the beginning.
  22. If you want to lose weight while gluten free read the book "The Paleo Diet" It is a very healthful way of eating.
  23. Dietary trial is the true diagnosis of gluten intolerance. You might contact a support group in your area. Always good to find out about local restaurants & shopping places... not counting the understanding people you will meet there. If you want to save up your money for testing you can check out Enterolab.com I think they can detect a gluten...
  24. your daughter has celiac via positive blood test, end of story she will require a gluten free diet for life. they are doing a biopsy to find out how damaged her villi are. They are also doing it because that is the norm in the medical field & they can get the money for the tests, & you are letting them do the test. they did tell you that you have...
  25. cross contamination in gluten free grains is a possibility. Are you eating any processed crackers or any of the gluten free grains for baking?
