  1. I had IgG (delayed allergy) testing for multiple foods at 18 months gluten free and was shocked to come up allergic to rice. I now avoid products containing rice flour, rice syrup, all forms of rice as well as other foods to which I tested allergic and my gut health has improved dramtically. It IS possible to be allergic to rice. You could have him allergy...
  2. I did a consult with an herbalist in a local herb/wellness shop. Everything is customized for you. If you are near or in an urban area there may well be one near you.
  3. I had a bad time with tinctures. I was using a few different ones (not at the same time), and I believe that they contributed to my leaky gut. Grain alcohol and it's safety for those with Celiac is still a murky issue. I decided better safe than sorry. A good herbalist can make your tinctures without the alcohol.
  4. My hairdresser told me that hair will often fall out in larger than normal quantities for up to 12 weeks following a serious illness, shock, or surgery. My excessive hair loss stopped in about that timeframe after going gluten-free. It would make sense that once your gut starts to heal and absorb more nutrients, your hair would become more healthy as a result...
  5. It's nice to share the angst. It sure isn't easy eating so carefully, but I don't see that I have a choice. I never imagined that I would devote so much time, mental and physical energy (not to mention $) to managing my food and nutrition. Then again, I never knew how sick I could get from my food.
  6. It was my experience that you don't have to have an IV during childbirth if you don't request and/or need any drugs in case of an emergency.
  7. I've had two IV's for procedures/sugery in the last several months and have had major lymph node pain after each one. I'm not sure what was in the IV's, or if it was the anesthetic drugs but I can't think of any other reason why my lymph nodes went nuts. Corn? There's a possibility...
  8. I'm going through a very similar scenario, so I feel for you. Over a year gluten free then intols to corn, dairy, soy crop up. I had IgG testing for many foods and was found reactive to wheat, oats, casein, rice and yeast. My endoscopy showed minor damage - probably from casein. I've been free of all of these foods since 8/1/07, using probiotics and digestive...
  9. Never have cheated. I do not plan on ever consuming gluten voluntarily again. So not worth it.
  10. My primary doc tried to get me on anti-depressants for over a year before I self-diagnosed my gluten intolerance. I knew that wasn't what I needed. I ended up taking Xanax for anxiety attacks. I haven't had an anxiety attack since I quit eating gluten, thus, no more gluten. I have the full support of my friends and family for my dietary changes, though it...
  11. Your own toaster and cutting board are a good start. You must have your own colander. You should have your own pots, frying pan and cooking utensils if you are using non-stick pans and plastic utensils. Gluten is tenacious and hides in the small scratches in these items. In addition, it is desireable, if room allows, to have your own prep and storage areas...
  12. I ran across thigh wasting as a symptom in a search I did for something else - can't remember what it was related to, sorry. You should probably get it checked out by your doctor since you are feeling weakness.
  13. I'm 99% grain free and it's helping my gut to heal. I added in bromelein and papain, as well as probiotics to aid digestion and it seems to be working for me. It's hard to avoid rice and corn, but I feel so much better when I do.

    ARCHIVED Losing My Grip

Dr. Lewey does online consults. Check out his blog thefooddoc.com for a link. I've been a patient since Sept. 2007.
  15. I have had this my whole life, but it has all but disappeared since I went gluten-free. My son has it as well. He's going to be tested for celiac disease/GI next month.
  16. My MIL was diagnosed with this a year ago and went for the steroids right away, even though she really didn't want to go on them. When I mentioned that a gluten-free diet might help with the inflammatory aspect of the disease her eyes glazed over and she changed the subject.
  17. The only thing I can think of are the sugars - ingredients ending with -ol. They could be made from corn; do you have corn problems at all? I know some of my bad foods put me in a rage like that. The ingredients combined with the disclaimers look ok to me. Hmmm.....
  18. One word: Chebe.
  19. Sounds like a reaction to food products - not B12. Sublingual B12 makes me one happy camper! What are the ingredients?
  20. There are blood tests for casein, as well as the Enterolab stool test. I can't eat any of the substitute cheeses (which are pretty blechy anyway, IMO) due to soy intolerance, and tested IgG positive for rice and casein. You are better off avoiding dairy completely. After awhile you stop missing it so much, just like anything else. BTW - my acne cleared up...

    ARCHIVED Paleo Diet

I have also defaulted into a pretty much Paleo diet after cutting out all the foods that bother me, including dairy, all grains, rice, potatoes and most nightshades. I've lost about 15 lbs. in 5 months and have added in probiotics and enzymes to help digest all that protein and keep good gut flora. I don't follow a book or a specific diet - I just eat what...
  22. I had IgG (delayed reaction) blood testing for many foods and came back positive for casein - the protein in milk, wheat, oats and rice. There is a Celiac panel but you must make sure the doctor orders the complete panel. You can find that info many places - I don't have it handy right now. Enterolab (stool testing) is also available as per previous post...
  23. I can't handle any grain alcohol and get buzzed immediately off of one glass of wine. I used to be able to drink just about anyone under the table - no longer. I don't mind this development at all. As far as taking a month off from eating out, Jane, that is a terrific idea and it will be interesting to see how you feel a month from now.

    ARCHIVED Losing My Grip

BS, I am a patient of Dr. Lewey and finally went to him after realizing I had multiple food intols after over a year of living gluten-free. He is out on the edge of food intols (compared to most GI docs), he understands firsthand and believes in what we are going through. He has a great blog as well - Google thefooddoc. PM me if you would like more detail...
  25. I react to soy but can tolerate Blue Diamond Almond Milk in small quantities.
