  1. Spandex causes my skin to feel like a burn. It comes and goes. Not always with every contact and with contact it doesn't usually last long. If I change my jeans etc. it goes away. Sometimes there is a mild redness but not always. I am latex allergic and spandex can contain latex. Even if it's not latex that is bothing me, other chemicals/substances related...
  2. I think it's important to have an all gluten-free Thanksgiving and that she be able to eat everything on the table, that she wants. There is a time and a place for learning to accept that we cannot have what others are having but there is also a time to have a safe zone and holidays are it IMHO. Even for me as an adult, this year, I need that. We were invited...
  3. I have both. Adult onset T1 for me. I am also a mom of a food allergic kid(13). Maybe you could give examples of situations if you are comfortable. I think it is important to empower kids to speak up for themselves and teach them to manage their health issues and educate them but I think it is a process of many years and have to consider what is age...
  4. My list of no-no's would take up too much space ;)I can tolerate an egg in baked good or some mayo and I have chickpeas on a 4 day rotation. Today: B-cornbread-no flours, just cornmeal, egg , ricemilk etc. and sausage patties Open Original Shared Link I use lean ground pork. L-brown rice pasta, "sauce" of olive oil-sautee onions 'till soft, add tuna...
  5. How are you managing the diabetes? with meds or insulin or both or dietary changes? Bottom line is that carbs raise blood sugar. Control the carbs and that is key to contolling blood sugar no matter what other measures are part of your management. Not all carbs are equal. Gluten-free or not, there are fast acting carbs and there are slow acting carbs...
  6. Riceguy, I don't have problems with the other things you mention, as far as I know and with which things of those that I consume but the ones I do are not all that often. I put the sunflower puzzle together after ditching 3 things that bothered me. They were ditched one at a time over a period of time, without knowing why, other than they bothered me....
  7. Marilyn, You ca use Earthbalance spread, soy-free version in the red tub ot Spectrum Organic Buttery Shortening. My local healthfood store didn't carry the spectrum but ordered it for me at no extra cost.
  8. I'll add the when I ditched sunflower recently I also ditched stevia(Truvia). It had been bothing me for while but I couldn't figure out why until I googled it and it is in the sunflower family. Mystery solved.
  9. Lots of good questions. The foods that I avoid are all based on allergy skin testing and elimination/challenge of the foods. I included my comments in bold in the quote of your post below.
  10. Yes, I agree. There is more to diabetes than just T1 and T2 and pos. or negative. There is more coming out these days about blood sugar regulation issues and there are spectrums for the various issues. It would be worthwhile for you to get some more data and do some more homework towards understanding what is up with you. Grain-free diets are very good for...
  11. I asked for and was tested for GAD. That's the one associated with LADA or T1.5 Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults. I think there are other antibodies for T1 as well and other tests that are often done. An endo will be the one to run those tests. I didn't get several tests that I've heard others get. My docs haven't been on top of things. I've had to ask...
  12. With your allergies plus many more, that's my dream. At one point I considered calling the local culinary arts school and asking about students. I figured if they provided the cooking skills, time and energy, I could teach them how the basics of my allergy/dietary needs and they would be more budget friendly. I thought about having someone help with/do a...
  13. What Peter said is true but also both often go undx a while. So, I would be hesitant to rule it out in family members unless they've had antibody tests for T1 diabetes or biopsies for celiac disease. I have slow progressing adult onset T1 and was probably undx for 10 years When I was finally dx, I was misdx a T2 but had bottom most level of pancreatic...
  14. You could make white grape juice versions for the kids in the Elmo cups.
  15. I found the skin testing to be very accurate and helpful and I was shocked at how wonderfully I felt after eliminating all 26 that I tested pos. to. I hope you get equally good benefit from this. For "butter" are you needing something to spread on bread? or to bake with? I am quite challenged with fat/oils these days and have a few more restrictions than...
  16. You can make vrious grown-up gelatins. Martha Stewatr has a bunch of recipes on her site. A sweeter wine or champagne, muscat, prosecco etc. make a gelatin out of it, add in berries pour it into those little plastic wine glasses from the $1 store and you've got an elegant fun dairy-free dessert.
  17. My son also had a neg. test but he had a frozen pizza one evening and suddenly vomited and got a tiny rash suddenly appear on his hand so I thought allergies so I bugged the doc for testing. Goodness knows those frozen pizzas contain most of the top allergens. Both blood and skin testing showed pos. for a wheat allergy and peanut. Later more thorough food...
  18. Today is gluten-free Rice Krispies and ham for B. Haven't decided what L will be-maybe brown rice pasta, tuna, mixed frozen veg. olive oil sauteed onion and pasley for the "sauce" Dinner will be leftver brown rice that's in the freezer, the remains of some breakfast sausage patties that I made this week and sauteed kale. Yesterday was those same sausage...
  19. I use Whole Foods 365 mayo. I also need mustard-free mayo and that's HARD to find but this one is free of soy and mustard.
  20. Take you pick but see someone. If they don't know, they'll be prompt to send you to the other. Generally I would think allergist first with swelling but that pain and overall symptomatology is a bit puzzling. Keep in mind that OTC allergy meds may not prevent all allergic reactions and may not supress all symptoms. I use some to take an edge off symptoms...
  21. Have you been screened for diabetes and thyroid disfunction?
  22. No one can say whether it is healthy for you or not, you know your body best and what is right for you. Sometimes, even if it is a healthy loss, it can be uncomfortable to find ourselves in a new skin. With diabetes in the family, if it is a concern for you, just go get tested/screened. It is not a bad idea from time to time. Can't hurt a bit and it may ease...
  23. I don't know what the right answer is but sounds like a plan to me. If you do react, you may consider waiting a bit longer than a week, but see how it goes. With any food, not just soy, it is possible to react to various forms/methods of preparation. For example cooked forms are generally tolerated better than raw but some people cannot have cooked either...
  24. Your c-peptide looks good. dare I put an exclamation point? Thank you for sharing. My c-peptide both times it was measured, fasting, after dx and after starting management was 0.8 on that same scale. I make enough of my own insulin to cover a LC meal but if I eat any starchy vegetables or fast acting carbs I need injected insulin. I don't need...
  25. It's interesting that your GAD is down. I didn't think about that being possible or re-testing. I'm afraid I won't be able to get mine re-tested. I fought HARD to get mine done in the first place. There was a blogger who went paleo and eliminated many top allergens. She was a young woman, T1 hadn't been dx too long and was able to get off insulin. Her...
